We'd been desperate to get out of the…read morecity for a while, so we packed the car & our little rescue-mutt & headed away into the wilderness for our 18th anniversary. The Miner's Cabin offered a perfect, romantic, rustic retreat for us. You should think of your stay there as, "glamping". The cosy, one-room-loft-bedroom cabin is clean and basic, the structure itself, utterly charming. The bathroom is but a toilet, the entire room the shower cubicle & it's VERY clean, but most bathing happened in the river, shh, I'm not gonna lie. The cabin's heart is the pretty balcony that looks out over the crystal-clear river, where we spent a lot of our time relaxing and cooking. The kitchen is only a small bar fridge (though they do provide a large ice chest with ample space - just don't forget to buy ice), a sink, a microwave, toaster oven & an electric frying pan. Being outdoors folks though & a cook, we came prepared. I brought a portable gas burner which made the balcony a charming spot to fry up the beautiful, Steelhead Trout I was catching (FANTASTIC fishing). We ate meals out there too, to the majestic view of the river, the mountains & the pines, immediately before us. I also brought my cast iron dutch oven & used the wonderful, functional fire pit/ BBQ down on the river rock patio to roast vegetables in the fire. If you are wise about when to open and close windows at appropriate parts of the day, the Miner's Cabin stays wonderfully cool, even in the hottest of summer days as we experienced at around 103F. I think we used the swamp cooler once for an hour out of curiosity for what it may do. At night, the incredibly comfortable loft bed was heaven. We'd open up the pretty gable windows and enjoy the cool, evening breeze and sound of the lively river. The big house next door, also owned by Heidi, had a large family group staying there. We'd only see them sometimes when we'd use the driveway which is shared. Even with their nearby presence, the cabin felt very secluded. Occasionally folks would float by down the river and you'd share a wave or smile. You can hear the highway which is quite incongruous as you seem so far away from civilization. The river water is incredible. Our dog's coat and our hair and skin have never felt so good from lolling about in the water. Heidi has very detailed instructions and information available on the website and in the email package. Be sure to read them so you know exactly what you're in for and any additional costs like a dog fee etc. All the info you need is there. Heidi is very communicative. If you want the kind of no-frills, communing with nature experience we were after, this place is for YOU!

Janelle and Kendall start your day with a hearty breakfast that always includes a homemade wonder such as cinnamon scones. There is a lovely living room with comfy sofas so you never feel confined to your room and the backyard has areas where you can sit and relax and enjoy being outdoors. The ambience is terrific, but the truly priceless aspect of staying at Bridgehouse is the amazing couple who run it. My family stayed here during an extremely stressful time. My husband was visiting my son and had a stroke. He had been staying at Bridgehouse. My daughter and I stayed at Bridgehouse waiting for him to be cleared to travel back to our home in Chicago. Janelle and Kendall offered love and comfort and support to us. At a time when we were forced to grab hospital snacks during the day, the hearty breakfast and company of other visitors strengthened us for each challenging day. Their hugs and encouragement made us feel that we were not alone. Quite honestly, even if Redding is not your destination, I would encourage a stay at the Bridgehouse when you are in the area.

The bed was very comfortable and quiet location made for a very restful night. Breakfast was basic fare but ample and tasty. Great way to get us on the road. Coffee to go was greatly appreciated too. Both Connie and Rick were welcoming and helpful. We enjoyed our stay and certainly would stay here again whether we were traveling through or staying in the area for several days.

Staying at the Apples' Riverhouse when I (we) ended up in Redding for the weekend was very much…read morelike suddenly remembering that I have casual friends in Redding, calling them up, and having them invite me to use their place as my own for the weekend. My friends would say, "Sure, stay here when you're in town. Not a problem at all. We have a guest room, and a really nice backyard. Oh, you're bringing your bicycle(s) too? That's fine; we have a garage where you can keep them safe and dry." What would probably happen next is that we'd avail ourselves of all of this hospitality: my friends would cook us eggs for breakfast, give us glasses of wine in the evening, and let us go about our business in between the breakfast and the wine. And then, not ready to say goodbye to the weekend yet, we would probably go off on a long hike and not come back to collect our bicycles until nigh dark. When we finally made it back, my friends would be worried about us and would have already called around to try to find out whether we were okay. All in all, quite nice. It's good to have old friends in Redding.

My husband and I stayed there for one week and when the original room we booked was not big enough for us, Julie was most accommodating finding us another room that would suit our needs. The property is lovely and we were fortunate enough to experience a backyard concert by Hattie Craven on our last night there. It was a magical experience to sit outside with music in an enchanted forest as the setting. The owners, Julie & Dan were so helpful with any needs we had and so hospitable...felt like we stepped back in time when customer service really meant taking care of your customers every needs...we couldn't have asked for a more wonderful stay...and to top it off, it was my husband's birthday and when we got back from his birthday dinner, Julie had baked a homemade cake for us...how sweet is that! If we ever return, this is where we will stay. The personable service, friendliness of not only Julie & Dan, but any staff member was such a joy. The owners have always been very accommodating, friendly and are kind. It is a very rustic building with a lot of history behind it. This is a beautiful B&B and we love it and the ambiance here. The food that was prepared for us was outstanding and top notch. Desserts were superb and I am not a dessert person at all. The town of McCloud is also very quaint & rich in history. There is lots to do in the area such as McCloud falls (all three of them) and much more. My wife and I definitely recommend the McCloud River B&B. Go and enjoy as we have done now several times.

We found this a couple of hours before we left Lassen volcanic. We are so glad they had a couple of rooms available. This was awesome pit stop with clean rooms, great WiFi, lots of outdoor space , access to the creek and one of the best breakfast burritos you will ever have. The staff are very nice and friendly. We were greeted by our gracious host when we arrived and shown to our hole. We were absolutely stunned! The hole was gorgeously decorated, fully appointed with every amenity imaginable and cozy as can be! We quickly settled in and strolled around outdoors before the sun went down, the entire area is just phenomenal! We were the only guests there so it was divinely peaceful and felt like we truly were in a little hobbit village! In the morning we were served a delicious homemade second breakfast, expertly prepared and delivered to our door! It was a completely amazing stay, can't recommend enough and will definitely be back.

A Stunning Gem in Red Bluff, CA…read more Hummingbird House is a beautifully renovated Victorian house just off Main Street. The house is gorgeously decorated, each space carefully designed to be a combination of luxury and function. I was so happy to find that the kitchenette is fully equipped with silverware, plates and cups. There is a Keurig-type coffee maker, microwave and small fridge with a functional freezer (too often the little refrigerators in hotels don't have a freezer). Best of all, I was happy to find an electric water kettle. I'm a tea drinker, and using the hot water from coffee makers gives the tea an annoying coffee taste. I'll be staying for several weeks, so the washer and dryer is a great convenience at no additional cost. The hosts are so welcoming and kind, without being intrusive. And they are always responsive to texts or emails. I have stayed in small inns and B&Bs all over the world, and I have never been in a nicer place! The pastries and cookies that are in the parlor are brought every day from the bakery on Main Street. Each one has been outstanding. The bakers are trained in French patisserie and the quality is amazing. This is just a reflection of the caliber of everything at Hummingbird House!

They allow pets in certain rooms which is nice if you're traveling with dogs! I enjoyed how communicative the staff were. If you needed something, you can text a number and they were on it! They advertise that you may not have service here, but we had service and they also had wifi. They had great views outside on the deck. The grounds were nicely maintained. It was very easy to get here and right off highway 5. On the other hand, being a bed and breakfast I was expecting breakfast to be a bit better tasting. Breakfast is included in your stay. They provide fruit, yogurt, granola, juice, coffee, and toast. You get to also choose one main entree served with a side of potatoes. The main entree rotates so it's different daily. Overall breakfast could definitely be improved taste wise, but it's very convenient and nice of them to do this. Another downfall was the temperature in the main lobby/ dining area. They ran it hot in there and if you needed to get ice (they don't have ice machines, so they provide buckets of ice) it was all melted. This happened twice. Minor complaints!
