We adopted our cat, Ralph, in April 2022, and we're so grateful we did. The application and interview process was thorough and thoughtful, which I really appreciated--it was clear that Odd Cat prioritizes finding the right home for each animal, not just any home. When we spoke with Tara and the other volunteers, it was clear that they truly cared for Ralph and all the other animals. After we were approved, they provided us with a detailed transition plan to help Ralph settle in comfortably. They also gave us insights into what to expect both behaviorally and physically, which helped us distinguish between normal adjustments and signs that might require medical attention (which thankfully there were none!). Odd Cat is such a special place because, as the name suggests, they focus on saving cats that would normally not get a second chance. Some of the negative reviews I'm seeing here are really concerning--these animals have been through a lot and often need patience before they can fully adjust. Even the most "normal" cats need time to settle in, so seeing people give up after just 24-48 hours and blame the shelter is disheartening. My 89 year-old mother was heartbroken when her last cat died, and I can't tell you how grateful I was to find Tara and the Odd Cat Sanctuary. Tara made the process simple and stressless. She was supportive, informative and kind. The cat's foster parent, too, was very helpful. My mother's new adoptive cat, Hamilton, was initially a challenge due to the cat's circumstances prior to arrival at the OCS, but Tara remained committed to providing assistance when needed and has always been accessible. And now, my mother is devoted to Hamilton, and Hamilton won't leave her side. A word about Tara: As a vet tech in a vet hospital, she is a professional in her field, assisting with surgical procedures and the like full time to ease suffering and promote healthy animals. When not working, she is volunteering her time to the cats in her care, many of whom have been abused and neglected, or have medical issues. Avoid, avoid, avoid! TOCS experience: I went through the entire application & home visit experience and - after 6 weeks (!) - was approved for the cat I had applied for. In a very long text chat with 2 TOCS volunteers and myself we arranged to meet and then they ghosted me. I actually called Petsmart customer service and they had the store manager contact me. He said he wasn't surprised by their behavior. He reached out to them but then told me they said the cat was "no longer available". Note that they didn't say she had been adopted, just no longer available. Now 4 months later, this poor cat is STILL on their website but they changed her name. Not sure how dumb they think people are but they are using exactly the same photos as in her original post. Contrast this experience with Merrimack River Feline Rescue in Salisbury. Submitted my application online the Monday before Christmas. Got an email Tuesday (Christmas Eve) about the cat and telling me to come in Thursday to meet her if I'd like. Only had to wait because they weren't open Christmas Eve or Christmas day - understandable. Went in Thursday and adopted the cat. Please avoid this "sanctuary". They have no real interest in adopting out cats to good home and it's not the cats that are odd here. Seriously. read more

I have nothing good to say about this organization. My fiancé and I adopted a blind cat on the evening of February 12. By February 14, he was back with his foster. The cat appeared to be in good health at the foster home and we were told he had just been to a vet (the vet papers I received after adoption said he had last seen a vet over a month prior) and that he was litter box trained. Less than 48 hours in our apartment, the cat had diarrhea 5 times (none of it in the multiple litter boxes) and three carpets had to be thrown away. He caused over $100 worth of damage our my home. The cats eye sockets (he had no eyeballs but still had tear ducts) started discharging a thick, yellow goop that could be smelled from across the room. I contacted TOCS and they said it was "stress", but we have 4 other healthy cats and didn't want to take a chance of them getting ill. The foster asked us to meet him in a bar parking lot so he could pick the kitten up from us. We were told by him that the cat would be going to the vet the next day. When we adopted the cat, I was put into a group chat with the foster and five other nameless people from TOCS and told to keep all conversations about the cat in the chat so everyone could read everything. When the cat was still in our home, and I was expressing my concerns, everyone was so quick to reply. As soon as the cat was picked up, getting anyone in the group chat to reply was a hassle and they said the cat no longer needs to go to the vet. TOCS is refusing to give me my adoption fee back ($225) and refusing to respond to my multiple texts and emails. I understand that the adoption contract says they don't usually return adoption fees but it also says that they do every thing to ensure the cat is healthy upon adoption. We had the animal for less than 48 hours. Also, the foster home he came from was a small 2 bedroom apartment and there were 11 other cats living there. The Odd Cat is a scam, they are making multiple adoption fees off of the same cat and the fosters and shelter are hoarding cats. Unprofessional, and the worst shelter I have ever dealt with. I will be reporting The Odd Cat and spreading the word about them; I am affiliated with several catteries, cat registries and cat shows across the country. read more

I understood that I was working with an all volunteer organization, but I was still surprised by how responsive and helpful everyone was through the process. Go elsewhere. I painstakingly went through their "application process" which took forever as "they were understaffed". Eventually I was approved to adopt pending my home tour, which they never scheduled with me. After months of reaching out to them with no word back, I commented on their facebook post which said the cat I had expressed interest in adopting multiple times "wasn't getting any interest" and I said "hi i've been reaching out to you all and i've been approved by one of your coordinators to adopt, I would adopt her as soon as this week if you could work with me! has anyone else had success getting a response from them?" but instead of responding, they blocked me, which in my opinion says a whole lot. I feel like they post disabled cats in an attempt to crowdfund donations but then don't actually use that money towards adopting the cats out to good homes. Multiple other reviews say the same thing. I am a past vet tech/receptionist so I was extremely qualified to take care of this cats needs and was approved, so even if they were understaffed all I needed (per them) was someone to do a virtual home tour. Additionally, I had a friend look at their facebook page and they not only blocked me but also deleted mine and others comments saying they too weren't hearing back from them. Their behavior is extremely suspicious, especially blocking people for having valid concerns and just asking for a response while crowdfunding for so called "unadoptable cats" who in reality have a lot of inquiries. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!! I contacted the Odd Cat Sanctuary and was profoundly clear that I'm disabled and was seeking an approachable, low key cat who would be an emotional support animal and live in peace with my other cat. When I met the cat, he seemed standoffish, but I was assured that he was friendly. He did let me pet him. Right after I signed the adoption papers, they refused to give me the cat's medical records, but said that somebody else at the rescue had them and they'd be emailed the next day. I never got the records. I honestly think they doped the cat up for the meeting because several hours after getting home he began to attach his own tail and growl constantly. I called the rescue, and told them about the issue. They told me that I was now responsible for the cat, and I should take him to the vet ASAP. I responded that they had given me a clear bill of health, and I had been abundant about this cat was to be an emotional support animal. After two days, I called the Odd Cat Sanctuary and told them that I was going to bring the cat to the SPCA because this was NOT what I had signed up for. At this point, they began message bombing me, offering to take the cat to their vet. I expressed interest in going along to the vet to see if the issue could be resolved, and they refused to answer. I met them in the parking lot of a mall and they never responded to my messages after that. My cat was then listed as "no longer available." I cancelled my adoption check. I wonder if it's ethically justifiable to rescue an antisocial cat who may have a chronic pain disorder, and then to dump those animals on unsuspecting, well intentioned people. What's more important here, a very maladjusted cat's life, or the finances and well being of a disabled, low income adult with PTSD? Maybe there are some cats who should just be humanely euthanized. To some, every cat may be valuable. They should either shoulder the entire financial and time burden of the care of these animals, or they should be very up front with potential adopters about the hazards of their maladjusted veterinary money pits. I adopted a wonderful cat from Pat Broody Shelter in Lutenberg MA. I visited three times before finding the cat that would be the perfect match. My cat had kittens and it was clear that the entire family was happy, not stressed, and that the foster family really got to know their temperaments. Nobody pressured me or misrepresented the cat's condition. If the Odd Cat Rescue gives you the creeps, go somewhere else! After trying everything we could, we were in the unfortunate position of having to rehome our 2 senior kitties due to multiple behavioral issues including escalating unpredictable aggression towards our toddlers. Because they are seniors, the several shelters I called told me they would be euthanized. I also called several rescues who told me they would never be adopted because of their age and so they were not willing to take them on. Despite all the problems and stress involving the children, I love this cats and really wanted them to be given the chance they deserved in a quiet, peaceful home where they could live out their senior years. A friend of mine told me about The Odd Cat Sanctuary. I contacted Tara who was incredibly kind, understanding and nonjudgmental (unlike a few of the shelters I had called). She actually listened to why we needed to rehome and took the time to understand the home that would be best for our cats. She also understood how hard it was for us to give the cats up and gave us the time/ opportunity to be certain of the decision. The day I turned them over to their new foster mom was one of the worst days of my life. I cried the entire time. Both Tara as well as the new foster mom were incredible. They sent multiple updates and pics to assure me the cats were ok. The fact of the matter is that they were better than ok. The cats blossomed back to their old sweet selves in this quiet calm loving home. They became lap cats again and all their behavioral issues completely resolved. Most importantly, they were just recently adopted into their new forever home. Tara texted me pics on that day as well as from their new home which she very well didn't have to do. Knowing both Tara as well as the foster mom, I have peace of mind knowing that they were well matched and it is a loving home. I can personally attest that The Odd Cat Sanctuary is the real deal. They are angels. They truly care about the cats AND the people involved with the cats. They are matching for life and that takes time. As someone who had to give up 2 cats that I still love, this means the world to me as I know they are safe, happy and loved because Tara and TOCS took the time to be certain that was the case. I will forever be grateful to TOCS for giving my cats the second chance they deserve and our family peace of mind that, although difficult, we made the right decision. read more

I hate to leave this review but until Odd Cat thoroughly reads their applications, I cannot recommend this shelter. We submitted an application for a cat a few months ago. We answered each question honestly and thoroughly. I'm a dog trainer - I have raised many pets in my life and have worked professionally with animals for 15 years. Our application was rejected because there was "risk" that we might "take our cat outside." I don't know what they decided meant this, because we don't take our cats outside, never will, and we didn't indicate anywhere on our application that we'd ever do that. So, I tried to ask about it. "Maybe our application was mixed up with someone else's?" Every attempt to contact this shelter has been met with silence. The only phone number I could find to contact a real human there just rang, no way to leave a message. They never replied to my email or Facebook messages. They refuse to acknowledge any error on their part, or even communicate with me whatsoever. It's very frustrating to go through their lengthy application to be rejected for something that doesn't even apply to you. The kicker is that the particular cat we applied for was special needs, and required a quiet home with "no kids, few or no pets." At the time, we had 1 dog and 1 cat, no kids. I found the adoption photos posted on Odd Cat's Facebook of this cat in his new home - complete with 3 cats and 2 small children in the background of shots. "Quiet," indeed. We ended up finding a sweet cat elsewhere for our family from a shelter that actually read our application. :) read more

Yea...we're looking to adopt a cat, not a CHILD! Too bad; we are a probably the absolute ideal prospective adopters for a cat. It think their processes are bad; the first woman that called me was lovely but then the red flags came. I completed the application because I really loved two of the cats that were available and wanted to look into it further as a friend to my 3 year old cat that just lost her sister. I read they were good with other cats, so why not, right? I got a phone interview a few days later, but there were a lot of confusing remarks she made. The cats that were very clearly listed as good with other cats, according to her were "definitely only for adoption in houses that don't have any other cats, as they are only good alone." I was disappointed but said alright, please keep us in mind for other young cats that come up. She asked me tons of questions about my 110% indoor cat and how I got her and what the process was then and many other questions that don't really seem appropriate. I reluctantly told her and she grilled me about it even though it was through a very reputable non-profit cat rescue. She then grilled me about our cat that I mentioned passed away recently and asked why/how she died and wanted the contact information for the vets that she was at in addition to my cat's vet so they could call them as well. She said she'd call me back if she found another cat that fit my needs. That was at least a month ago... still nothing. I hung up and felt really weird, bad vibes with this place. Their process seemed incredibly long, and I understand that they want to have a good place for their kitties, but I treat every animal like a human angel child so they really missed out on a wonderful home. NEVER AGAIN! I adopted a cat from the Odd Cat Sanctuary and was completely bamboozled about the condition of the cat. They said he has Cerebellar hypoplasia but did not have a neurologist diagnosis. My trusted vet said he does not present like a CH cat and it can ONLY be diagnosed by a neurologist. The "medical history" they gave me for a 5 year old cat was for ONE vet visit for rabies vax. No bloodwork and nothing from the people who surrendered (abused) him. Also they tell the foster parent not to contact the adopter. I contacted the foster and learned why they didn't want us to talk. We knew the truth about the cat and the terrible, deceitful, incompetent agency he came from. I love the cat but I am disgusted with the agency and would NEVER go again and will continue to dissuade others from going there. read more

I sent an email saying I was interested in meeting 2 different cats, 1 of whom is 12 yrs old. They emailed me back promptly telling me to fill out the application. I did that a month ago. I'm a very experienced cat owner with stellar references (I even work as a petsitter!). However, I have not received any response, and 1 of the cats I was interested in was adopted. The 12 yr old cat is still there, and as older cats are generally tougher to adopt out, you'd think they would have responded! After a couple weeks I sent them a nice email to confirm they got the application and to ask for an update. So far, nothing! I know shelters are busy these days, but it's only professional and common courtesy to at least send a quick email. That cat could have had a wonderful home. I'm looking elsewhere now. read more

I should of learned from all these bad reviews not to proceed with this place. I got all the way to the going to meet the kittens I was interested part of the process. When Tara who is not even fostering these cats called me sounding nervous and flipping through random different excuses as to why I'm no longer eligible to adopt these cats. She also started to explain her personal attachment to the cats. This got me thinking back to how the 2nd volunteer that interviewed me told us she had 5 cats that she had fostered from TOCS and kept. This place really should just not be open to the public and just continue to have their foster parents keep all the cats. What is troubling is how they waste your time and blame you for not getting the cat when the truth is they just don't want to give the cat up. I met Tara at 12am midnight last night . my kitten was acting strange and I didnt have the money to take it to vet so Tara agreed to meet me and take kitten I was told by Tara that the cat seemed to have brain damage and wouldnt make it! This morning I text her and ask how he is doing ans she replies hes doing better so i ask her once hes strong and better could i adopt him back as she said in the beginning that she would get the kitten strong again and get him back on track and that she wouldn't keep the kitten that she would Foster it and then put it up for adoption so this morning I asked her well once he's strong and able to eat and all that could I pay you any amount of money I don't care how much you charge me to adopt him back and you know what her answer was no me and the kitten bonded last night and I plan on keeping him and then she goes on telling me I think we should cut contact with one another I flipped a lid what this lady did to me was cruel and wrong and I hope to God everyone stays away from this place please I've learned a well lesson out of this oh and then she goes on and says I will never help anyone again!!!! read more

This place is terrible. There are so many cats in their care and I wanted to adopt a pair of cats after recently purchasing and moving into a new home. They literally will not respond to my application. They post all day long on Instagram but won't answer inquiries. I applied, I emailed, I messaged them on IG, nothing. I have a hard time believing they care about these cats. I'm an experienced cat owner and I've had them all my life. I've never had an issue adopting cats in the past, and it's unfortunate that TOCS is unwilling to even review/respond to my application. I would've made a great home for two of their cats. They seem to have TONS of cats, and now I understand why. They just hoard them. Shame on this shelter for refusing these cats the life they deserve outside of shelter. read more

I've volunteered for odd cat for over three years and have fostered about 100 cats for them. Key word: volunteered. No one gets paid & we all work full time jobs sometimes 50 hour work weeks. The cats I've fostered range in all different types of special needs and circumstances. Some hit by cars, abused, left in trash cans etc. I chose to foster for odd cat because of the time they take to vet adopters and the care they take in finding cats I care about and love, forever homes. We are all human beings doing our best and we are not perfect. We've adopted out over two thousand cats; cats years later we still receive updates on but the only reviews here are negative ones, many where there is defiantly another side to that review not being communicated via yelp. Here are some tips: Do not attempt to adopt from our rescue if you are not patient and do not understand that we are all volunteers and a limited number of volunteers at that & that the process may take time. Do not attempt to adopt from our rescue if you are not okay with a sometimes neglected, abused, or special needs cat not being perfect in the beginning. Do not attempt to adopt from our rescue if you do not appreciate our right to specifically choose the best fits for our very limited number of cats; some of these cats coming from the worst situations. Do not attempt to adopt from our rescue if you are not okay with our vetting process; it is not a secret it is on our website, please do your due diligence. If you chose not to adopt from us that's okay! We are happy another cat found a home with you and got adopted. I really wish the individuals who experienced such a positive experience with us would want to spread the word through yelp but regardless we will continue saving cats, which at the end of the day has no positive acclamation other than seeing these cats in great homes. read more

I just went through the process of trying to adopt from here. First off, the entire process took almost a month to get to the final interview stage. I understand they want their pets going into great homes but over a month is ridiculous. So of course all the cats we originally wanted were gone. Next, we didn't even pass the finale stage- the home tour. Our current cat is a FULL indoor cat. For some reason they didn't believe that our cat was an indoor cat so they didn't move forward with us. I even asked at the end if I should address any concerns and they said "no, everything looks great." And 5 days later we get denied. We are a young couple in our late twenties and we live in a NICE place. So they most of judged us off our age or something but either way it is discrimination. I recommend if you want to adopt a cat, save yourself the time and hassle and go somewhere else to adopt. We adopted our first cat from a shelter and we will do the same for her future friend. read more

I agreed both in writing and verbally that I wouldn't bring the cat outside but I got an email pretty much telling me I'm a liar. The Odd Cat Sanctuary is an amazing organization. This group of dedicated volunteers takes in and cares for cats with no other options, literally taking them off the euthanasia lists. My TOCS adoption process took about 2 weeks from start to finish. This adoption group is the most thorough of all the local ones I've used over the past 15 years in the Massachusetts area. One other group did actually contact my vet as a reference, the others did not even do that. TOCS is - as evidenced by some of the other reviews here - almost overly-protective of their cats. However, they primarily host cats who have far more than the average health or temperament issues, making finding the proper home for each cat a much more specific and detail-oriented search than your average, healthy cat. I think their insistence on meeting all the humans in the house, doing a home inspection, and checking with the vet are all what should be being done by any reputable cat adoption agency - and I know from a friend who is a foster mother of dogs that all of those processes are standard in dog adoption. What it comes down to: all of these organizations have the responsibility to make what they deem the best decisions for the animals in their care. read more

I don't in any way want to minimize this contribution--it's what attracted me to them. They seem to shelter some truly wonderful cats, and I wish I'd had the chance to meet some of them. However, I was (with no meeting or even a conversation about the situation) rejected as a potential adopter. I responded graciously, but in truth this was simply a bad decision on their part. I am a very experienced cat companion who has nursed traumatized and withdrawn cats back to their own personal versions of emotional stability and happiness. My cats are full members of my household, respected and loved and accounted for in my will. I was rejected because during one catastrophically difficult period of my life I fell behind in vet appointments. Although rashly arrived at, OCS's decision was not without reason and I openly and honestly admitted the error and stated that it would never happen again (which it won't, as I am now recovered from the very serious problems that overwhelmed me). The bottom line is that OCS's refusal to even inquire about the circumstances was offensive and short-sighted. While I understand the concern and fully agree that regular medical care is essential, had this organization bothered to look more closely they would have found that they were cutting off their nose to spite their face. They missed out on one of the best caregivers they could possibly have found. Happily, several other shelters seeking help for particularly troubled cats have welcomed me, calling me "exactly the person we have been looking for." and I have found a wonderful "death row cat" who escaped murder at a kill shelter in NYC by one day. So all is well. OCS, get it together. It's great to be cautious, but you're crossing the line into suspicion and snap judgment. Consider extending the care and sensitivity that you offer the cats in your shelter to the humans who would love to give them happy homes. read more
