With great recommendations from friends, I had high hopes for The Oasis when I found myself in Sagauche looking for a bite to eat. The service was quick and friendly. The El Grande dinner was humongous and delicious. Best chili relleno I have had in the San Luis Valley (and I have had some great ones here)! I imagine the place might get hopping when busy, but on a laid back Monday afternoon it was just a casual lunch that felt like home. Definitely worth a visit. I will be back! read more

Called for take out. Have to travel from Villa Grove (20 minutes each way). Wanted the El Grande platter ($20++) in two take out boxes. Was told that could not be done. Had an order for the rest of the folks working up here worth over $120.00. Really? I'll gladly pay to have my food edible when I get home. Like me, you're probably wondering how The Oasis got its name. Like all oasis's. There's nothing else to find in 20 miles. Closes at 8, so better get to the Oasis early. You should also curb your enthusiasm. Exterior and interior does its best to lower expectations, but try to go lower. I asked about the beer selection and was given an expectation-lowering reply from the Raiders NFL clad waiter; "We have lots of beer." Colorado so couldn't go wrong with Coors. I was advised that "stacked enchiladas" were the nights "special" dish. I interpreted this as the "safest" dish. How could one go wrong placing 2 oz cheese between tortillas and smothering with red or greens chili? Surprisingly tasty. read more

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. It was the absolute worst so called Mexican food I have ever had in my life. The green pork in salsa had no green salsa and the pork tasted like it came from a can. The salsa had a hint of it like they ran out it and decided to make a corn starch flavorless gravy out of it. The red sauce with beef was barely passable because at least tasted like a canned version. The sopapilla was who knows what. The beans and rice were passable. I did ask the waitress ahead of ordering about the sauces/salsas and asked if they were canned and was told they were house made. They have no idea what Mexican food is or how to make it. I have never been so angry and insulted over how Mexican food is was being represented until now. What a a degradation of the food of my culture. Shoot Taco Bell does a better job and I hate their food and do not consider it Mexican food! My husband asked for a rice and beans burrito with potatoes. The waitress suggested the potato burrito off the menu. What a joke! He got a small flour tortilla filled with only chopped French fries with rice and beans on the side. It's not really a five star restaurant if you're in a big city, but the Oasis is really only a handful--like less than five--restaurants in the town. We had a nice hostess/waitress/bartender (yep, she did it all plus took food orders over the phone). I was highly impressed with her ability to multi-task. The bathroom is clean and they don't mind if my kid runs around the place, so I'm all in. Plus, they make a great margarita--trust me, you will not find a margarita for many, many miles. The only reason this restaurant is still open is because of it's location right outside the park. We order burgers, nachos and a chilly bowl, out of all the food the only edible food was the chilly. Burgers where dry and tasteless was only able to eat 1/4 of it, for the nachos they do serve a big portion enough to share between 3-4 people but what is the point of the big portion when they are inedible. Service was ok, the servers don't wear uniforms look like they came out right out of the street and started serving food. Overall was a disappointing experience, I would have waited and grab lunch at the next town over which is about 30 minutes away. read more

This was one of the only open restaurants available and it was pretty average. A good stop for a fueling but not somewhere I would choose to celebrate a birthday. We have eaten at the Oasis twice now because the Husband is hiking the Colorado Trail and we have based car ferrying and pick up near Saguache (in the San Luis Valley). The first time I had the chili rellano dinner and last night, the daily special of Chicken Fried steak (I had been dreaming of CFS). Both were very good. The mashed potatoes with the CFS were local and delicious topped with authentic cream gravy. And the red sauce on the rellano was equally authentic. Husband always has the green chili hamburger and friend Rich always has the hamburger sandwich; basically hamburger and mashed potatoes smothered in brown gravy. Service is friendly and very laid back. The cherry on top was the $4.50 margarita I deserved after driving 12 hours yesterday, oooweee it kicked my butt and did it deliciously. It's always great when you are traveling and find a restaurant that you can't wait to go back to. I've ridden through Saguache many times, but usually right after breakfast (or lunch) so it never occurred to me to stop. The salsa was great, the green chili was spot on how I like it. Driving from Denver nonstop needing gas and food, I stumbled on this eatery. The special was Mexican hamburger and that's what I had. The green chili was so good that I could have ordered a bowl of it. The hamburger was tasty but overcooked but cardboard would be good with this chili on it. We stumbled on this place during a recent snowboarding trip to the southern part of the state. Tummies rumbling, and on Hwy 285 with no restaurants in site we were happy to find this place. Can I just say..if you are hungry and find yourself in Saguache anytime soon, YOU MUST COME HERE. I had the best goddamn huevos rancheros here. Dare I say the best yet? I had my overeasy eggs served over corn tortillas all slathered in zesty green chile. I'm STILL thinking about this dish weeks later. As authentic as it gets. The O has been a staple in this community for over 25 years. Jesus runs a great restaurant that has nailed the local diner/grub style fare. It features from-scratch recipes that are tasty and consistent. There is plenty of seating so finding a table is fairly do-able, even at some of the more busy times. Definitely worth the stop. The only critique I would have is the food is spicy, which is good and expected, but the drink cups are small and I typically drink the cup too quick so often i find myself sucking on ice. But like I said stop and give it a try. read more

Yelpers, I know what you're thinking, "A 5-star review?" But of course...one star for every extinction-level-event I experienced as a result of eating the food at this joint. Look...I am usually not the kind of person that shares information about their stomach problems and resultant leavings. The only reason I bring it up is to save at least one traveler from their fate. Perhaps I am not being detailed enough... Upon walking in my group of six was greeted by utter silence and barely a glance from the staff. The service was lackluster at best; it took forever to get drink refills (which we had to request) and to pay our bills. The food? Here are some highlights for you: *A hamburger "cooked to perfection" apparently means an overcooked leather hockey puck, as tasteless as it was attractive. *A breakfast burrito that included not only potatoes but also a tortilla...brilliant. There's no improving on this timeless classic. *The Speedy Gonzales included a taco featuring mystery meat and a bean burrito smothered in translucent goo which they referred to as green chili sauce. Although it seemed slow to start, eventually it lived up to its name several hours later in a public restroom in Denver. *The salad was mostly harmless and by default was the winning order of the day. While this is by no means a complete list, I believe it is enough information to steer road-weary travelers (and perhaps some brainwashed locals) away from the scene of the accident. During a recent visit to Saguache, CO, we had the opportunity to eat at the Oasis. Wildfires were raging in mountains just to the south and the sky was dark grey with thick smoke and raining ash. we were a group of 17 road cyclists that had just finished riding 72 miles from Gunnison and were parched dry and hungry. A quick Google search revealed only two eateries in town and one of them was closed! Our only hope for food was the Oasis. So I called to see if they could accomodate our group and the woman who answered said, "I don't know", "I have 40 firefighters coming in anytime now that I have to feed". "Let me see if I can find some more help. Why don't you call back in 10 minutes and I'll let you know." I agreed and hung up. In less than 10 minutes, she had called back and said she could feed us. "Hooray" we shouted and headed over to stuff ourselves. The food was plentiful and tasty. I had chicken enchiladas smothered in green chile and the green chile was some of the best I've had. Our server kept the chips and salsa coming throughout our dinner and the biggest surprise was how good the margs were. I expected them to be made from a cheap sugary artificially flavored mix, but in fact they tasted great. If it was a mix, it was a really good one. While were there, the 40 firefighters arrived, I'm sure even hungrier that we were. As they entered, we gave them a hearty round of applause. As crazy as the night must have been for the Oasis staff, they maintained their good humor and smiles. After dinner, we retreated to the bar area in a room behind the dining area. There is a nice little bar, a pool table, and a tile floor perfect for dancing. we hung out there and danced a little salsa until we tired out and headed back to our motel. The next morning, we returned for a hearty breakfast of pancakes, french toast, huevos rancheros, scrambled eggs, juice and the never-ending pot of coffee. We were all so grateful for their hospitality and kindness. All in all, the Oasis more than lived up to it's name. read more

On our way from Phoenix to Denver, we decided to take the scenic route & happened to come upon this small restaurant in a remote area. The staff was attentive while the food was way above average for such a small diner. I had the honey fried chicken dinner with fries. Chicken was a bit on the small side but delicious while the fries were fresh...not frozen. They purchase much of their items locally & they peel, slice, blanch & deep fry their own french fries. DELICIOUS !!! Looking around, I could see that many of the "locals" frequent this diner which adds to its homeyness. Yes, I would eat there again & recommend this place. After looking at the comments, I realize that we were not the first to discover this little restaurant far from most places. We arrived on a Sunday morning and found the parking lot full- always a good sign. The customers appeared to be locals as you might expect, and we were welcomed and treated as one of their own. However. As newcomers, we didn't know why there was a half order smothered breakfast burrito on the menu...it's because the full order consists of two huge burritos, enough to feed two adults. The fries are really good I also had the portobello burger could have used a bit more seasoning (and maybe toast the bun), but was so happy to find a vegetarian option on the menu!! This place is great. It's fully a local joint, don't expect fanfare when you walk in, you are in a small town, where the locals support the place. Since I'm not really a burger and fries type of person I preferred the Mexican food . Its very very friendly, very professional staff, makes you feel welcome even though it's a very small town place. Decent food at decent prices. Not many choices between Del Norte and Salida and this is one of the best. Nothing to knock your socks off but nothing bad either. Service was prompt and warm. Ingredients were fresh. Dishes lacked in the seasoning dept. but they had some hot sauces to add on at the table. We had Mexican food and the green chili was good but the meat just tasted like ground hamburger with salt and pepper on it. My wife and I have been enjoying the Oasis Restaurant for several years now and we always have a relaxing experience with good service and great food. We take family, friends and customers to dine there every chance we get and have always come away confident that our guests have enjoyed the experience. I recommend it highly and admire the dedication by the owners (whom I barely know) that it takes to be that consistent in running a restaurant as well as this one is run.
