I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding my family's experience at the Build-A-Bear Workshop at The Oaks Mall. My four-year-old son and I visited the store to celebrate his birthday, a tradition we have enjoyed every year since his first birthday. What should have been a joyful surprise became one of the most disappointing customer service experiences I have ever had. When we entered the store, the first sales associate asked when my son's birthday was. I explained that his birthday was June 29 and that we were still within a month of his birthday. She responded, "As long as it's in the month of July." I explained that it was within the past month, and she immediately told me that was not allowed and that I would have to pay full price for the birthday bear. I politely asked, "You can't just honor it?" She walked away to speak with someone I presume was the manager. When she returned, she told me they would honor the $4 birthday bear, gestured toward the eligible bears, turned around, and walked away. She never came back. My four-year-old son stood there waiting, excited for what was supposed to be a birthday surprise. We were left standing without any assistance until another sales associate finished helping another customer. I finally had to ask, "So, is someone going to help us?" The second associate looked confused, looked around for the first employee, and then stepped in to help us. I want to recognize that this second associate was exceptional. She immediately made my son feel special by giving him a birthday badge and enthusiastically celebrating his birthday. The associate who stuffed his bear was also warm, patient, and kind. Their professionalism helped salvage part of the experience, and I am grateful for the care they showed my son. By that point, the excitement surrounding the birthday bear had disappeared. I no longer wanted to continue discussing the promotion after the way we had been treated. Instead, I let my son choose a full-price Chase bear because I wanted to preserve what remained of his birthday celebration. As we were finishing our visit, the original sales associate returned and asked the other employee whether she had collected our name and email "for the birthday bear," despite clearly seeing that my son had selected a full-price Chase bear instead. She continued questioning the other employee while glaring at us. Her demeanor throughout our visit was hostile, dismissive, and unwelcoming. I left the store feeling embarrassed, humiliated, and deeply saddened. What troubles me most is that I watched other families receive warm, attentive, and courteous service while my family was treated differently from the moment we entered the store. Based on the totality of this interaction, I believe we were subjected to discriminatory treatment. While I cannot know the employee's personal motivations, I know how my family was treated, and it stood in stark contrast to the treatment other customers received. As a Black mother, I should not have to wonder whether my race influenced the level of respect and service my son and I received during what should have been a joyful milestone. This annual Build-A-Bear visit is more than a shopping trip. It is one of our family's birthday traditions. Since my son's first birthday, we have celebrated by making his birthday bear together. Those memories are incredibly special to us. This year, one employee's conduct overshadowed what should have been another cherished memory. I am requesting the following: A thorough investigation into this incident, including interviews with the employees who worked that day and a review of any available surveillance footage. Appropriate accountability for the employee whose conduct resulted in this experience. A written apology from Build-A-Bear acknowledging the way my family was treated. Confirmation of the steps Build-A-Bear will take to reinforce its commitment to equitable, respectful customer service for every guest. I chose Build-A-Bear because your company represents joy, inclusion, and creating lasting memories for children. My son deserved to feel celebrated on his birthday. Instead, he witnessed his mother being dismissed and ignored during what should have been a happy occasion. I hope Build-A-Bear will take this complaint seriously and respond in a manner that reflects the values your company publicly embraces. The Oaks is a really nice shopping center; lots of stores to check out. However, my review is for Toy Depot. (I tried looking for the direct listing here, but couldn't find it.) Toy Depot is filled with all kinds of toys, which is great. But, the employee working there wasn't very nice. After picking out a product I wanted to purchase, I couldn't locate where the checkout stand was and realized once I did, some guy was sitting there asleep! I had to make some noise for him to wake up so he could ring me up. What the heck?! I get the place was empty, but sleeping on the job??? To make matters worse, his attitude towards me was unacceptable. Seems like he was grumpy from me waking him up from his power nap. I gave this place 2-stars instead of 1-star because I found what I wanted there. read more

I recently visited this shopping mall for the first time with my girlfriend, and overall, it was a pleasant experience. The interior is stunning and the photos are what interested us in coming here! Renaissance-style stairs and even chandeliers give it an upscale feel. However, I unfortunately did notice one area with several empty or closed stores, which made it feel a bit lifeless compared to the rest of the mall. The outdoor area is a nice touch, featuring 2 levels also with a water fountain, outdoor patio seating, and even a movie theater with a convenient drop-off roundabout. The highlight of our visit was seeing the weekly farmer's market that occurs here in the east parking lot, where local farms offered fresh produce and even gave out orange samples. I learned of different oranges that day and got to taste fresh crop!! After finding it, it was a lovely addition to the day. My favorite part was when I enjoyed purchasing from the PopMart vending machine!! Overall, it was a great visit, and hopefully more things can occur at this mall to grow it more!! read more

The Oaks Mall is definitely my go to mall in the area and I'm happy that they are still making it, despite a lot of mall closures happening. I'm giving them a solid 4 stars. While they are the best mall hands-down in this county, I still reserve my five stars for malls like the Santa Anita mall or the Topanga Mall. So that is just my reference when thinking about how many stars to give this one. It does the job for a local place to shop, but it definitely doesn't have as many Eateries or shops as some of my LA favorites. I come to this mall about once every six months. I am a part of the problem as I am primarily an online shopper. But there are times when you need to go into the stores to try on clothing or to look at something in person so that's when I find myself here. I appreciate that the majority of the mall is full and they're only so many closed stalls and such. They do have a good amount of my classic favorite stores like Anthropologie, Lush, and the major department stores I like such as Macys and Nordstroms. I am also glad that their food court is full and that there is plenty of seating. The exterior restaurants at the mall are also pretty good so I am happy for them that they have been able to maintain some good eateries in the area. Large movie theater attached, it is a good spot to come for shopping and entertainment. This mall is clean and has nice bathroom so always a win. Lastly, I will say that they do hold some nice fundraisers at the mall they give back to the community so that is always nice and we're celebrating. Hoping the mall will make it and I will continue to support as I can, such as being more mindful to shop in person in the future. :) read more

One of my favorite malls after The Collection in Oxnard . The collection is an outdoor mall this one is mostly indoor with some outdoor options . Haven't been here in ages! Very busy mall during the holidays. It's nice to see that this mall has expanded where there are shops outdoors. I the Food Court needs an upgrade. It's a small dining area and very limited choices in food. Other than that, this mall has plenty of parking spaces and was surprised to see a Hallmark store. read more

This is definitely a nostalgia trip for me no matter when and where I am in life, it's been there. I have been going since there was a movie theater that went underground here, since there were wooden tigers in the play place, and of course I remember KB Toys and that Warner Brothers store. This place more-or-less gets a passing grade on nostalgia alone. The store is quite beautiful too. Have you ever been to those dead malls? Eye-sore. Oaks Mall? Eye-candy. It's always a treat coming here. While this isn't as big of a mall like South Coast Plaza or Glendale Galleria, I welcome the less hectic energy. Plus I'm always able to find parking on the ground floor, near the food court They have a Lazy Dog here which is a HUGE plus for me. Tonight they had a cute little European Christmas Market which had glühwein, aebelskivers, and massive pretzels. I recommend checking it out next year because it's something fun for the community. While shopping at the outlets, I decided to go to the mall and look for some Xmas gifts. It was around 620 pm when I arrived, unfortunately, the mall was closing at 7 pm. So we rushed through the mall looking at items as quickly as we could before they closed. Great shopping. They have stores located outside too. Overall, this mall has all the basic stores you need for shopping. The service is good all around the stores and the prices are very economical depending on what you are purchasing. The mall is nice and quiet and their major department stores are Macy's, Nordstrom, and JCPenney. I love coming here for shopping, food and fun. They have great stores with so many options to buy. The people are so helpful and kind. The food quality is amazing!! I also love shopping in person. I like to see and feel the quality of thing I purchase, especially the pricier buys. Unfortunately nowadays, people are mainly going online- making it hard for retailers to turn a profit and then close their in person stores. It is quite sad as it's a better experience to walk around, window shop and experience merchandise in person. I will buy online if it's something that is hard to find in person as online does have wider availability and versatility. I love this mall's children's play area, right by the food court and family restroom. It is spacious and the kids love it! We come just for this, eat and do some shopping. First-The money machine is a scam: We put in $10 and it gave us a $5 card. Second and worst of all the machine we used cheated. Twice we grabbed what we wanted and twice it dropped the toy. SCAM! Victoria Secret although the new remodel has 1/3 the merchandise and 3x the store display kinda scratching my head why they made the store all fixtures low merchandise? Didn't have anyone approach me last time I was in. Didn't see any sales people on the floor and they used to have several. Loft always has great Cust Svc , Lush Excellent Cust Service (great products to travel with many every day hygiene items like shampoo & conditioner so no heavy bottles or liquids to pack) Loli & Pops , Sees for all of our sweet tooth needs always excellent service . The Apple store probably has THE WORST service here. Every time i've gone in with an issue with my phone or for a tutorial always dismissed saying i'm at the wrong place customer service told me wrong info it's always an excuse i never ever get anything accomplished at this store . WOW all of the stores and mall itself closed an hour earlier than usual considering it's an holiday. I mean do get, kinda got caught off guard by it and especially was in the bathroom as well. But, thank goodness I realized before the actual cleaning lady saw in there. Guess, it's the now the new norm as well. It's also includes with most of the inside mall is now actually roped off from diners. I was only coming back from the bathroom for dining part. In which all of the full service restaurants have couple/few bathroom stalls in their bathrooms with one big handicapped ones of course. I like the mall but because of the economy, a lot of stores have left the mall. I still think this mall is very nice and clean. The ONLY complaint I have for the Oaks mall is their bathroom. The faucet is very very stupid. There is never any soap coming out. And when you put to hands there waiting, the dryer built in blows!! Kids like to get the soap out and let the air blow it ALL OVER the bathroom. I wonder who's stupid design is this.... Please remove that stupid faucet. Thank you! read more

We were waiting for a patient at Los Robles Hospital and there was a long delay. Decided to go out to lunch and come back. The concierge told us to go to the OAKS located only a few miles away. We caught an Uber and had a delicious lunch at WOOD RANCH. The service was friendly and BBQ Tri tip and Ribs yummy. The Mall is indoor and outdoor. Was hot 95* so we went to Nordstroms. Who doesnt love Norte's? Time flew and we didn't realize how long we'd been having fun. Our friend called from the hospital and we had to high tail it back there. Uber to the rescue! Like this Mall. Better than Northridge Mall where I live yet not as upscale as Westfield Topanga. I could spend the day here. read more

I love going to the T.O. Mall. It's the next closest mall near me. It's a nice indoor and outdoor, 2 level mall with plenty of shops and eateries within & also has nearby restaurants. Young shoppers might enjoy: Cotton On, PacSun, American Eagle, Urban Outfitters, Vans or Forever21 to name a few. They have mobile stores such as Verizon, T-Mobile, ATT&T, a huge Apple store & even a Spectrum... For those popular brand name stores check out Sunglasses Hut, Skechers, Express, Zumiez, Sephora, Michael Kors & more. Got a sweet tooth? See's Candy is on the 2nd floor. There's also a kids corner with an indoor playground for the kiddies to play at, which also has a food court located next to it on the 1st level for different taste buds. We were in the area for lunch and decided to check out the mall afterwards. It's pretty nice (both inside and outside) but it gets pretty barren in parts. It seems to be a mall less traveled, so if you want some breathing room this is the spot you want to be at (clean restrooms too!). read more

Ten (10) or more years ago, The Oaks mall went thru a massive overhaul. A facelift all around, added a nice movie theatre, an 2-story add outside mall portion connected to the traditional inside mall, restaurants. All in all, it's quite good for a mall experience.
