What should have been a joyful surprise became one of the most disappointing customer service experiences I have ever had. When we entered the store, the first sales associate asked when my son's birthday was. I explained that his birthday was June 29 and that we were still within a month of his birthday. She responded, "As long as it's in the month of July." I explained that it was within the past month, and she immediately told me that was not allowed and that I would have to pay full price for the birthday bear. I politely asked, "You can't just honor it?" She walked away to speak with someone I presume was the manager. When she returned, she told me they would honor the $4 birthday bear, gestured toward the eligible bears, turned around, and walked away. She never came back. My four-year-old son stood there waiting, excited for what was supposed to be a birthday surprise. We were left standing without any assistance until another sales associate finished helping another customer. I finally had to ask, "So, is someone going to help us?" The second associate looked confused, looked around for the first employee, and then stepped in to help us. I want to recognize that this second associate was exceptional. She immediately made my son feel special by giving him a birthday badge and enthusiastically celebrating his birthday. The associate who stuffed his bear was also warm, patient, and kind. Their professionalism helped salvage part of the experience, and I am grateful for the care they showed my son. By that point, the excitement surrounding the birthday bear had disappeared. I no longer wanted to continue discussing the promotion after the way we had been treated. Instead, I let my son choose a full-price Chase bear because I wanted to preserve what remained of his birthday celebration. As we were finishing our visit, the original sales associate returned and asked the other employee whether she had collected our name and email "for the birthday bear," despite clearly seeing that my son had selected a full-price Chase bear instead. She continued questioning the other employee while glaring at us. Her demeanor throughout our visit was hostile, dismissive, and unwelcoming. I left the store feeling embarrassed, humiliated, and deeply saddened. What troubles me most is that I watched other families receive warm, attentive, and courteous service while my family was treated differently from the moment we entered the store. Based on the totality of this interaction, I believe we were subjected to discriminatory treatment. While I cannot know the employee's personal motivations, I know how my family was treated, and it stood in stark contrast to the treatment other customers received. As a Black mother, I should not have to wonder whether my race influenced the level of respect and service my son and I received during what should have been a joyful milestone. This annual Build-A-Bear visit is more than a shopping trip. It is one of our family's birthday traditions. Since my son's first birthday, we have celebrated by making his birthday bear together. Those memories are incredibly special to us. This year, one employee's conduct overshadowed what should have been another cherished memory. I am requesting the following: A thorough investigation into this incident, including interviews with the employees who worked that day and a review of any available surveillance footage. Appropriate accountability for the employee whose conduct resulted in this experience. A written apology from Build-A-Bear acknowledging the way my family was treated. Confirmation of the steps Build-A-Bear will take to reinforce its commitment to equitable, respectful customer service for every guest. I chose Build-A-Bear because your company represents joy, inclusion, and creating lasting memories for children. My son deserved to feel celebrated on his birthday. Instead, he witnessed his mother being dismissed and ignored during what should have been a happy occasion. I hope Build-A-Bear will take this complaint seriously and respond in a manner that reflects the values your company publicly embraces. Gorgeous day today and oddly there wasn't a crowd...could be because everyone was ducking down cold beverages inside a restaurant. Plenty of parking today so maybe everyone was at the beach. Anyway, it was a great family day. Funny we talk every day but when we get together it's like we have seen or heard from each other in a year. Gabbing and grubbing was lots of fun today. You can walk all around The Shoppes but you can also hop aboard the trolley, which is probably a great thing on the hot days. Target and a handful of spa like establishments so one could easily do a Target run, get a mani/pedi, lunch and treat afterwards and make a day of it. Nice change of scenery for those of us in the South Bay.

Adidas was crazy busy especially with customers interested in FIFA World Cup gear from various countries. Nike was super busy too. It's not a glamorous shopping center, but it is large enough to provide a hub for some popular stores, and essential services. In addition to Jo-Ann's, Ralph's, HomeGoods, and CVS are long-time anchors. Recent addition, Marshall's, will soon has a neighbor in Tuesday morning building out now. Many small service businesses tuck in, like a dry cleaner, Lay-La Threading, a marshal arts studio, and tropical fish store. Food-wise, Carl's Jr. has a stand-alone location, recently fully renovated, with drive-through. Snapper Jack's Taco Shack is on the north end, near Jo-Ann's. Alpine German Deli has been a fixture for almost three decades. And Topper's Pizza - puh-leez. Let's talk white sauce sausage pizza. Amazing! Popular with families and sports teams, they keep late hours, which is unusual in T.O. Around the corner from Snapper Jack's and Jo-Ann's is the charming & delicious Little Calf Creamery, plus a florist and an urgent care clinic. From Pier One to Tilly's, with Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Noah's Bagels, Men's Wearhouse, and other…read moreshops thrown in, this center came along within the past 15 years or so to anchor a spot on Moorpark Road at the foot of Thousand Oaks Blvd. A large fountain highlights the area with the food vendors, complete with rustic flooring tiles and landscaping to soften the space. It's somewhere you can hang out for a while and let the city's bustle pass you by. Don't count on the WiFi service, though. Something about the composition of the buildings seems to absorb the signals, so it's not the best place to try to work or even update something on your cell phone. There is plentiful free parking on the Moorpark side of the buildings, and also an area to the north side that can also be used as an overflow on that end of the plaza. While not a huge mall, the smaller, laid back venue seems to work well for this part of town. The Oaks is several blocks way, and ditto for Janss Marketplace. I like the way that the landscaping evokes a semi-tropical feel, adding to the casual appeal. We recently enjoyed sitting by the fountain, cool Starbucks' refreshing drinks in hand, followed by a browsing session at Pier One. All good!

Restrooms are clean. Enough eating places to choose from as well as retail stores. Dave and Busters is new (new for me because I haven't been here in a while ). Good entertainment for all ages. The fountain is definitely a good attraction for kids during summer.

I'm pretty sure they're not technically part of Malibu Country Mart (although more or less in the same plaza) but Broad Street Oyster Co and Prince Street Pizza are also worth a stop. There are quite a few fun outdoor features like a ping pong table, an oversized Connect Four board, a playground and sandbox for kids, and lots of outdoor seating. On a nice day it's fun to just come and people watch. There's also a Whole Foods with a really nice hot bar and olive bar if you want a cheaper food option for lunch. Gets pretty busy on the weekend and parking can be a challenge. There have been times that we've had to park across the street before. Worth a visit while in Malibu.

It would be great to see additions that truly serve and reflect the community. For example, a fountain with a water show, similar to what you see at the Grove or Americana, would be a strong starting point. People and families already feel overwhelmed by the number of shops, and adding more does not necessarily improve the experience. Take Century City Mall as an example. After its remodel (many years ago) added many more stores, I personally stopped going. As someone who works in marketing, I know the first priority is getting people to visit. If visitors lose interest, as I did with Century City, then adding more shops defeats the purpose. I really hope they do not lose sight of what makes the place special. It would be a shame if short-term decisions ended up hurting the atmosphere that people enjoy.
