Mini Yorkshire Puddings

If you're looking for a unique place to go for some local pub fare and good vibes, the Notorious Grey Fox is just the joint! Being built inside an old penitentiary gives this place a fun flare and the staff could not be more down to earth and kind. We were a small group of 3 on a Monday night, so the restaurant was not very busy, but still had a solid stream of people throughout the evening. I couldn't help but comment with my friends as to how awesome the music selection was. To start, we ordered a variety of appetizers to share. First up we had the Rosemary Pork Bites which were incredible. I think we could have easily ordered two of them and still fought for the last one. They were perfectly crispy and the sauce was just the right pairing. Next, we ordered the Mini Stuffed Yorkshires and the Mozzarella sticks. The yorkies were incredible. They were soft, fluffy and packed full of flavour. The mozzarella sticks were nothing fabulous, but they were a good classic staple and would satisfy any picky eater. The star of the show though was the happy hour menu. We each ordered the Chopped Cheese Sandwich (IYKYK) and it was incredible. All I could picture was having a late night hankering for something semi-greasy, delicious and savoury after a long night and this sandwich would do the trick. Better than both a cheeseburger and sloppy joe combined, I will definitely be back for the Chopped Cheese. We finished off by having the Tater Tots which were again on the same level as the mozzarella sticks. Overall, this place has a lot of options, very affordable pricing (especially their happy hour menu) and great drinks on tap. They even had a couple cocktails on tap. My favourite was the Raspberry Juniper and Mint. It was refreshing and simple. If you're looking for a great local place with minimal fanfare but a cool history and great eat and drinks, the Notorious Grey Fox hits the spot!

This is a famous New West watering hole for locals. Went here recently for first time with a group…read moreof guys for happy hour drinks and food on a Saturday. Pizzas were 1/2 price with purchase of a drink -- great deal. Prices for happy hour house lager were reasonable ($6), and they give you a full pint (20oz) -- a rarity these days it seems. Ordered a pizza -- it came out hot and loaded with cheese and toppings. Great tasting tomato sauce, too. If the pizza was just a bit larger, it would've been perfect. The servers were all friendly and efficient, and the pub was packed the entire time we were there from 4-9pm. Loved the old-school decor and ambiance, lots of stained dark wood and nautical themes. It just felt like a cozy, well-lived and worn local neighborhood pub, as one should be. Would I return again? Yes, for the happy hour and pizza deals if passing through New West on a Saturday. Seemed like a well-run spot, and hope it continues to succeed.

Hard to describe. There wasn't a layer of stuff between beef and pastry, and the beef ball wasn't as rare as expected. It was tasty though. Vegetables and mashed potatoes were also good. Cast iron cookie a la mode - baked chocolate chip cookie in a mini skillet with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Who doesn't like either items. Good value. My friends and I left happy.

They were a welcoming bunch of people, with a wider age range than you normally see in a pub (i.e., lots of grannies) and with a blue-collar feeling that has actually become a bit rare in these parts. The beer selection is not for the snobbish (Coors and Canadian aren't even ironic yet, and I confess that upon seeing/hearing my options, I had a moment of "What can I drink?!"), but the awesome selection of diversions include regular meat draws, live bands, karaoke, pool, and my personal new favourite, shuffleboard. A friendly regular showed us how to play, and answered all our stupid questions as we learned, and soon it was like I'd been finessing my slide on the Promenade Deck with Gavin McLeod all my life. The club seems very welcoming of visitors, if you can find the door around the back of the building (go up the path between a couple of wedding dress shops, and make a sharp turn into a scary little parking lot and you're in), and membership is quite shockingly cheap.

They have a huge wing flavour menu, so if you like wings this is your place. I really like the mussels on the appy menu. The tomato broth is so flavourful. Make sure your order a side of garlic bread so you can sop it all up. Fridays they have an amazing prime rib special. We like to go for the special and to play trivia from little h entertainment. More on food: When they advertise a special dinner like their recent craft beer dinner. GO! The chef gets his chance to shine. My usual partner in crime K and I rolled out the pub after an epic 3 course meal paired with a pint of craft beer from parallel 49 for each course. Food again: good Sunday brunch. K loves the Frankie's Benny that has crab cake in it. I am partial to their Caesar special. They recently brought back their build your own Caesar special. Staff: awesome! If Jay isn't behind the bar, he is at the door greeting us. Calvin is the manager and he is always out mingling with the patrons. We have never had an issue with the service that has been noted on other reviews. Maybe we don't notice, because we are too busy mingling with the neighbours come in for a quick dinner. Ambiance: there is a little bit for everyone. They have lots of tvs for sports. Not a fan of UFC but they show all the fights. I tend to avoid those nights. Friday night is Trivia. Prizes include g/c to the pub. Summertime they have a big patio. They are planning to expand it to make it bigger. For someone that lives in the area, this is truly a neighbourhood pub. Always run a neighbour or two. Very welcoming.
