Surprisingly low key neighbourhood pub underneath New Westminster Station. Looks pretty flashy from the outside but it's actually a pretty tiny space. Parking is available on the side streets outside of rush hour. May have to look around for a bit though. The venue consists of a rather large but covered outdoor patio which is quite nice. There is also indoor seating, but this area is quite small and got packed. Staff were friendly and chatty. No complaints. There are many daily specials. I tried the $11 Friday chicken schnitzel. Actually quite delicious. The meat was nice and smashed, and the deep fried beans were better than I expected. The dish also came with some mashed potatios and was covered in gravy. Pretty solid, though I wish the portion was a bit bigger. I'll probably be back to give the other daily specials a try at some point. Food is reasonably priced and is of decent quality. read more

Cozy little pub at the bottom of New West station. Stopped by here recently to grab a bite to eat and have a couple drinks. The food menu isn't huge, but we ended up trying a couple items. We got the mozza triangles and one of the pastas, both of which were really good. Our server was really nice, but we had to keep getting up to go ask for water, napkins, etc. Overall I really like this pub, I just wish they would turn down the heat on the patio! read more

We came here on a Saturday night and got a table on the patio. It was packed inside and the patio was also full house after 730 pm. I love the open fire on one of the table. There are 2 heat lamps overhead so choose your table wisely if you are scared of the cold. The nachos was really good but you should eat it fast as the tortilla chips got soft after a while. The fish and chips was also delicious. Crispy beer battered cod with crunchy chips. I would take this over the other fish and chips place on AYCE nights. Maybe this is more of a beer place. My Old Fashioned cocktail was not very nice. It lacked a smoothness and smokiness which I had come to know and love in a good Old Fashioned. Maybe it is the type of alcohol used, as it has a sharp bite to it. Service can be better as it seemed like only one person was on the floor. The ladies room has 2 stalls which are both well lit. The area around the sink however is pretty dim, maybe due to a burnt out bulb. The toilet paper and paper towels are well stocked. The best word for the decor is brown. Very brown. Nothing automatic, but there's a large mirror to keep you beautiful. Clean. 3.5 out of 5 flushes. read more

I can't believe the level of inconsistency. We sat at our booth for at least 10 minutes, watching while the five servers chatted with each other, playing on their cell phones. Finally, DH caught someones eye and she promptly came over, apologizing. She was our primary waitress until the girl who SHOULD have been paying attention brought us our food. She said nothing and didn't check back. Eventually, the other server came over again, apologized again and said she officially took over our table and could she get us anything. Yeah, a discount please? It took well over an hour to get food and drinks and paid up. Thankfully, we bought our movie tickets before we went to grab a bite. Now, on to the food - another source of inconsistency. Last time? Surprisingly good. This time? Surprisingly not. My sandwich was goopy and had a distinctly preserved flavour.... some of the sauces, again, had to have come from a jar. DH got the same thing as last time but this time it was not nearly as good, with the overall presentation even lacking. They really need to find a way to sell the beers better. The food here is awesome. We tried a few different dishes and thoroughly enjoyed them all! Deep Fried Pickles were delicious, the dry ribs were perfection, the clam chowder was an all around favorite and finally... the Buffalo Chicken Wrap was yum yum yum!! Also, they have an amazingly crafty beer selection. Lots to choose from and some very difficult beers to find on tap. I am always impressed when I see the neat things they've brought in. The staff are all really nice, there are loads of TVs (including a personal TV in some of the booths!!) and would be epic for watching a game. They are directly beside the skytrain station and there is plenty of parking in the underground for the skytrain and the grocery store etc. I would definitely come check this place out. The craft brew selection here is amazing. I usually end up with my favourite, Pyramid Apricot Ale, but on Wednesday nights, the beer flight special usually encourages me to at least sample a couple of others from what must be the best list of beers in New West. For $6.99 it's a good deal, and with a couple other good friends, you can mix and match and trade and try a lot! (Hops could probably benefit from creating a menu with better tasting notes, however, such as BierCraft or St. Augustine have done.) It's a good place to get drunk (it doesn't take much for me) - a relaxing atmosphere of brown colours and cozy booths. I know some people are offended by the dress code, especially with all the construction crews around these parts right now. These guys are salt of the earth, but I think Hops has tried to make a break with the rubby-dub taverns of the past and bring in a different crowd, and it looks like they've been successful. The location just outside New West Skytrain is terribly convenient. Their cold beer and wine store next door carries about every beer in the pub and lots more, so even if I don't have time to stop in for a pint, I can still bring home the barley sandwiches. read more

Was her for Super Bowl 49; New England vs defending champ Seattle SeaHawks game. The waitress was very patient with us and the kitchen accommodating. The have a variety of favours for the wings and I like spices. One the menu is a sriracha & honey. I asked if they can making straight sriracha and they did. So good! Although we did not sit outside they do have a covered, heated large patio making great for the weather we can experience here on the west coast. Definitely will be back. read more

Terrible place. I came from work and a long trip off a mountain. Thought I could come grab some food and a drink before heading home , omfg I wish I went home, you won't I promise. Listen to this one. "My first chance to YELP". So I walk into this dive next to a liquor store just off a train station with homeless people everywhere. I don't mind homeless people. I got no beef just a dollar for ya. I notice the bartender wearing no mask btw, gave me a look up and down and seemed more like a bouncer. I had two pieces of luggage. I should say, I don't think it was a race thing. Cause I thought I looked fine. But I'm tan and native. Any way moving along. I asked him if I could leave my suitcase bag by the door and he shrugs his shoulders like some wanna be wise guy type. So I do anyway. Then this brawd wearing a mask comes over. Asks me for ID, I hand it to her, sees my Alberta ID (I'm 37 btw) and she asks for another piece along with the one she already has. I'm thinking ffs, I just worked 10 hours on the side of a mountain, I want food, I want beer, Vancouver traffic on a long weekend is a nightmare at times, this was a time. So I asked why. She says it's the LAW in BC with a head nod and tilt, like as if she was talking to a bad child. She then points to my phone and says I can look it up if I want. She blinked excessively as well and she didn't appear to need to. Her eyes were breathing and appeared to be fine at a further investigation on my part. I didn't look it up. What I looked up was if bartenders have to wear masks. And I found out they have to wear masks and gloves. I'm not reporting this btw. No need to fk with someone's livelihood over ignorance. Besides like I even care what the law is. When the bartender is not wearing a mask making drinks and clearly not social distancing. He's pouring drinks and his server is trying to school me on laws. . I asked her if I could ask her a personal question. "do I like a homeless person?" She said noooooo and asked me why I'm asking kinda snarky. Nawwww it was definitely snarky. The alternative was match her ignorance with my own brand of it. I chose to Yelp finally. There's a quick judgement call in my head. I choose beer and food over some under-qualified over worked I gave her the second ID, I know most people with pride would say fuck it. But I need a break. And because I was just fkn exhausted and not in the mood to bicker with some newbie server. I'm not mad anymore, actually. The kitchen was closing I. 3 min on a Friday before a long weekend. That's not smart business I thought to myself. It was 8 o'clock. But I stayed to not finish this beer and leave her a penny for her pursuit with her law career. My word of advice along with the penny is don't go into law, it costs more than a penny. or have anything to do with it or customers or service at all. Just pick another gig sweetie. The bartender too. You shouldn't be serving at all during covid. I should of went to cactus or earls. They're on point at least with personal protective equipment. Gloves and masks. Also there's drunk homeless people out front of your establishment 24/7 begging for dollar bills. This pub also didn't take any names or numbers. From anyone at all. Or me. If there was a covid outbreak. This would be a mess for all these patrons and me . Actually I should go right now. On the way out I'm gonna ask him if I can see both pieces of his personal protective equipment please lol. I won't be back. Lol so I asked him. He said it's not the Law. I discovered Hops Pub when I was looking at Sunday drink specials in New Westminster. That's when I found Hops menu which read $6.99 all you can drink mimosas. All day. I had to actually call to confirm what I read was true. It was. Hurray! A group of 4 of us arrived around dinner time on Sunday. We all ordered a round of mimosas and a bunch of the half priced appetizers which included: two pounds of wings, poutine, and sweet potato fries. At the beginning of our visit, our server was on top of her game. Not only did she check in with us regularly but she occasionally brought a refill of mimosas without us having to ask. As the restaurant got busier, she became less attentive, which makes me wonder if they were understaffed. Still, we ordered another round of appetizers which included coconut and garlic prawns, as well as the meatball sliders. Out of all the appetizers we tried, the coconut prawns were my favourite. I also really enjoyed the bread that came with the garlic prawns. As for the sliders, they were massive! We all expected something much smaller. By the end, we were all really full and asked to take our food to go. Oddly, we were told that they don't provide to-go containers. Basically, if you can't finish your food, it's just going to get thrown out. I don't understand that concept or agree with it. I mean, we're paying for the uneaten food, so why can't we just take it home with us instead of wasting it? Despite being extremely full, we put in an order for the mini donuts. We realized we had been waiting a long time and contemplated cancelling the order. Finally, our server came by again and asked if we would like the bill. I guess she forgot about our order. She split our bill without any issues and told us if we needed anything else, to ask her (rather than rushing us out). She even offered all of us glasses of water, which was appreciated. By the end of the night, I had drank 6 mimosas and enjoyed the appetizers. I think Hops just needs to increase their staff during peak periods and they'll find a lot more repeat business coming their way. read more

Came here for the fist time today and had vanilla French toast with sausage. It was pretty yummy, but could have used some fruit and whipped cream to cut the sugar. I sat on the patio and it was really nice, although you don't get much sun. Today was hot so the shade was welcome. They even have a little gas fireplace table that you can sit around, which is a nice touch. The wait staff was efficient and friendly too. read more

This place is not good at all. On my first visit to Canada me and my colleagues came here for our first meal. The place seemed hip, trendy, and fun. It was nothing like this: I had to get the host from the inside and she didn't even seat us. Didn't bring water to us. So we ordered beer. The food was not good at all, my colleague ordered a $12.99 salad which he could have made at home for way less. Server was all over the place and it wasn't even busy. Suggestion to manager: train your servers and hostess on approachability, make sure they are able to speak about the menu. read more

So after my first review of Hops I got a message for the bar owner saying the pricing was a mistake, they've fixed it and I should come back again. Well this is the first chance I had to go back, and the manager wasn't lying. In fact things have gotten a lot better there. They've got a GREAT selection of micro brews from BC, Canada and the US in bottles and on tap. The atmosphere and service are still good. I think this place is a great addition to the New West pub scene. read more

I'm breaking my own rule and giving out my first 3 star review ever, because the food here is really good, but the service is really variable. (I've been 3 times to eat, and a handful of times to just drink) Every time i've gone the food has been really well done, the other day I had the teriyaki burger i think it was called and it was really good (a little messy but hey its a burger i'd be a little disappointed if it wasn't :D). The downside is the hit or miss service, usually the service is good and I would've given 4 stars but... there's this one blond lady who is just terrible. She never smiles, takes forever to come around, and has never not screwed up my/my tables order. [and I don't ask for anything extra or weird, I swear its stuff as simple as: I want this beer please... brings completely different one... I sigh and say "oh that's okay" because i mean its still beer w/e i'll drink it but really?! and both time she screwed up food orders too]. Service could be faster, but later I was served by a sexy 20-something-yr.-old, so I guess it made up for it. Last time, I went to Hops with a movie group, since the Landmark Cinema is right above, at the Skytrain Station, and the guy I'd invited acted like a real jerk, so I blamed the response on him, and wasn't as surprised by the "service" as I might have been. Just wanted to have a quick bite while in the neighbourhood. Our waitress was pretty slow taking our order but it eventually got done. We ordered fish & chips and the brisket shepherd's pie. The fish and chips were flavourless. Pretty inedible without gobs of tartar sauce. The fries it came with were decent. The brisket shepherd's pie was awful. The brisket looked like meat that was boiled for 2 days. It was a stringy mess that you had to roll on your fork and eat like pasta. It looked like the stuff that comes out of my dog's ass when she's been eating fluff or chewing too much on a rope toy. Flavour was irrelevant because the texture was so bad. I scraped all the meat off to get to the mashed potatoes on the bottom. Yeah, that's right, the mash was on the bottom. We really should have gone...anywhere else. read more

I think the location of this pub is very convenient. I love being able to hop off the sky train and hop back on after i have a beer or eat some dinner. The food at this pub is awesome. I have never had anything i didn't like (except maybe the mac n' cheese) and everything is priced within reason. Also they have a great selection of beer. It would be neat if they had a little sampler tray of all their different kinds of beers. For me the only thing that holds me back on being a regular at this bar is the fact that the service sucks. The last time i was there i sat for 20 minutes until i was even acknowledged. I want to make excuses for them about maybe them being extremely busy. However, i know that the waitress/bartender was too busy flirting with the men at the bar rather than taking orders or making drinks. read more

Pretty decent little place! Wandered in parched after a walk and was amazed by the interior right away. The servers were friendly and attentive, without being obnoxious. They seemed to genuinely enjoy their job and kept busy when they weren't helping tables - no standing around looking bored! A huge plus for the ambiance factor for me. As a tun of other people have mentioned, the craft beer selection is vast and impressive. I had a few questions which were answered knowledgeably, and some that had to be checked on. I appreciate that, if you're not sure, just say so! I'd rather a server go find an answer for me, as opposed to lying. Food here is average, as can be expected. I had a half-wrap and an iceberg wedge salad. The salad was over dressed (not terribly so) but still edible and the wrap was very plain. I wouldn't return here for a meal, maybe just some random pub snacks with a pint or two. Stopped by for a quick lunch and a pint before going to the movies. It was wing day (39 cents) so I partook. The wings were big, crispy and not cheap. (seriously, is there anything worse than a pub that swaps out the good wings for crappy ones on wing day?) Craft pints were reasonably priced an the first one I asked for was sold out. Contrary to what many people say, this is a good thing. It means people here order the craft beers and don't focus on Coors Light. Tap turnover is important in any taphouse. The waitress/bartender was very personable and gave everyone prompt service. The menu is a little generic but I'm a foodie so I'm always looking for unique things to order. This was my first time visiting Hops, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Now admittedly I wasn't going in with high expectations, but the pub was clean, the atmosphere was good. and the food was tasty. If you're a New West local, this is the perfect place to go watch a Canucks game. There are plenty of TVs (including sets in the booths), daily drink specials and lots of above par pub food to choose from. I had the "Cap'n Highliner" which is essentially Fish'n Chips on a bun. The cod was perfectly cooked, and the batter was crispy, it was topped with a tangy tartar sauce, and coleslaw...yum. I've seen some of the other reviews complain about the service. While our waitress wasn't the friendliest I've ever had, she was very attentive, and we didn't have to wait long for our food. read more

Another pretentious pub with allusions of grandeur. This dingy little dive had the audacity to refuse service to 3 hard working, well paid tradesmen from the very large construction site across the street. In a few months when the site really gets going, there will be hundreds of trade men and women who will know that this place will reject them because of the work that they have chosen. Really really bad customer service!!! Both the Manager and the bartender were super rude to me and my friends, just because one of my friends gave a Brazilian driver's licence and a canadian credit card under his name as two pieces of ID. But they said in a really rude way they will not accept his Brazilian driver's licence as a piece of ID just for being a brazilian document. The thing is, we've been to this same pub several times before and this same friend always showed this document and they always accepted. Both the bartender and the Manager yelled at us and practically kicked us out of the bar. I'm also a manager and I would never treat my customers that way. They definitely need to learn how to give good customer service. I don't recommend it at all!!!! read more

This place is just under the SkyTrain station in new west. I started coming here when my friend posted there are cheap wings on Thursdays. The pub is very comfy with many big screen TVs. Perfect place to watch the Canucks etc. The servers are very friendly and they do all they can to make service amazing. I've been coming to hops for 3 years now and the people there always stoked when there regulars come. They have specials very often. The food comes out quick and fresh. The servers also like to get to know their customers too. Highly recommended. read more
