Thought we would try this place out for a nice dinner out. Our clams came out still frozen and all the food that was cooked on the grill tasted like grill oil it was horrible and expensive. The lounge is a very nice place for a drink. We will be back to try the bar food and I will update my review if the experience is better. The staff was very attentive and nice. We aren't really complainers but we did ask that the claims be remade. She apologized and sent us out extra to make up for it. read more

When I saw the 3.5 stars we debated whether to give this restaurant a go or not. I'm so happy that we did! The food, service and drinks were all 5 star!! We enjoyed smoked trout and ahi tuna to start with followed by Alaskan crab with salad, baked potato and three choices of butter! This place is a little jewel in Salmon. read more

Have eaten here twice before over the last six months, and the food was good . Tonight it was terrible, my mother ask for her steak to be cook with a little pink, it came out very rare, sent it back and it came out rare to medium rare. Two of us ordered the special, prime rib. My BF and I were tired after a long day of driving and exploring. Needed dinner but not fast food. Several of the places we saw online were closed for the day or closed period. We settled on Shady Nook. When we arrived, there were three seating options; the lounge, dining room, or patio. It was warm so we stayed inside in the dining room. I read another review on here and discovered that time building may have been a hospital way back when. It's an interesting building with equally interesting décor. Our hostess was friendly and smiling. She led us to a table, made sure it was to our liking and gave us menus while reciting the days specials. Our server was next up and took our drink orders. I asked for a margarita on the rocks with extra salt. She didn't disappoint, plenty of salt. My BF had the ribeye special and I chose the prawns, grilled. Our salads arrived promptly and were crisp and fresh. My only comment would be why whole baby carrots were in there. Kind of clunky. Anyway, our entrees came out next. The ribeye was tender and perfectly cooked, and my prawns were grilled in the shell. Both were fantastic. We were offered dessert, but we were stuffed. Food was great and worth the money. Stayed in the campground just down the way and decided for our last night in Salmon we would go out for a nice family dinner. Called at 4pm when they opened and asked to make a reservation but was told that we didn't need to and we could just come in and be seated. When we showed up we were told that they couldn't seat us because we didn't have a reservation and that it would be an hour and a half wait for us with 2 hungry little kids. I understand that businesses are short staffed right now and they are doing their best, but this is just simply poor management and bad customer service. read more

What a HORRIBLE place and TERRIBLE owners. I would rather eat roadkill than eat dinner at this place. They SUCK with service and communicating with the customer's when they run out of food. We called before they opened to give a courtesy heads up only to get terrible terrible service. We all order food. Sat at the table for at least an hour before being told that pretty much everything we ordered they were out of. For the owners to say the crap they did to our post, especially since they weren't there to witness what happened is so tacky and very unprofessional of them. SHAME on you guys. read more

This restaurant is a gem and I think is the best place to eat in Salmon! The service was awesome, everything we ordered was cooked perfectly, and the cocktails and beer were very reasonably priced. The restaurant is in an old house and has a lot of charm and character. The calamari was cooked perfectly - not rubbery like it can easily get. The starter salads were excellent (try their house made vinaigrette!), the local rainbow trout was also cooked perfectly, and the prime rib was good. Don't miss the mud pie for dessert, but definitely plan on sharing it! read more

Great dinner at Shady Nook. In town for a hockey tour enemy and we were ready for something other then pizza. Service was fantastic, drinks were generous and inexpensive. Best dish was the clams. Clams in Idaho? Yup, excellent! Steaks were good. Only downside was cold baked potatoes, but we were so full at that point we couldn't have eaten them anyway. I would have given this a one star but I was sitting at a table with friends that just rave about this place. But tonight, I think the cook spilled the salad dressing in my salad and then a later spilled the salt on my soggy tri-tips. On top of that it took almost an hour to get served. Why do people love this place? Everybody at my table was asking the same question. If you want a great steak in Salmon, go to Bertram's. We are mystified by the 5 star reviews. It took 40 minutes to get our drinks. One steak was burnt to a crisp when requested as medium, the pasta dish was cold and the size of a child's portion. The food at Sweet Water next door looks better. read more

Baked potato was "not recommended", when I asked for mashed, they were out. Waitress said rice was "really good" but it was disgusting and I couldn't eat it, too salty. Ordered steak with bacon wrap (and mushrooms on top), was told well after I ordered it that they were out of that steak and a smaller one had been subbed but I would be charged less for it. When steak arrived, it was not wrapped in bacon. Canned mushrooms on side, possible soaked in wine? They were gross. When check came, it was someone else's.Everything took forever and a day, but the waitress apologized a bunch about that. I could have handled the wait if the food had been better. Very nice people working there, but not so competent. The bar space is really cool. read more

Stayed at the Stagecoach, walked to the Shady Nook for dinner. Ribeye steak and baker very good. Lime cilantro vinaigrette on the salad delicious! Had the special Cowboy Mac n Cheese with jalapeños& bacon in it, it was delicious and could have fed 4 people. Oddly they have edamame as an appetizer, which I love...they were fabulous and a ton of them. The wine was ok but we choose the bottle so that's not on them. The service was attentive and fine but I do believe we may have been one of the first tables this young lady had ever served, maybe 2nd night of being a waitress ever, she was quite sweet. Place closed down the grills before time to close and had super limited food choices. Girl that seated us said full menu. And the rude waitress said they were only using fryers even though it was 2 hours before closing... wtf! All the tables in the lounge were dirty and needed cleaning off before anyone could sit down. Bar none the best food in salmon! Beautiful atmosphere, friendly staff, and amazing owners. The food is fresh and delicious, big portions, and great prices. What a wonderful restaurant! We stayed in Salmon one night on our way to Montana. We loved the food, décor, atmosphere and our server. I had the coconut prawns. They give 6 large ones!!! On our way home from Montana, we looked for another restaurant to try......... what is going on with the town?? Most were closed even though they advertised open. Back to Shady Nook we went. I went there last week for a get together with friends. I planned on only ordering a drink or two but someone ordered some bar food so I ended up having wings and potato skins. Yum! I've been craving some good bar food. The place was packed. The bar area is very nice and they have multiple tv screens. I do wish they were open before 4pm so watching NFL football there was a possibility. However, if you're craving some yummy bar food, this is place to go. I've eaten here on and off for the last 20 years. I've seen it go from 5 stars to one. "Horrible ". After the last two times I said, "I'm done", but my wife wanted to try it one more time. I don't know where the 5 star comments are coming from, must be friends. I really think the meals are pre made and just sit till someone orders and then a trip to the Microwave. Last night I had Prime Rib. I've never seen prime rib full of gristle. My medium prime rib was well done and I had to cut all the gristle out. Prime is usually tender, not this one. Instead of a steak knife, they should have given me a chain saw. The baked potato must have been baked the day before or at least 12 hours previously. I had just finished putting my salad dressing on the excellent salad and the server came out with our dinner. What's that tell you? MICROWAVE. By the time I finished the salad, the steak was cold. My wife had Penne Pasta which was drowned in cheese. I don't know if it's related or not but she spent the morning in bed and she said she may have food poisoning. She is never sick. I am really sorry to see a once great Restaurant go down the tubes. We gave it 3 chances after bad meals. "NEVER AGAIN". read more

I love this place. I have never been disapointed here, never. I visit Salmon a couple times a year and this is the "good" food in town. The staff is so attentive, thoughtful and accommodating. I had the rack of lamb last night and it was simply the most tender, delicate, perfectly cooked rack of lamb I have ever had outside my own kitchen, and I love rack of lamb. Everyone at my table enjoyed the food and experience. Also,the bar is a must, it's nice to be someplace that doesn't cheat you on the pour. read more

Pretty dark lighting throughout the whole restaurant. There also was a fairly large amount of time we waited after being sat before we even saw our waitress. The whole time we were here we only even saw here one time to take our order and drinks at the same time, and then once more after that. After that we had a couple of different people who would check on us, one of which being the hostess who sat us. This is Salmon, Idaho, not a culinary center by any stretch. That being said, if you want something more than fast food or pub food this is where you will land. Decent sized dining room, big bar/lounge, and a patio. We ate here twice last year and again last weekend, the night before the Salmon marathon. The fish is fresh and done to order. I usually get trout - a very generous portion, absolutely no bones and well seasoned without trying to hide anything. My husband likes the salmon (ironically from Alaska this time of year). The baked potatoes are cooked perfectly, lightly crispy skin and creamy inside even before adding any toppings. Not a great wine selection as this is more of a beer drinking town. We've had mediocre service and great service. Haven't tried any steaks. Adjust your expectations for a rural farm town and you will have a decent meal. read more

I am sitting here now, waiting for a beer I ordered 45 minutes ago to arrive. I did go to the bar, but the bartender grunted that it would be "a minute". I waited several and gave up!! I saw three friends in the bar who asked if we had been waited on, I told them yes, but still hadn't got a beer. They had waited so long they gave up and left. One of the worst tasteless, not cooked correctly steak and the mashed ordinary potatoes were cold. We waited a long time... Place was empty and that should have been the 1st clue. Took 17 minutes to get water, had to ask for bread. Menu is not the one that is on line. Don't bother here... Place needs a chief, staff, menu and decor overhaul! read more
