This is not somewhere you would come for a blazing night out. This is what you'd call a Sunday pub. Sadly the decor is stuck somewhere between the 70's and a catholic boarding school. It's certainly unimpressive, but that's not the reason you would come here. Located just off the M62, the Castleford and Normanton exit. This is a pleasant no nonsense pub, with a couple of excemptional ales, that serves tasty 'homecooked' traditional food at reasonable prices. I'll just say that the real ales here are very good. Although not a huge selection, the Taylors Landlord pints I've finished here have been excellent. As you may know it's hard to keep ale, but the rising sun has nailed it. The chap who supplies the Landlords ale even drinks it in here (never trust a skinny chef, but trust one who eats his own food?). On that note the locals are friendly too. If you're passing through and have a hunger for some steak and ale pie, a decent Sunday roast or just a nice ale I'd recommend passing through here. You can't go wrong. But if you're after somewhere to drink the night away, enjoy comfort, or interesting cuisine, I'd suggest you keep on driving.

Three of us ordered the sirloin steak, all of us asked for medium-rare, all of them arrived fully brown all the way through. I guess the sauce was OK and the herby chips were nice. All in all, I'd recommend it for a drink but not for a meal, pity because as I said, its a gorgeous little place.

The wood panelling is obviously edwardian or maybe even earlier with church-pew-like seating of genuine old hard dark woods and cabinets and chests. The beers on offer are standard fare alongside real-ale offerings from Clarkes Brewery - a small independent brewery based in Wakefield. Several items were not available which left our gluten free diners pretty much without choice. Food quality has definately declined since my last visit and we left a lot of half full plates. I opted for scampi and both myself and another member of the party found the scampi unpalatable and possessing an odd after taste.outside the environs have pretty much been left to deteriorate with the result that the steps are unsafe. Surprisingly, when I reported this they were already aware and yet had not taken any action.

They're open at different times, so I'll write about them differently. Bar 50 Fifty is the grown up version, that's already established, but it's the layout that amuses me. It's set out like an actual ski lodge. The mock lodge comes complete with stone fireplaces and moose antlers and lots of wood panelling. There's a choice of seating, wooden tables and chairs, bar stools, or big comfy leather seats. Depending on what night you go, you can catch the footy match on the big screen, or enjoy local live music. Hit the bar up on a weekend and there's a house DJ playing popular music for you to bop along to. All in all a good place to end your ski day, or a place to just drive out to and enjoy the experience.
