I'll start by saying I was torn between 3 and 4 stars, but if you come here for the reason detailed below I would have to rate it 4. This is not somewhere you would come for a blazing night out. This is what you'd call a Sunday pub. Sadly the decor is stuck somewhere between the 70's and a catholic boarding school. It's certainly unimpressive, but that's not the reason you would come here.
Located just off the M62, the Castleford and Normanton exit. This is a pleasant no nonsense pub, with a couple of excemptional ales, that serves tasty 'homecooked' traditional food at reasonable prices.
I'll just say that the real ales here are very good. Although not a huge selection, the Taylors Landlord pints I've finished here have been excellent. As you may know it's hard to keep ale, but the rising sun has nailed it. The chap who supplies the Landlords ale even drinks it in here (never trust a skinny chef, but trust one who eats his own food?). On that note the locals are friendly too.
If you're passing through and have a hunger for some steak and ale pie, a decent Sunday roast or just a nice ale I'd recommend passing through here. You can't go wrong.
But if you're after somewhere to drink the night away, enjoy comfort, or interesting cuisine, I'd suggest you keep on driving. read more
