The pub stands rather grand along Harrogate road and appears to be rather a popular destination due to the carvery they have each weekend. Happily, since we were running on 4pm by the time we were ready for something to eat there was no queue at all and sorting out the grub was a quick-march swiftly sorted deal. The carvery offered three meats, gammon, beef and turkey, and a whole host of veg. There were all the usuals, and nothing too fancy like courgettes, but the addition of caramelised onions was a real treat. As is the problem with carveries, the majority of the veg on offer was a little over cooked on the hot plates, and the roast potatoes were a touch disappointing. Not all that crispy, but the mash was to die for! Essentially, it's a lovely pub and the carvery will certainly sort you out but it's not overtly special. Then again, at about £7, it's rather good value so who cares? Especially when hung over... The plus points were that the gammon was incredible, fully tasty and cooked wonderfully, and the portions were humongous. The chap serving the meats was lovely and extremely generous in his carving - my boyfriend received an incredibly large piece of gammon. The pub itself was delightful too - a proper country pub vibe, cosy little nooks and a large outdoor area in which to sit when the sun decides to visit us once more. The selection of drinks included a number of real ales, which appeared to be local, and all the usual fare.

It's got an air of exclusivity about it being in such a well-to-do area, but it's not pretentious, which impresses me. It's always quite lively and full of nice people, on both sides of the bar. Prices are standard, and the food is definitely better than the average pub fare, and it has real ales on tap, which I wasn't expecting. Lola is the other dog but she doesn't like me talking about her behind her back so to save time let's just say Monkey is the cuddly one. *looks round nervously to check I'm not being watched* East Keswick is just up Wetherby Road- and the great news is you can get the 98 and 99 buses from town to RIGHT OUTSIDE THE DAMN PUB DOOR! Can't argue with that logic. The pub has a Snug at the front where dogs of all shapes, sizes and aromas are made to feel truly welcome. There's a tv for catching up with sports, an open fire, a doggly bowl and some cracking local beers and ales on offer. I had a pint of Mary Jane from the Ilkley Brewery and it was luscious. We'd first bunged the dogs in the car and had lunch in the restaurant part of the pub- which in contrast to the homely snug is really pretty classy for a pub meal. I think an evening meal here would impress. The staff were warm and welcoming and we had 3 courses for £15.95 each, with a decent bottle of red wine this brought the bill to just over £50, which is pretty reasonable for doing it 'all' and less pricey options were available e.g 2 courses for £12.95. This is for Sunday Lunch and there are weekday menus too. To start I had chicken liver pate which was smooth with a decent portion of chutney. Ade had ham terrine which was again sizeable and competently done. Both dishes were well presented and came with Melba toast. All very very good fare. For mains I went for the lamb cutlets and Ade the beef roast. The portions were again pretty sizeable, the roasts generous, crisp yet fluffy, mixed veg was properly al dente and had nice variety.....but it was the lamb that really stood out above everything else. Four almost fist sized hunks of perfectly cooked quality meat, pink on the inside, melt in the mouth and with a subtle and creamy peppercorn sauce to lubricate the GIANT mouthfuls I was pushing into my greedy face. It was sublime and my pleasure sensors were bordering on ridiculous. All this scumptiousness was topped off by Ade's dense and super sweet Sticky Toffee Pudding and the heavenly dark matter that made up my Hot Chocolate Fudge Cake. Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes. We staggered back to the car to 'release the hounds' and then enjoyed the friendly snug for a slow drinking pint as we digested our heavy yet heavenly loads. Monkey in particular made SUCH a friend of the barman that every time he passed by and patted her head she jumped up, wrapped her front paws around his thigh and tried to walk off with him. I thoroughly recommend The Duke of Wellington if you are out that way, and as a diversion for excellent food/drinks and company even if you are not. With a bus to and from the door there's no excuse my little Leodensians, go get some fresh air and hearty fare.

There are three issues to raise: * The disgusting, rancid food we were given to eat. * The rudeness of the staff. * The failure of the manager to address my complaint. Firstly, the food. We had eaten our main course, and some of my party ordered Eton Mess for pudding. As soon as it arrived, those who had ordered it dived straight in, but the first spoonful for all three of us tasted absolutely disgusting, and we had to spit it out. The cream had gone off so badly that, even after the dishes had been taken away, a bad, sewer-like smell hung around the table for at least 10 minutes. Secondly, the staff. I went to the bar and said that our food had gone off. Rather than a member of staff coming to the table to sort it out, I was told I had to bring it to the bar myself for them to check. Of course, when I did this, he agreed it was off; there was no choice - it really stank - but in the conversations that followed, he made several statements that I found unnecessary and absolutely unacceptable. Defending himself, he told me that 'we don't taste the food before we bring it out, you know'. When I told him the food was absolutely disgusting, he replied that 'I'm not able to give you compensation'. He did later make an apology, but very reluctantly, and only by saying 'I'm sorry that this has been an inconvenience for you', missing the point that this had been a really horrible experience and more than an inconvenience. After I had decided to make a complaint, I politely asked him his name, and he ignored me, blanking me, turning his back, and walking away. Lastly, the manager. I made a formal complaint to the Dexter about our meal and the behaviour of the staff. A couple of days later, the manager called me. I was with friends, but I picked up the phone, and asked if she could call back in a couple of hours. She seemed taken aback by this and said, 'But I want to get this signed off', as if ticking the boxes was all that she was concerned about. She did call back, though, and did listen to my complaint. She asked what she could do to resolve the situation for my party and me, and I gave her a couple of ideas. She said she would consider them and get back in touch with me after a couple of days. That was almost two weeks ago, and I have not heard from her since. To sum up: The food stinks. That adjective can also apply to the behaviour of the staff. And also apply to the lack of professionalism of the manager. This has been my worst experience of eating out ever, by a very long way; I have never experienced anything close to this. I never want to go there again.

The building is beautiful, both inside and out. Inside several open fireplaces burned next to comfy leather sofas..which was a tad smokey. Bypassing the large plentiful bar we sat ourselves in the corner ( this place is huge!). Once seated I could take in the beautiful antique wood and collectibles. On the walls hung old tiles and photographs and the ocassional bed warmer. Dangling from the ceiling were vintage lampshades..I felt at home. Sending him to the bar to order a cherry leifman..I browsed the plentiful menu. This was essentially posh pub grub at a generic £5 a starter and £10-15 for a main. It took me awhile to decide ...the languistines and mussels, squid and chorizo, beetroot tartatan, sea bass and other dishes all sounded good. Himself ordered the fish and chips and I went for garlic cheesey mushrooms and chorizo squid. The waiter was really pleasant who first provided us with a large wooden carrier laden with various condiments. The food soon followed. My squid was as tender as you like, flavoured nicely by the chorizo . The mushrooms were cooked to perfection, however the sauce had a little excess Oil..a little bit of kitchen roll to rest the mushrooms before adding to the epic cheese sauce would have made a big difference..still tasty though.. the fish and chips were an epic portion, and the home made double dipped chips were divine. Overall, I really loved the ambience of this pub and its decor. The food was creative and tasty and service was good. The bar also had a nice range of ales and beers..I bet a Sunday carvery here would tick all the boxes too.

There are plenty of big comfy, cosy seats indoors and few picnic bench style seats out in front of the pub. This makes it the ideal pub for warming up in when it's cold and also the ideal pub for enjoy the sunshine when we're lucky enough to get it. It's part of the Vintage Inns chain but doesn't have too much of a chainy feel to it. I guess it means the menu will be basically the same as you'll find in other Vintage Inn pubs. Then again, it also means that you'll probably be able to get occasional discounts through things like the Gourmet Society and so on. I didn't stay for food on this occasion but I did stay long enough to notice that they have a decent selection of beers available (including Black Sheep, which I always miss when I'm not in Yorkshire). The pub is pretty dog friendly too - they're allowed in the bar area but not the restaurant, which seems pretty fair. Service was friendly and efficient and a few regulars were chatting with bar staff when we arrived, I guess because they weren't super busy. Next time I'm wandering around Roundhay Park or Tropical world and find myself in need of refreshments the Roundhay Fox will be the obvious choice.

We were quickly seated in a corner of the pub and I instantly started reading the menu as I was feeling paricularly peckish on that day. I ordered myself a Coke, because I can and my preferred 'Coke' with the braised lamb shoulder, mash, green beans and a flavoursome red wine, root vegetable & pearl barley sauce. The lamb was well cooked, soft, tasty, meaty, coming straight off the bone! It's companions didn't last long, and the sauce had good flavour. I opted for the main and dessert combination, and chose their own dairy ice cream (you can't go wrong with ice cream after a main!), and had 2 scoops choc and 1 scoop vanilla. Some people might call me crazy for having ice cream in this weather, but I brushed them comments aside, and stuck to my guns. Good ice cream is always a winner. Oh, and the service was good and the staff were friendly. Bonus. So the all important, price is next now. I don't eat out often, but when I do, I like to treat myself, and it came out to £20-£21 (the lamb being the main culprit £15-ish), so it was reasonable and I enjoyed myself. Money well spent! This is a very, very local village pub. There's usually one or two dogs running around and it's not always clear who owns them. None of this should put you off. Sure, when you first wander in everyone will stop talking and stare at you, but this is mostly because you're new and exciting, not because you're new and unwelcome. It won't be long before they're chatting to you as if you were an old friend. There are two small rooms: one at the back that contains a pool table and a juke box and one at the back that has a real fireplace. the bar doesn't have the world's hugest selection but they manage a couple of nice real ales, as well as a few wines and ciders and all the spirits you'd normally expect. There's no kitchen but they sell crisps and nuts and occasionally the bar man puts on some free snacks. The pub quiz is on Sundays and is free to enter but is normally followed by a few more games which they ask you to chip in £1 to play. It's a lot of fun, quite tricky and well-attended to say this pub is in such a small village.
