Dear N Train: On weekends, you are my only option. So yeah, I'm a captivated audience. But that doesn't mean you should take advantage of me. Please, come more than once every 30 minutes. I don't care if I have a new automated train, as long as something comes. And why oh why do you let 2 Qs and 2 Rs come before you even think about showing up? Don't you know I really want to get out of Times Square ASAP? You're good to me in rush hour, but that's about it. Be nice more often. Seriously, I'm starting to like the G train better than you. THE G TRAIN! Shape up. Love, Josh read more

I like the N train. It goes from Canal all the way to Atlantic/Pacific without stopping. Except for when there's "train traffic" or is being "held by the dispatcher". WHATEVER I'm impatient, and I like traveling long distances in short amounts of time. Thank you N train, thank you, for being the superior train of the N/Q/R/W family. I wish I lived somewhere that you were my main man. I will consider it when my lease runs out. read more

Torture On The N Train. A Conversation Between Me and Myself: "Haha suckers! I get on at Ditmars so I can sit anywhere I like and nap all the way to work!" "But you're a healthy young man! On a list of people who should be sitting, you're second to last in line, only behind people without bendable knees." "Aww. But I really want to. Don't I deserve it for being the farthest stop?" "Fine. But only if you promise to get up right away for old people and pregnant ladies." "Deal. But how about that lady? She could be pregnant, but she could just be fat. I don't want to get up because she thinks I think she's pregnant, but really she just needs to stop eating entire sleeves of Chips Ahoy, and now I'm going ruin her self-esteem for the day, and she's going to go buy more Chips Ahoy. And also, is that guy old enough? He's still dressed up to go to work, but he's pretty frail lookin. Do old people like getting seats because they are old? And what about that mom with the stroller. She's healthy, but she's got a stroller. Do I get up???" "Holy crap! Just stand up nonchalantly and lean against the door if that's the only thing that will shut your neurotic little pie hole up!" "Good idea. ...but do I step off the train to let people out? Or do I squeeze to the side? Do people care? Am I blocking the door? And how come no one sat down at that seat I just vacated?" "...I hate you..." "Oh wait. We're at Queensboro Plaza. There's the 7 train across the tracks! Let's give it the finger because the N is still so awesome!" "Yesssssssssssssssssss" read more

Dearest N Train, Oh N Train you are reliable and a golden ride to my favorite place I love to call home...Long Island City, Queens. When the new versions of you came into town and each car had AC I was thrilled. You had changed so much and grown vertically and horizontally and picked up some of the coolest people I have never seen traveling from Flushing and serving the good people from Astoria through Manhattan to Brooklyn. You are a loyal servant and I do not have any gripes about you friend. When R and W come I am not as happy, becuase when I see you I think home...I think Queens aka "The World"...I think LOVE... I love you N train don't ever stop being you and taking me to the city and other wonderful places...Bless you Peace and Blessings, Jordan "The Green Thumber" T read more

Haven't been on the N so much but when you need to get back from Bay Ridge and points nearby, it's a great time saver. Also gets you to Astoria effectively enough. read more

Oh N train... Express, really? Why does it still take me so long to get to work in the morning? Because... you. never. come. Also an express train should skip a stop from time to time. There are a whole ton of skippable stops in between where I love and where I work. Like all of em. read more

I feel like I'm cheating on the D train every time I catch you on the transfer at Atlantic Ave, but damn it, you do the job and you do it well. Can the R train be like you? read more

Living in Queens most of my life moving to Astoria was the best decision I ever made. I no longer have to take shady buses or deal with a smelly/dirty 7 train. The N train is on time about 90% of the time and during rush hour there is always a train coming. It's safe so there's nothing to worry about at night and the MTA has replaced all the old train cars for the new ones. Couldn't ask for more. Not to mention the view of midtown from Queens is pretty awesome. Not to mention I can transfer to ANY line by the time I reach 34st. The only downside is when you are walking beneath the train it makes a ton of noise. More so than the 7 train but I also believe the 7 train tracks are higher than the N/Q train. read more

My god is this train slow. It literally crawls to each Queens stop. What is the deal with the door situation at Ditmars? They close all the doors except for half a one at each car. And if it's a matter of conserving heat in the winter/AC in the summer, despite the fact they do it year round, why the hell don't they close the doors when the train is parked at Astoria Blvd. for 10 minutes before pulling into Ditmars where I'm usually sweating or shivering? Try to avoid around 2:30-3:30pm on weekdays during the school year at the Astoria end unless you enjoy obnoxious, loud, rowdy St. John's kids who think the train car is their own personal living room. But I can't hate, it still takes me where I need to go. Plus I still like the spiffy not-so-new-anymore cars. read more

The N train is my main train. I take it almost everyday. For me, it's great. There are only 5 stops in Queens and getting into Manhattan is a snap. And the train goes to many of the main neighborhoods in Manhattan: 5th Ave/Central Park (southern side), midtown, Times Square, Herald Square, Chelsea, the Village, Soho, Chinatown/Little Italy and downtown. The train cars are relatively new, and I've rarely been on an N train with no A/C during the summer. They are pretty clean and well-maintained. As a Queens native, I'd give the N train 4 or 5 stars. Brooklynites, however, would have a different opinion, and that opinion would be, unfortunately, well deserved. I once was meeting friends in Brooklyn, and I noticed that the N train went to the neighborhood. I thought, "Perfect!!! I won't have to change trains!!" Once I got into Brooklyn, fast and convenient turned into excruciatingly slow. When I finally got out of the train station in Brooklyn, I discovered 3 "Joe, where are you?" voicemails on my cell phone. Also, whenever I read about weekend track changes due to track work, it's almost always in Brooklyn. So, I understand when my friends in Brooklyn complain about the N train. Yes, the N train goes to Coney Island (last stop in Brooklyn), and I have taken it from one end to the other. It is much quicker to drive on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (Expressway??? Yeah, right!!!) and Ocean Parkway than to take the N train. If you plan to take the N train to Coney Island, allow for a long train ride. So, while the N train is great in Queens & Manhattan, I have to knock my review to 3 stars. read more

Some of my nicknames for the N train: "Never" "Not Stopping At Dekalb" (this is really more of a pneumonic device, because all the other yellow line trains stop at Dekalb, and I have made this mistake before and had to walk all the way home from Atlantic/Pacific) read more

Ah the "N" and The "R" - Never and Rarely. Now it's N & W. I took the N faithfully for the 2 years I lived in Astoria and commuted to Manhattan. read more

I love the N, even more than the W. The trains are clean and shiny. I love the automatic announcements and brightly lit upcoming stops. It gets crowded during rush hour, but it also has a tendency to run express. I'm a fan of trains that tend to go express when I am on them Most Ns are well maintained and clean. read more

Despite the weekly maintenance, I consider the N train the most reliable and less crowded train of all the main lines.. Weekly maintenance and skip stops at the end of the line (Astoria) are the worst on this train... at any time you can expect your train to go express and skip all local stops... read more

Listen, I know we have all had our issues with the train system in NYC. I take the N train every day back and forth to work and I have to say this review will be based on the service this train provides, not necessarily the people or events that happen on it. Located only 2 blocks from my house, it's a short walk which makes it easier on bad weather days. Then, it so happens, it is also 2 blocks from my office in the City so that's a big plus for me too. The N trains are now all the newer style trains and for the most part have been clean. Has occasionally run express which gets me to work even faster but when this happens it stops at 57th street and goes offline. Not terrible since my stop is the next one so I can walk or wait for next train. From Coney Island to 8th Ave it runs outside and also goes over the Manhattan Bridge from Pacific Street to Canal Street so it provides plenty of opportunities to use your phones if desired. Except during late nights when it runs underground local. The N train lines also seems to connect to almost every other train line in NYC so it's also very convenient and you can get to anywhere by starting on the N line. (My favorite is taking it to Queensboro Plaza and transferring across platform to the & train to Citifield, very convenient for Mets fans!!) Covering a lot of ground in NYC is a big deal and the N train does exactly that. Truthfully, after a night out of debauchery, this train gets me home! read more

Certainly one of the more cleaner trains amongst the MTA's service offerings, the N train has proven itself to be reliable, relatively fast, and a line that hits just about every major destination in midtown Manhattan. The N loses points for its abundance of rather blunt homeless people and/or beggars, as well as roving bands of mariachi musicians and other assorted musical money grubbers. The train loses points for the little game it plays at 34th Street when it shows up at the same time as the Q, and makes us play subway "Coke and Pepsi," running from one train to another in anticipation of which one will end up leaving first. However, I do consider myself lucky to have this as my commuting line. It's 30 minutes for me door to door from home in Astoria to work in the Flatiron. read more

Dear N Train, I must say that I relied on you for quite some time and seldom still do. You are my transport pod to different cultures.....When I was a teenager, I used to rely on you to go hang out in Astoria in the Greek neighborhoods. Whenever the sun would shine bright on NYC, I took your train there, and enjoyed the views of the neighborhoods, the food, the clubs(Krash), and some other "meetings"...lol Fond memories of Astoria.....Then, as I make my way home, you drop me off in Manhattan, which of course, being the melting pot that it is, has as many cultures as you can think of.... Then, at times, in more familiar terms, I would go with my family to Chinatown and Little Italy(which my mom and brother LOVE), and allowed to travel to a far away place full of magic, wonder, and the most amazing Asian food there is..... But you do, and have always, been a bit of a delay bunny, and I have waited for you more than I care for...At times, I thought u would run more frequently, but didn't. There were times when the weather was bad and needed shelter, and you weren't there..... And your sister train, the "R", doesn't fare too well either..... I give you four stars for the memories you helped me create, but take two back for your delays. Please, come more often.!!!! read more

Besides the 7, I take the N on certain days during weekdays and weekends. on weekends, N is my main transport to Brooklyn and it can be stressful if MTA decided to do weekend work in BK. You know, the "N is running on the D line both ways" so it does not stop at my stop. And if that is not enough, be careful when you board the N late at night at Queensboro plaza. When the train came to the platform, it said "N to Coney Island". As soon as I stepped inside the car, the announcement changed " listen to the train crew for more information" and it changed all of a sudden to Q. What sucks was: I could not get out as they already shut the door. And yes, why is there no announcement for N at Queensboro plaza and most of the stations in Brooklyn?! And why is it always takes FOREVER for the N to approach Queensboro plaza at certain times. Once I had to wait like 18 mins and five 7 trains passed by it literally transformed the platform into a mecca of people. But yeah thanks to N it is a lifesaver if you want to go to Manhattan cause of the 7 weekend work that always occur (i mean it, always) during winter time. read more

i keep reading about the bed bugs on this train in the news. it freaks me out. i HATE that i MUST take this train. does it run ok? yes. is it on time? MOSTLY. are there are not lots of homeless people using this train as their bed-always a plus. that's why I gave it there stars. it probably deserves 4, but because of the bed bug scare, it loses one star. read more

The N Train - Public Transportation Near Me

I'm originally from Jamaica, Queens. This train is gold compared to the E/F train I used to take. Delays are much less. Sick passengers are non existent because the train stops are frequent. The trains are usually new. It's packed during rush hour but leave a little bit earlier and you're fine. The train is outdoor in queens which is nice so you can have internet connection :) read more

The Pros: Clean, some newer trains... normal riders (minus the perv. in the news right now)... I always feel safe riding to Astoria at 2am. The Cons: SLOW... after rush hour it slowwwsss down soooooo much and on the weekends there's ALWAYS "work" being done on the tracks." Arghhh... then I have to take the 7 train aka smelly/annoying train/ Road to nowhere train. The N Train was great 2 years ago... now it is rather poor. read more

Pretty good train. It runs through pretty decent areas like Astoria (my brother lives there and takes it frequently). It runs through pretty good areas in Manhattan as well (ex: Time Square, Madison Sq Park, Union Sq.) It runs though Barclays Center (Atlantic AV) and through nice parts of Brooklyn like 36th street. Then it goes to Coney Island. It is express in Brooklyn (from Atlantic/Barclays to 36th street, then makes all stops on its own line to Coney Island). It used to be express in Manhattan as well, but several years ago (2009 or 2010 I believe), MTA removed many lines (both subways, trains like the railroad, buses), and one of these many lines was the W. So now it runs local along with the R. And the Q runs to Astoria (some begin/end at 57th street-7th AV, which skip 49th street), these trains stop at 49th. So in conclusion, the N is one of the nicer MTA subways. This is a train you want to be a regular on. read more

you're one of those unhealthy relationships. i know you're not good for me... i know that you've done me wrong.... the benefits of having you near is always cherished. you satisfy me when i depend on you for the most part. you also abuse my love for you and that's not right. we fight constantly about who's early/late at the station. i like how you whisk me away to the city by going express. i see so many beautiful people in you. without you in my life... i'd be so lost and late to work. will you STOP going local on the weeknights and weekends? i really loathe you for that! you're my entity, N Train. read more

I am trying this new thing where I am trying to be a more positive person and you are making this very, very, VERY difficult, N train at 8:30 am!!!! Last Thursday you just... didn't show up. Never came. The street outside looked like a freaking mosh pit. I had to walk across the QB bridge to get to my damn office in arctic temperatures. Then yesterday everyone literally waited 25 minutes to get on a train. And same thing today.. something was broken. I am just so over it... it's not like this is a free service that the city provides, we are paying out the ass for this bullshit. There needs to be more trains. I don't want to stand for a half an hour pushed up against some hygienically-challenged sexual predator. We should be able to sit. I am just over this! I guess I'm doing a pretty horseshit job on this whole "staying positive" thing... read more

N train is awesome! If you live in Astoria, you can get to midtown in 20 minutes! OR Transfer at 59th/Lexington and get on the 6 to be in LES in 15 minutes! Yeaa.. sometimes there are delays, but when everything is running right - TIME got nothin' on me! ! read more

say what you will about the N train, but as far as subways go, it's one of the better ones. almost exclusively new, cleanish cars with plenty of seating as well as plenty of rails to hold onto in case you don't find a seat. i'm hard-pressed to find a train that covers as much ground, particularly when it comes to places i need/want to go - i rarely find myself walking more than 5-10 minutes to or from the N train regardless of where i end up, and even if i'm not near one, i'm near a train that connects. bonus points for a good portion of the ride being above-ground, because let's face it, the best source of entertainment on a crowded train is a smartphone, and the internet is a lot more fun than reading books, even if they are on a kindle. The train that all other trains should aspire to be like. It clearly depicts the next stop and how many stops there are to go, the seats are all flush with the wall allowing for more standing room. And as far as cleanliness and trains go, you'd be hard pressed to find a cleaner line. read more

Eh, it could be worse. I live by Astoria Boulevard stop, which constantly has me finding myself lucky because I don't have to deal with the crazy track repairs and I am on one of the express stops. Service is comparable to the rest of the lines, with the exception of the 6. Definitely slow in the rain or snow. There are homeless, there are crazies and there are creeps, but it is New York, so it's to be expected. Overall, one of the cleanest and homeless/crazy/creepy-free lines, in my opinion. read more

What the usually innocuous, plodding N train is famous for (at least in my mind, at least this year) are two traits happening now more so than ever before: 1) Because the N tracks are constantly undergoing repair, there are always train workers somewhere on the rails. What does this mean to you and I? Should signify nothing, except that when we're standing on an underground platform and an N train trundles by--say, on the opposite track--the driver does the worst, most heinous, most evil fecking act imaginable--he SOUNDS THE TRAIN'S AIR-HORN. Ka-BLAMMM!!!! Ka-BLAMM!!! Ka-BLAMMM!!!! For the safety of track workers, naturally. But it is inhumanly, insanely ear-splitting. Comes out of NOWHERE. How is this legal? How is this not outlawed? An air-horn like you might find on a cargo freighter, being tooted...underground? In a tunnel? Can you even comprehend what this does to your eardrums? My friends, if your cerebellum has never been treated to this auditory blast, you may count yourself fortunate. Holy fecking God. It is loud enough to make you soil your underwear on your commute to work. 2) Is the recession getting worse? Because what is up lately--with almost every ride on the N train--commuters have to stand cheek-by-jowl with little old Asian ladies wheeling gargantuan plastic sacks filled with crumpled aluminum cans they've trash-picked out of sidewalk garbage heaps. Enormous rolling hauls of metal cans, 6' high and 4' in diameter. How many cans are in there? 500? 600? 700 soda cans? 4, 5, 6 full plastic contractor's bags stretched to bursting with 'em; the size of a baby elephant, all lashed together onto a flimsy metal laundry cart. These rolling juggernauts take up the whole 'end section' of a train car, enough room for 8 people to ride. Why does the MTA allow these trash-collectors --hauling dripping, bug-infested garbage--on commuter trains? This is what the N train is to me lately. Just to give you an idea. Otherwise its one of the more decent city trains. read more

Not too ghetto between Queens and Manhattan, don't ever take it into Brooklyn so can't rate that part of the trip. I really hate when it comes to a dead stop underneath the East River between the Lexington/59th St. Station and Queensboro Plaza. Brings the anxiety right out of me. Negative 10 stars for that as I don't know why their queue would be so off to where they have to stop or coast under the river. read more

I'm a big fan of the Broadway line, and the N train does not disappoint. It is reliable and runs frequently. I'm a little sad that the N runs local through Manhattan nowadays, but glad that I can still catch it at the express track at the Canal St. station. read more

I like riding on the N train. They have the newer subway cars and some of the operators will hold the train in the station if you're rushing to get on. Like with all other subway cars, you have your fair share of homeless people. I like the new design of the caras because it can hold more people and they have the subway stops listed electronically. Usually they are right, if not, the operator usually lets you know over the loud speaker. Only one thing to remember is that on the weekends, you can't take Q to Astoria Blvd, you have to take the N. The Q stops at 57th street. Overall it is a great subway line that I highly recommend living near its' stops. read more
