Disclosure: I attended this as a blogger, and received 2 free tickets for attending. I had never been to a murder-mystery dinner before, although a friend hosted a murder-mystery party a while back, and I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. When you arrive - and you should arrive 20-30 minutes prior, as the line is long - you are checked in and you also get your picture taken. Everyone is already in-character at this point, which was funny. You're then escorted to a table - there are ten seats at each table, and I noticed that some people knew their entire group, whereas others did not. We didn't know the other 8 people at our table but we soon became friends, as you have to work together to figure out the culprit. I could see this being even more fun if you knew everyone at your table, too - it would be a great date night or girls night out. Before the murder-mystery part begins, you're served dinner, and it's buffet-style - when you book your ticket, you have to choose if you want a chicken dinner or a pasta dinner, so I assumed it would be a plated dinner (ie, dinner served to you). The chicken and also the potatoes were very good, the pasta was just okay. Water is complimentary, soft drinks are $1 at the bar and there are alcoholic drinks available too (cash bar). There is waitservice as well, which mostly consisted of clearing the tables and bringing fresh water. The murder-mystery part of the evening was highly entertaining, the actors were great. In between each "scene," we were allowed to walk around asking the actors questions, too. One thing I didn't mention is that a few guests are randomly chosen to be suspects, and so they get to be thrown into acting parts as well - I was glad I wasn't one of the ones chosen, ha, but the girl at our table who was chosen seemed to enjoy it. I think tickets are $60 usually but I know you can get half-price tickets by signing up for their email list on their website, so then it would only be $30. IMO, $60 is a lot for what the evening consisted of, but $30 is reasonable. There are signs on the tables that say that tips are expected, too, for the waiters/waitresses. Eastpointe Manor has plenty of parking in back, as well. I'll be trying the Livonia location's murder-mystery event (at Burton Manor) in the coming months too, for my blog. I was excited to try the murder mystery dinner. I went solo to see if it was something that I would have a girls night for. When I arrived everybody was in character which was pretty cool. The show started a little late, but it was packed so time was needed for everything to get in order. Some people were pick to be characters in the murder mystery. The whole show was a bit confusing as rules and how the game goes weren't really spelled out clearly. I gave up trying to figure out "who did it" and just watched. The dinner was okay and the service was good. My first visit was with a deal voucher so I didn't pay the $60 normal price. I was have been upset if I paid $60. They also offer pictures that you can buy (they have you take a themed picture in the beginning), but they are priced fairly high. The best part for most people: CASH BAR. Good concept, just needs some work. First visit would be a prep to getting the game for the next time. read more

I got an email for a murder mystery dinner. I did more research and read about it, but I wanted something that was more interactive and fun. Luckily, they do house calls! They do private parties! The process to book the event was super easy. I went on the website and gave them a call. I was able to book a private party for 20 people or less. We were assigned 1 actor. I filled out a survey that helped them prepare for our event. I read through the different mysteries and picked the 80s murder mystery case. I was surprising my fiancé with this for his 80s birthday party. All of his friends and family dressed up in 80s outfits. The actor was on time, professional, and he was super fun! He was patient and was willing to work with our guests! All of our guest had an awesome time! The actor was super responsive. We all had an awesome time! The props, books, and pens were all organized. Everything flowed and he was a great facilitator. I highly recommend! It's such a fun idea and event for parties. I wanted a birthday party that wasn't the usual evening so I hired Murder Mystery, they were so polite and professional on every phone call, follow up, email and the day of actress calling me to review day of details. We had an actress (Ann Marie) come out and do the murder mystery masquerade. Wow!!! This was sooo much fun and entertaining! She arrived on time, was fun and energetic amd was in character from start to finish! All my guests had a wonderful time and it was a celebration to remember! My husband and I had a wonderful date! My husband and I bought this as a group on deal and we had so much fun. The cast is so interactive with the audience and they keep you guessing. I have food allergies and they could not accommodate gluten-free or vegan because I'm allergic to dairy and egg but I was didn't mind a bit because it was so entertaining. We just purchased our second group on deal to go again and we will probably do it a third time was a group of friends. I would recommend this for anyone wanting A fun interactive date. Where do I start!? Never have I EVER experienced a more unprofessional organization. My associate began working/planning an event with the 'reputable' Detroit Murder Mystery Company nearly four months prior to it taking place. Then, the day before, she receives an EMAIL at 5PM stating they have canceled due to the weather. Really!? Are you kidding me!? First of all, canceling the day before is completely unheard of, but to do it over email at the end of the day is the worst case scenario. We didn't even have a chance to find another company! And the customer service is a complete joke. Of course we called after getting that generic cancellation email, but all we got was, "would you like to reschedule or a full refund?". Is that a serious question!? Would I like to reschedule!? You cancel the day before our event that we've planned for months, and you're asking if we want to reschedule? Give us the refund!!! Save yourself the embarrassment & disappointment and DO NOT BOOK THIS GARBAGE COMPANY FOR YOUR COMPANY EVENT OR PARTY!!!! read more

I'm sorry to say that I was not at ALL impressed with this event. First, it was very disorganized. We arrived 20 minutes early for our seating and waited in line for 45 minutes to get in. There were people at our table that arrived right at the start time and still waited 45 minutes to get in. On to the food.... the buffet was marginal at best. Typical "hall" food. You were asked for your menu option when ordering the tickets, but everyone got the same pasta and dry chicken from the buffet. The performance was comical because of the poor quality. Definitely an armature performance at best. I do not typically write reviews on events or places that I go, but this was such a disappointment. Not a fun evening. My husband I attended at Burton Manor in Livonia. My food was burned. I assumed everybody's tasted that bad, but at one point my husband stole a bite off my plate and assured me his had tasted nowhere near as bad. By the time I looked at the cost of my GroupOn, the cost of the cash bar, and tipping the wait staff...we could have had a wonderful evening out elsewhere. The entertainment was hokey at best. My review is for Best Laid Plans - Eastpointe Manor What a fun night out! I'd never been to a murder mystery dinner and I had no idea what to expect. So glad we went! When we arrived we had our pictures taken, then were escorted to our table. We went with a group of 8, tables seat 10 so we ended up sitting with one couple we didn't know. No worries - they were fabulous! The entire table works together gathering clues and questioning suspects. This is a very interactive dinner so it helps if you're outgoing and don't have trouble talking with strangers. One person from each table is designated a suspect by the cast members. They get a name tag, funny hat, and a binder that lists their background, activities, etc. This information is used throughout the show so if you're a suspect you're going to want to spend some time looking at it. The murderer can be anyone with a name tag, not just the cast (who are also wearing name tags) The show we saw was set in the 1930s. A beautiful starlet named Ms Peacock is found murdered in her office. Whodunit??? The character names are funny. .Warren Piece, Sleazy McQueen, Busty LaRoux, Oola . .La!. you have to say it with a pause in between or she gets upset :-) The actors were amazing - I can't imagine how hard it must be to do this type of improv when the guests aren't doing their parts properly. There were a few times that the audience members went out on their own with answers or theories and the cast very neatly got them back to where they needed to be. It was about 2.5 hours long with dinner and dessert served while the investigations were going on. There are two investigation sessions where you question the suspects - you have fake money in case they need to be bribed! There's also a handy guide to 1930's slang! So have some bathtub gin, get gussied up, grab yer tomato and go to the show! You'll have a swell time! read more

They have public and private shows, but the public venue for the Detroit area is in Eastpointe. There are often deals on Groupon for public shows which are cheaper than on the company website. You come in and are checked in and then you take a "crime scene" photo which you can purchase to take home with you. Then someone takes you to your seat, where you will be seated with other audience members who are your "teammates" to solve the crime. An actor comes by and picks a person at your table to be a "suspect", and you can all read their secret information to help you solve the crime. Everyone gets up to eat. It's a buffet line with chicken, noodles, potatoes, and green beans. The noodles and potatoes are delicious! There is also a cash bar. Then you sit down to watch the show which is made up of three short acts with periods in between where you go and question all of the suspects. You take notes on everything that you find out about all the characters and then narrow down based on who has the most motive and opportunity to determine who the murderer is. They give awards for first and last place, as well as best actor and best actress for those playing suspects. Overall, it is very interactive and a fun idea for a date night or girl's night out. read more

An all-around disappointing experience. When we arrived, we were told - along with four other people - that the company had overbooked their "gold circle" seating and, as a result, we would have to sit wherever they could stick us, even though the gold circle seating (which you pay $15 per person for) is supposed to guarantee you a seat up front for the performance. Instead, we were stuck by the back door. Awesome. Just what I had in mind for my friend's 30th birthday celebration. I insisted that they issue a refund to all six people, and they did, but to add insult to injury, the guy who called to let me know that my refund was coming said the reason we didn't get our seats was because we arrived late - not true, and definitely not what we were told the night of the show. Other than that, the venue does not have enough parking, there was a super long line to get in, and the food was bland. The show itself was pretty entertaining, and the actors are great, but it was hard to enjoy it with such crappy seats. read more

I had a Private show for my Wedding Shower and all of the guests absolutely loved it! The theme I chose was 'Till Death Do Us Part', it had the guest cracking up the whole time. The actors make it very easy to follow along and keep everyone entertained. They do all party sizes and use 1-3 actors according to the number of guests. I would highly recommend this for anyone throwing a party and looking for something different! I also can't wait to try the Public shows one day as I heard those are just as good! read more

I wanted something different than just going out to eat, to the movies, or to the comedy club, so I bought Living Social and Groupon vouchers for this. I'm glad I did. I was hesitant at first once things were starting up, but that quickly changed. It was a VERY FUN time! (for all ages. I brought my parents who are in their late 40s/early 50s, and then my friend and myself mid/late 20s.) I'll be sure to attend more shows in the future. (They have different themes. This was the "Wild West theme").... The actors/actresses did a great job, which was impressive; much fun. The person who reviewed before me must have been too dumb to figure out who the killer was, and now they're mad because his/her team didn't win. I've always wanted to do a murder mystery so when I saw a Groupon for this one, I jumped on it! And I must say, I was NOT disappointed! When you arrive, you get your photo taken with whomever you came with and can buy them at the end of the show. You're taken to a table by one of the characters (the staff stays in character the entire time, which is pretty fun). It's a family-style seating arrangement, so you'll sit with people you don't know if you don't have a group of 8-10. That was one of my favorite parts! Sparking up conversations with people we didn't even know and working together to solve the mystery! The whole experience was fun, light-hearted, and exciting! My date was chosen as a character (one of the people who COULD have been the murderer) and everyone at the table has their roles to play as detectives. I thoroughly enjoyed working together and piecing together different clues with my table as well as forming alliances or rivalries with other table groups. The dinner was pretty good, from what I remember (I went in December 2012). And there was a cash bar, which was nice. The only thing I wish I would have known to dress up beforehand. That would have made me feel more at-home in the 1920s-30s setting! read more

It starts out real well. They take your pictures we had to wait outside to get in until almost show starting time. The food was good. I was very disappointment in the set up they had, I would not return. The suspects are all in a circle in the room you cannot see them and you cannot hear them. We had no idea what was going on. Our whole table was dissatisfied. You need to set a stage so people can see who you're talking about and you need microphones. The magician didn't put the microphone by people when they were speaking so we had no idea what was going on. None of our table will be returning. Pooor sound. Cannot see suspects. We attended the Gratiot Ave. show in Detroit on 1-20th. The food was excellent and the people at our table were very friendly. However, the entertainment was not well organized. We could not hear the actors give their clues because they didn't speak clearly or loudly. Therefore, we missed all the clues which didn't make it fun at all. We asked them to speak up, but they didn't. What they said should have been written down for all to read and then people could refer to them later. We didn't enjoy getting up to ask the actors questions because by the time we waited in line to talk to them, time was up and we had to sit back down. (No one told us how much time we had) We have played 3 of the Murder Mystery games that you can get from Toys R Us and had a blast. So we were looking forward to this night, but the game part was a huge disappointment. read more

The show, itself, was a lot of fun. The actors were good and got the crowd to get involved. A lot of laughs were had. As to the food service, though, it was not so good. We received a salad immediately and then we waited for the rest. The bread was served an then our meal wasn't served for quite a while afterwards. The dishes weren't picked up and the table was left a mess. My husband didn't want to tip the wait staff but I still left one for them. I think if we could have enjoyed our meal as we were figuring out who done it, it would have made for a more enjoyable evening. BUT the show, itself, was grand. read more

Do Not Waste Your Time or Money! The first thing you need to know is, and this was confirmed by the wait staff, this is an all new cast with an all new show so all those 4 and 5 star reviews you are reading do not apply! I don't know where to begin...the main "actor" was reading the script from crumpled up pieces of paper, everything seemed extremely unrehearsed, there was no flow to the show, most of it was made up of audience members who were asked to read "clues" from black binders (which was not engaging at all because it was hard to hear them and they ARE NOT ACTORS), nobody could follow the plot (if there was one), and it was just a very poor production. I would not recommend this to anyone nor will I ever be returning. read more

My husband and I were very excited to attend. We purchased a Groupon and called to make the reservation for the February 2, 2018 show. I was sent a confirmation email. We arrived to the event and had to wait outside! It was 16°! There were others inside and the door was propped for those of us at the rear of the line. There was absolutely no direction or organization for the line. People just filled the hallway and formed lines, themselves. Once let inside the banquet room, we were told that we needed a 3 digit code to get in. We were told to call an 888# and someone would give it to us. We called 14 times, literally and had to leave voicemails. Finally getting a return call 30 minites later, they had trouble finding us a seat, as they were all filled. Eveyone had eaten, so we ate what was remaining! Folks at our table were eating dessert. We had to flag down a waiter, who was cleaning off tables, to ask for ice cream. He didnt seem to like being stopped. Then the actual show, it was amateur, at best. It was disorganized and just boring. It seemed very impromptu and not well thought out. The costumes were Dollar Tree grade. It honestly was just a poor, disappointing experience. I wanted to love it, but it was bad from start to finish. read more

Me and a group of friends (8 in total) went to celebrate my birthday. We had fun because we were together and got to enjoy the company of each other, but the show was just okay. It's longer than necessary and please do not come hungry because we had to wait almost an hour and a half before we could eat (The food was great though). It was supposed to start at 7pm but the show didn't actually get started until about 7:45. We all received the Groupon price of $28 which was great, but I definitely would not pay the full price of $60. We attended 1/7/17 at Burton Manor in Livonia. While it was fun to dress up and play along, it was just an okay night. Entertaining, but not worth the $60/person. To solve the mystery there aren't puzzles or things to work at as team with just your table; you have to get up and walk around and question others, which was very disorganized. Plus, I was with my mom who isn't very mobile so she couldn't participate in that way, which took some fun out of it for both of us. My biggest compliant is for the cost I expected a much better meal. The "5-oz tenderloin" option was about 2.5 oz of tenderloin (roast beef?), rice and veggies. It was entertaining and the dress up part was fun, but the food was horrible and the actors could have been better. They advertise one of the food choices as a 5oz prime rib meal with zip sauce. We were all looking forward to it! It was roast beef with gravy on top and not even 5 oz. I purchased as a Christmas present for my grandmother and I feel bad the meal was not good. Recently hired this company for a surprise birthday party for my wife. Given the informal setting where the party was held, they managed the space very well & made sure all guests (who by the way had no idea how this game was going to work) were involved. Every single guest (youngest being a 10 year old boy) enjoyed the event and I am sure if there is an appropriate opportunity again, i will consider using them. read more
