10/10 experience w the moving general! Great move super easy and reasonabley priced would 100% recommend

If you cherish your furniture, don't hire them,n they damaged my grandkids 55 inch tv, my 65 inch tv, they scratched up my furniture,n they caused a loveseat to be taken by NYCHA, when they was suppose to take back to other apt. Ryan I guess who is the owner is a devil in disguise and the the minions who work for him can't assemble furniture back to save their lives. And they are a bunch of thief's. They stole tools I had under my window sill to remove the child proof bars. And what moving company do you know comes to move 3brooms of furniture with a pick up truck and job was suppose to start @ 9 and they don't get to location until 10:45-10:50. One of the workers broke a leg off my adjustable bed and when I called about, I was told Ryan would call me back and never did. Horrible customer service. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. Horrific experience with The Moving General. On November 3rd, I moved out of my childhood home -- a deeply emotional and difficult day to begin with. I had a lifetime of belongings to move, including items that had belonged to my late parents. After doing my research, I chose The Moving General based on their strong Google reviews (4.9 stars) and the fact that they're a Staten Island company. I spoke with Ryan, the owner, who came across as very professional. He personally came to my home for an estimate, assured me that everything would be wrapped carefully, and that he would have five movers, including himself, along with a 20-foot truck. He also secured a 10x15 storage unit and a 10x5 lock, saying it would be more than enough space. That professionalism ended the moment moving day arrived. The crew was hours late -- only one mover showed up an hour late, and Ryan and two others didn't arrive until two hours past the scheduled time. The truck they brought was not the promised 20-footer but a 15-foot U-Haul van, completely inadequate for the amount of furniture and boxes I had. What unfolded was a nightmare. The move dragged on for 19 exhausting hours over two days. Everything that was promised and discussed before the move went out the window. My belongings were tossed carelessly into the storage unit with no organization or care. It became immediately clear that Ryan's estimate of space was grossly inaccurate -- I had to rent another 10x15 unit the next day just to fit the rest of my things. Ryan refused to take responsibility for his miscalculation. Worse yet, during the move, the crew reeked of marijuana, and Ryan himself appeared to be under the influence -- his pupils were dilated, his behavior erratic, and his language completely unprofessional. At one point, he even threatened not to unload the truck unless we paid him in full, despite the job being nowhere near complete. We were stuck -- too financially and logistically committed to back out -- so we had no choice but to let them continue. By the end of day two, we were forced to leave behind or throw away items, including a beautiful off-white couch, simply because there wasn't enough room. To say the experience was traumatic is an understatement. I'll take responsibility for my own mistakes -- I should have insisted on getting everything in writing (truck size, number of movers, wrapping policy) and paid by credit card. But that doesn't excuse the unprofessional, dishonest, and reckless behavior of this company. If you value your belongings, your sanity, and your wallet, stay far, far away from The Moving General and Ryan. I wouldn't wish this experience on anyone. read more

My unckle and I hired this company to move heavy furniture from the upstairs level of our home to the bottom level ,two floors down.they were able to successfully move a heavy amorie that we had in our bedroom for over a decade now. When it was deliverd it took 4 strong men to lug this piece upstairs. We called The Moving General and they were able to send us a crew of men over, to handle this for us. Not to mention the same day we called. Due to the high quality of the service, it was certainly worth every penny. Thank you Chris and Ryan for doing a wonderful job. I'd give -5 Stars if I could. Horrible service. Ryan seems like a very nice guy but he did not deliver. He should have put a 16-ft truck for a three bedroom living room dining room and kitchenette set. He left literally half of my furniture at the house but "promised" he was going to come back and get the other furniture for another $2,000!!!. The two kids he bought to move my stuff or high on weed.. didn't know how to handle the furniture.. didn't wrap any of the glass work or furniture. Scratched up the furniture. He'll tell you that it was because we had 20 extra boxes. That is pure b*******. Even with 20 extra boxes he didn't have enough to move the basic items of a five room house. The kid movies he bought were extremely disrespectful cursing in my house in front of my wife and my 14-year-old daughter like sailors. ​​​​They walked all over our lawn , mulch bushes we had fixed up by a landscaper. It was almost like a bad comedy show. Trust me do not use this moving service. I think it might be a scam. They did have to work so I paid them half the amount agreed on. P.S. Though Ryan left a comment on 8/18/24, he pleaded and begged for redemption on 8/19/24 and then halfassed the job for $200 while damaging my items and losing some of stuff. Wooden furniture, leather recliners, $500+ monitor, $15 tape dispenser, and I honestly wouldn't be surprised anything was taken from my drawers or TV stand by them Illegal Moving Company that is unlicensed with the USDOT, NYSDOT, or FMCSA. The Moving General is an unlicensed moving company. As you can see from the photos, they are not registered under USDOT for out-of-state(Interstate) or In-State(interstate) moves. This coming officially from NYS DOT. Looking up the business myself under state with FMCSA & searching by business, the company doesn't show as registered in Staten Island, NY nor was the NYSDOT able to discover this company after providing the owners name, business, address, phone numbers, or any information. Requesting this information from the business over text & email were both ignored. Unprofessional, Uncommunicative, Disrespectful, threatens, strongarms, immature, unfinished work, failed to provide contract or receipt upon payment, 3 hours late to the job, no equipment , Damages/loses items, can't properly load a truck (Loads boxes first than bulky items which is backwards). Doesn't do research where he's dropping off (He complained about the walk to the curb to the building), and kept throwing in my face how he was helping me or telling people he was doing me a favor. The 30 year old owner, Ryan Colgan, likes to believe he is respectful at all times solely cause he says sir/maam & is incapable of taking responsibility for his actions, words, or poor work done or seeing the wrong in his ways. Everything to him is a threat, blackmail, or intimidation. He claims to be a licensed mover however with confirmation from USDOT, NYSDOT, & FMCSA; they are not licensed or registered. I hired Ryan for a job he was willing to do after I had left him what he said were "Beautiful" reviews just for him giving me a quote & customer service & he was willing to make an arrangement for me for doing so. Over the period of talks, we made 3 arrangements. The first arrangement was just to be helping hand in unloading my items for free but that was unsuccessful due to a third party. The second arrangement was for 8/17th after telling him I was going to hire 2 people to do the job for me for $200, he said he would do it for the same price & to cancel on those other people. The day of the job, between 12pm-2pm window, he cancelled the job on me cause he "underestimated the job" & wanted $550 instead. I told him no & explained not only did he cost me potential workers but ruined a relationship with a friend. I was fully upfront about it being a 1 Bedroom apartments worth of stuff & what the bulkiest of items were and the rest were boxes. After being disrespectful on the phone, I left him negative reviews replacing the positive reviews after his behavior, choice of words, and interaction. He even said "I was not a customer". I asked for him to no longer contact me. The next day, he began saying how distraught, disappointed, not upset, very upset, i ruined his night, etc cause I was damaging his business. He pleaded for the reviews to be taken down and cried about one text having "personal info" which wasn't personal info just something he was embarrassed for. He gave a half-hearted apology for his actions not from himself but from his business, not fully taking responsibility & insisted on doing this job even though I said countless times he didn't have to & I would still take down the reviews. He said he would draw up the contract, was going to bring equipment. I stated how items were packed, etc. It originally just going to be Ryan & I. The day of the job, he showed up 3 hours late, brought 1 worker the last minute (originally said 2), brought no equipment, or even use the loading ramp. I wasn't aware I couldn't ride back with him which he never communicated prior & I showed up an hour late due to uber drivers cancelling which I communicated. He made threats & attempted to strongarm me into paying him $200 more to me saying he was going to bring my stuff back if I didn't pay him for waiting. I told him no and to go ahead but he backed off. He never got all my belongings from the U-boxes, never brought my stuff to my apartment, left them in the lobby, & lost/damaged my items. He used my TV stand as a dolly which he claims I said to his employee was okay. Didn't even blanket the top & ruined the wheels. The next day I told him of the damages & he never gave insurance info. Just wanted to try and "resolve" matters and past the blame on me cause I still paid them. I didn't want any further conflict with Ryan or anxiety. He claims I never said Thank you and still complained about not getting a tip for an unfinished job. Ryan was hired to move a 10X10 "pre-wrapped" storage unit into a house. I asked if he needed to see pics. His exact words "No, I know what fits in a 10X10. He give me a price and says he needs it in cash before he starts the job. Red flag #1. He shows up late and with a van (not a box truck) that is obviously too small and complains that he's going to have to make 2 trips. Red flag #2 Then tries to make me pay more for "his" choice of vehicle. He does half the move but insists on getting more money. When I refuse and tell him he needs to finish the job for the written estimate he gave, he comes back the next day grab some hand trucks he left behind and refused to finish leaving my items without any concern for his customer. Why would anyone put their trust in this bum? He should be shut down. He doesn't care about anyone, JUST THE MONEY! He came referred through family. If he would do this to me why would anyone else trust this thief? DO NOT TRUST THIS GUY! His word is worthless. I hope I save somebody from getting burned by this guy. read more

Ryan and his team did a great job moving my stuff from Brooklyn to a storage unit in Staten Island about 2 weeks ago. They will be moving my furniture into my new home shortly. They were professional, took good care and were very careful with my belongings, wrapped everything up, dissembled my furniture neatly and packaged everything. Overall a great experience with them. What Ryan did to me was so wrong. That man steals every valuable item he can possibly find. He will end up in serious trouble. Besides stealing your stuff, he also demands a lot more money once he is at your house. He also breaks your furniture and disappears. First of all, my happiness is to write amazing reviews, and I would never ever spend my time writing a review if it wasn't to alert each one of you about the owner of this company, Ryan Colgan. Unfortunately this review is by far the worst experience I've ever had. Please, save yourself a lot of headache and stay away from Ryan Colgan and his miserable company "the moving general". My truck came completely locked from another city and my husband and I were the only ones who have the keys to open it. Unfortunately, I found Ryan and his miserable company on google. By phone he asked me the size of my trailer and told be me he was going to charge $450,00 cash to unload my trailer into my house. My trailer arrived 1 hour prior to Ryan's arrival and I opened it when Ryan and his two employees were already in my house. I looked all my boxes and everything was in there. So Ryan started looking everything and started asking what I had inside each one of my boxes, he also asked how much I paid for the house, what I do for living, how the alarm system that I have inside my house works, and then finally, he asked me if there were cameras around my house. That left me completely shocked. My husband was in a business meeting and I was alone in my house. Ryan complained ALL the time. About 2 hours later when half of my stuff were still inside my trailer, Ryan came to me with a receipt on his hands asking me to sign, which I did. Then he demanded that since I signed the receipt now I had to pay him the full amount of $450.00, even though half of my stuff were still inside my trailer. He told me it was how he worked and it was his company's policy. I refused to pay him in full, but I paid him $225,00 in cash at that moment and the remaining balance of $225.00 I paid him when the rest of my stuff were unloaded. He gave me the receipt of $450.00 paid in cash. But after that Ryan demanded extra $100.00, and I accepted as he was extremely aggressive towards me. But since our first agreement was $450.00 cash I didn't have extra money, so he accepted a check of $100. Ryan left my wall piano to come down last, of course, knowing he couldn't bring it into the house. I was shocked when he asked me if it would be a problem if he broke my piano's feet, so I immediately decided to hire a professional moving company to get my piano down. Even though our agreement of $450.00 cash was included to bring my piano down, Ryan kept the $450,00 cash and we just took back the extra $100.00 check he demanded. Of course he refused to return that check to us, but my husband sent him a message and he returned it. Folks, this is how Ryan steals you: First, he parks his truck as close as possible to your trailer, that's because it will be easier for him to carry your stuff into his car. Then he will ask you if there are cameras around your house. And that's a good time for you to call the police to take him out of your place, because Ryan will start looking everything he will steal from you. While his employees are bringing some of your stuff inside your house, Ryan is inside the trailer separating the most valuable items he's gonna to steal. When he is ready to put inside his truck all the items he spent the last 2 hours separating, that's when his two young employees will come to you and will ask you to come to the house urgent because they want to ask you something. While they keep you inside the house (in my case was about 20 minutes), the three of them are sending messages to each other. Simple as that, you'll be robbed. While the employees are talking to you inside the house and keeping you away from your trailer, Ryan steals your most expensive and valuable items. And after he put it in his car, Ryan gets out in his truck quickly and comes back about 30 minutes later pretending he had a stomachache. And just like that, you will be robbed. The other day he will call you demanding more money because "he feels like he deserves more". He stole over $6,000.00 in brand new clothes, silver sets that belonged to my grandmother, my entire brand new kitchen sets, he stole them all. I asked him to return at least what belonged to my grandmother but he refused. He shouldn't have stolen us, we trusted that man. My husband loves justice, he is an Attorney who even asked Ryan to return our stolen items without suffering any consequences, but Ryan refused. He will pay for his crime. I was hoping I wouldn't have to write this review but after almost 3 months of being jerked around and we feel lied too I have no choice. We hired The Moving General to move us in January. I thought we were doing a good thing giving a small local business a chance. On the morning of the move Ryan called to say the weather conditions weren't ideal and he needed to cancel. I agree it was icy that morning but by 10AM everything was melted. After several phone calls Ryan and his crew showed up at 1:30 with a truck not large enough to fit my belongings. This move turned into a 2 day nightmare and costing more which I understood. After loading the truck on the second day it took Ryan and his crew over 5 1/2 hours to get to my house which was 2 hours away showing up stoned and reeking of marijuana. Very unprofessional!! Due to their condition several of my items were damaged beyond repair. A 55 inch TV, a very expensive Jukebox and pieces of furniture. I know that there is always a chance of some damage in a move but not to this extent. We have been in contact with Ryan several times and been told that he will make good on this move but as of yet we have not received any compensation just excuses.
