Came here on a Friday night without a reservation. Only seating available was outdoors but it was just too hot. However, there were 3 chairs at the lower part of the bar inside so we took those. Service was very good and a manager did make a point to check on us. Food ordered was the Bang Bang Salmon bites - pretty good but very light on the sauce, Cranberry Blueberry salad with Salmon bites added - very tasty and large portion, Tofu Stir Fry which was very good (according to my friend) . The house red wine was very good at an average price. However, I ordered a Knob Creek Manhattan which was tremendously over priced! $18 + plus an upcharge for Knob Creek so it was $22 if I remember correctly. I've seen this in a few Tallahassee restaurants and can't understand how these prices are justifiable, hence the 3 star rating. Happy hour drink prices are only available Mon through Thurs. I always enjoy the brunch here. The omelettes are my favorite and do not need additonal seasoning on them unlike some other places. Our server was attentive and always came by to check on us. The ambiance and vibe is contemprary and modern, both indoors and out. The patio area is really inviting with fresh plants everywhere and they offer blankets when it's chilly. Part of Somo Walls, it is a nice addition to the Southside, close to Cascades Park. Make sure to check out the dessert menu. I visited The Monroe last month with my husband. I really wanted to love this place. The ambiance was incredible, beautifully decorated inside especially since it was during the holiday season. The appetizer salmon bites were delicious, seasoned well and flaky. For drinks I had the gimlet and my husband had an old fashion both of which were made well. The entrees missed the mark for us. I had the short rib with white rice and bok choy. The short rib was the only thing on my plate that was delicious, seasoned well and a sweet and tangy flavor, the rice was bland, and the bok choy was a bit hard. My husband said his wagyu pasta was just okay. For the price point I expected the entrees to be great. I could see this spot being more of a happy hour spot since the appetizer and drinks were good! Very disappointing experience. Visited this establishment on Saturday, 3/14 with a party of four. We arrived around 12:10 PM, were seated, and ordered a bread basket for the table. Around 12:30 PM we placed our drink and entrée orders. For the next 45 minutes we waited with no communication from our server about the status of our food. Meanwhile, several larger parties on the patio who were seated after us began receiving their meals. During this time, our waiter never returned to check on us, refill water, or provide any update. Around 1:13 PM, after still receiving no food or communication, we asked our waiter where our order was and mentioned that we had been waiting a long time while other tables were being served. I then got up to find a manager to discuss the situation. When I approached the individual who was "acting as the manager" and asked if he was the manager, his response was "Depends on the question." This was an immediate red flag and not an appropriate way to respond to a customer concern. He came to our table and confirmed our order, stating that the ticket showed the food had been put in at 1:13 PM, which was inaccurate considering we ordered around 12:30 PM. We explained that we had already been waiting roughly 45 minutes, but instead of addressing the experience or the lack of communication, the focus seemed to be only on getting the food out. Our food finally arrived around 1:28 PM. After finishing our meal, the check was presented with no acknowledgment, apology, or adjustment for the delay or poor service experience. When we asked the manager if any adjustment would be made due to the situation, he again referenced the ticket saying the food was brought out within 20 minutes, which did not reflect what actually happened. I explained that this response felt like deflection and dismissal of our experience rather than accountability. He offered a credit for a future visit, which we declined since we were visiting from out of town and would not be returning. As he walked away, he returned sarcastically asking, "Did you put those reviews in yet?" He later claimed the waiter told him additional information and then offered 25% off the check, but by that point the lack of professionalism and empathy had already defined the experience. This situation was handled poorly from start to finish. The delay was frustrating, but the lack of communication, accountability, and professionalism from management made it far worse. I went on a Tuesday night and reservations were required for indoor dining-it was full inside. There were plenty of people at the bar and there is also outdoor dining. We had the BANG BANG SALMON BITES, BREAD SERVICE; and GAMBAS AL AJILLO as starters/appetizers. The salmon bites were very good and original. I think most will enjoy the gambas (shrimp in garlic) at the Monroe, but I'm partial to the Spanish traditional style which is very heavy garlic. My table had the following dishes: SOUS VIDE LAMB CHOPS; JAPANESE SHORT RIB; STEAK DIANE (8oz and the ribeye (larger portion); BLACKENED SNAPPER; and my entree, AMERICAN WAGYU RAGU. I tried the steak (ribeye) and it was very good: medium rare. The 8oz steak at the table was cooked medium and although the person enjoyed it- you need to be clear you want to have the steak medium rare, it makes a huge difference. I visit Tallahassee once a month, eating out at a different place each time, and this is hands down the best food I have had after many months of visits. The Monroe Flatbread was excellent, very flavorful with lots of steak. The bread bowl was good. The Steak Frites was also good. The star of the show was the Japanese shortrib - it was superb. A little bit spicy, sweet, and salty. The artichoke rotolo was very good. Every dessert was great. The pastry chef came out to pour the hot chocolate over the wonderball to ensure it melts properly. Beautiful and delicious. The hazelnut cake was great - the passion fruit curd was over the top good. The Milfe cake reminded me of a light napoleon. Service was friendly, perfectly timed, and attentive. The interior seating floor is roomy and sharp looking. The bartender was so kind and attentive and the bar back, Eric, made sure to welcome me with kindness and expert hospitality upon my entrance ~ just to give context, I stumbled in here with fascination. I'm a native of Tallahassee who hasn't lived there in 16 years, so I was overjoyed to see such a fabulous venue in my hometown. He picked up my glee and made sure the rest of the staff made me feel like a queen! The only downside is that I ordered a gluten free pancake, only to learn, after eating it, that it wasn't gluten free. I'm allergic to wheat. Luckily, I don't have violent allergic reactions, but what if I did?! And tho I'm a huge fan of eggs Benedict, I chose the Monroe Omelette w/ cheese grits & asked for my bacon to be crispy (which it was) while my husband ordered the breakfast sliders (3 good sized 'smaller' eggs, cheese & bacon sandwiches) w/ a side of their crispy potato wedges topped with cheese. The Monroe at Somo Walls on South Monroe Street is beautiful inside with a spacious dining area and a beautifully appointed and nicely lit bar area. The velvet covered bar stools are very comfortable. They have a large covered outdoor seating area as well. We know that reservations are suggested so we went early (just after they opened at 5 pm) and sat at the bar to visit with Adam, who mixed an amaretto sour and a Sazerac cocktail for us. Both delicious. We ordered and split three appetizers. The cloud bread lives up to its name, light and fluffy, served with a savory, herbed butter. The etoufee fritters are made with chicken, crawfish and andouille sausage with a spicy garlic shrimp remoulade. The potato fonduta consists of crispy kennebec potatoes served with a Gruyère cheese sauce, crisp bits of prosuitto di Parma and is sprinkled with minced herbs. All were delectable and quite filling. The menu features many interesting appetizers and entrees, and we plan to return and try more. The Monroe is a great place for a romantic or casual dinner, or a get together with a group of friends. Portion size is appropriate and satisfying however there is no way to know what people are basing their expectations on. So I will let you know what I compare. all of my Tallahassee restaurant experiences to: Cypress was (in my opinion the best Tallahassee had to offer). This place is special, deliberate effort and care is put into the experience & service. We've never had any complaints about the quality or preparation of the food. Some in our party have had specific drink requests and communication regarding these instances has been excellent. If there were any issues with the quality of the food, I expect it would be swiftly addressed. There is one thing that I will never order again: ceviche. This is b/c Café de Martin has set the bar high... and if you don't know their recipe, there's no point trying. The decor is lovely & different from anywhere else in town: rattan, gold & houseplants & done well. The patio area is well appointed with foliage and comfortable seating. This is a great place to meet friends or bring out of towners. They offer spirits from their adjacent distillery (only one in town). I understand there are some hard feelings about public funds contributing to this business. I'm also a life long resident of Tallahassee, who is pleased to enjoy a new restaurant on my side of town, this is a new feeling b/c Southside is often overlooked for news projects. I've been to The Monroe three times now and had a similar experience each time. The food is generally good and the ambiance is chic, but the service is not good at all. During the last visit, my party of 3 waited nearly 15 minutes before a server arrived to take a drink order (I had to ask the hostess for help), then the server never checked on us again or refilled drinks (similar experience during the prior two visits). Once we asked for the check, it took another 20 minutes. I'm writing a review because this was not an isolated experience. Traveling home from a work conference we decided to stop here for a bite to eat. If I am ever in the Tallahassee area again, I will not be giving this place another try. We arrived at 12:40 pm and even though there were open tables we had a 20-30 minute wait. Upon sitting down it took almost 15 minutes to get 2 Diet Coke and 2 lattes. We then ordered and it took a full hour to get our meals. During that time we had no one check on us or provide an update on why there was such a delay. We stopped someone to find out and were told it was coming out in a few moments. Our food arrived about 15 minutes later. The meal was fine, but nothing phenomenal. We asked for our checks while we were still eating because we wanted to get back on the road. The waiter brought one check as we were finishing up. We asked for him to provide separate checks and he returned with our checks split 2 ways for 4 people. We had to ask again for him to separate them and were provided a discount to our meals for the inconvenience. We handed him our bills and cards immediately to expedite the process. The waiter returned with our checks, but not any of our cards. He apologized and went back inside and 10 minutes later came back with them. He had not run a single one of our cards the first time he came out. While I understand that a server is not responsible for how long a kitchen takes to bring food, it is their job to keep you informed. It is also the job of a good manager to check on these situations and ensure things are made right. After 2 hours we were able to get back on the road again. There was nothing phenomenal about this place and none of us are interested in ever going back. Especially if it takes 2 hours for a basic sandwich to be prepared and served. read more

We had an amazing brunch at The Monroe this holiday weekend. The entire experience was excellent. We had reservations to be sat at 10 AM and were promptly sat following check in. Our waiter gave great recommendations for our breakfast cocktails Lych Collins, Thorn Whip, and an Espresso Martini (this was by request and off menu). In order to review the brunch we decided to pick three different breakfast staples to grade. The eggs were perfectly cooked. Everything was bright and flavorful. I would also recommend a side of hot sauce to pair with their perfectly crispy potato wedges. We were in and out of the restaurant within 45 minutes and never felt rushed. I regret choosing the duck as it was very bean heavy and salty (they did warn me up front on the saltiness, but I didn't realize it would be THAT salty).
