    So many hats
    Elizabeth B.

This was my second visit to this haberdashery. Before returning, and now as a Yelper, I read over the recent reviews and found the business is still locally owned but is now perceived as stuffy and rude. I wanted to return to this hat shop as my husband and I were planning for an upcoming themed party. He was in need of a special hat to complete the look. The space is located inside the Crown Center shops on the second floor. The center had easy access from the attached parking garage. The floor to ceiling displays line each wall and several racks fill the interior floor creating a tight squeeze around the store. On arrival, we read over the business' guidelines. To clarify, this business is not a costume hat shop. They offer mid-range to high-end hats for both casual and special occasions. I think this type of shop, in a family-friendly mall, may often be confused with a costume hat shop. The shopkeeper, on more than one occasion, advised guests to ask her for help when trying on hats. Often after the guest had already picked up the products. It must be challenging to control this impulse behavior of trying on interesting hats. Feathery fascinator, fedoras and more are proudly on display near the front. With so many high-quality hats, there really isn't a good place to move hats out of reach. I'll admit, to do this review, I broke the store policy and snapped a few discreet images. If only to capture the range of products available through this business. Perhaps the photo policy is in place to prevent numerous selfies and damage to the hats. We approached the shopkeeper and explained our situation. My husband has a larger head and the standard hat doesn't fit. Seeking out a higher end hat, we were hopeful to find a fit. The woman listened carefully and asked what hat we were wanting. She pulled down some hats to try on and eventually suggested a fedora. The style fit the theme we were working with and the hat actually came in a size he could wear. He had several colors to choose from and once we settled on the color to purchase, the shopkeeper gave us guidance on how to keep the hat clean and care for it. Then, she wowed us by opening a small tin box to select a feather as a finishing touch for this accessory. We visited during a sale and scored a discount on the purchase, which was a pleasant surprise. We left pleased to have located a hat that would serve the purpose of our upcoming party and other events going forward. Crown Center offers validated garahe parking for weekday visits. Parking is free over the weekends.

This shot doesn't do it justice - all the good hats are in the back

This is a hat store by the way - because the title could mean anything. I don't own hats - no wait - I own a sun hat that I bought on sale at J.Crew and never have worn it - so it doesn't really count. I don't wear hats - I guess because I think it takes balls. It's not the 40s anymore, out on the street men don't need their hats to be men anymore and women don't need their hats to be women anymore. It's become a useless accessory to some and a bold fashion choice as of late. I have my trepidations - but to hell with them - I'm going to buy a hat, a men's hat (because they get all the good hats - I'm not looking for a beret or anything). The men's hats are the best - the Stetson Gable, the wool Fedora, the 'Driving-Style Walking Hat", Porkpies, Biltmores, and Panama straw in colors beige, brown, blue, and black (a few grays and ivories). The man running the store is great! He taught me to put on a hat properly (and there is a way, apparently). I'll give you the secret: set it on top of your head without any downward pressure to try to fit it tighter - let is sit there for a moment to get the look of it - and then adjust to comfort BUT beware of forcing it out of its original shape. Wearing a hat properly means wearing its intended shape. As a woman, I'm a small in the men's hats (a medium if they don't have a small). In the women's section - it's one size fits all. The guy kept leading me over to the women's hats that looked so dated to me, like I would be playing dress up if I tried any one of them on. But the men's hats - they felt right and I still looked like myself with them on - only better. The prices are standard - they're not the cheapest of hats - like the ones you can get at a used vintage store (but vintage hats never seem to fit me right and there is only one in stock of the one I like, so I leave dissatisfied and wishing my head were smaller or larger). I found most of them, spanking new, to be between $60 - $95 and soon, when I get the balls to do it, I'm buying a men's hat.

Me trying on their hats, and me wearing my favorite one the beret

Employees are so rude. Seriously don't know how this store is still in business! I've been in multiple times, no smiles, not even a hello.

A great place, fantastic selection of hats for both men and women. They will also stretch hats and are quite helpful.

Several people entered and all Michael asked was to read the store policy before handling and trying on the hats.

I was able to get some awesome incense and trinkets. I attempted to squeeze myself into some tiny jeans on the sale rack! I got them on. lol I just couldn't walk. I think they were in the 0-2 range. If you are that size, they have 2 cool pair of jeans on the sale rack! I found a rad pair of overalls which I wound up purchasing and a rad, bucket hat too. The couple (I'm assuming couple but a man and woman) running the place were very nice. I thought all the prices were reasonable! My overalls were the highest item but I think they were around $50. My cool bucket hat was only $11. A box of incense cones were $1.25- $2.00. I'll definitely be back in!

If you want to remember the glory days of the 60's & 70's pop on in - they still exist here and challenging the current day status quo is more important now than ever before. You can get you a Deadhead sticker for your Cadillac or VW Van, the coolest hippy clothes for the next festival, incense by the bucket load, candles, art - mass produced and locally created, a room full of vinyl and every inch of the place is filled with something more cool than what you were just admiring. I picked up a few stickers and a zine as gifts. This gem of a store has been so clutch over the years for picking up gifts. Some of the people in my life are, um, a little hard to shop for, but when I come in here, I always come away with something great. It's all so well-curated; some gifts are classy, some funny, and many are versatile. It beats the socks off of going into a big box store in a million ways. Being in a charming stretch of a walkable area adds to its appeal, and the staff is always friendly. They also have Pickwick candles which are some of the best in town. These soy candles will last multiple seasons and almost all of them smell amazing. Cheers to this shop, they're doing it right and have saved my bacon every December since they've opened.

Board books every where. While I went there for a Trapp candle leather/tobacco for my son (which smells like leather and tobacco and is really nice) the amount of board books for children is phenomenal. I could easily spend $100 on board books there. And not just regular board books, but interesting topics like the Kansas City board book I bought. 3. Haha the cluster eff towels, cluster eff pencils, Get the eff to sleep book (which I bought). The unique gifts and trinkets are bountiful and wonderful. I laughed out loud plenty of times, including at the Dog in Chairs gift cards. There's plenty of things to see and buy. Thanks to Adam and the Yelp shop local event, The General Store is a must see.
