In honor of #ThankYouThursday where we pen a review for a local fav, The General Store in downtown OP was the first place my mind headed. This gem of a store has been so clutch over the years for picking up gifts. Some of the people in my life are, um, a little hard to shop for, but when I come in here, I always come away with something great. It's all so well-curated; some gifts are classy, some funny, and many are versatile. It beats the socks off of going into a big box store in a million ways. Being in a charming stretch of a walkable area adds to its appeal, and the staff is always friendly. They also have Pickwick candles which are some of the best in town. These soy candles will last multiple seasons and almost all of them smell amazing. Cheers to this shop, they're doing it right and have saved my bacon every December since they've opened. read more

This is SUCH a fun store!!! We were shopping along downtown Overland Park and stumbled into this local gem. They have a gift for literally anyone that you can think of! I bought a hilarious (and slightly inappropriate) oven mit and cocktail napkins for my aunt as a hostess gift. They have loads of candles, home decor, games, toys, jewelry, men's stuff, bath and body products, etc. If you're looking to check some folks off of your holiday list, stop in to The General Store, you're sure to find what you need! something for everyone! 1. I'm going to this store for every birthday and Christmas, including my little grand baby who turns 1 on 12/31. 2. The General Store is a board book extravaganza. Board books every where. While I went there for a Trapp candle leather/tobacco for my son (which smells like leather and tobacco and is really nice) the amount of board books for children is phenomenal. I could easily spend $100 on board books there. And not just regular board books, but interesting topics like the Kansas City board book I bought. 3. Haha the cluster eff towels, cluster eff pencils, Get the eff to sleep book (which I bought). The unique gifts and trinkets are bountiful and wonderful. I laughed out loud plenty of times, including at the Dog in Chairs gift cards. There's plenty of things to see and buy. Thanks to Adam and the Yelp shop local event, The General Store is a must see. One of my favorite shops to visit in downtown OP! They always have such fun items to browse and look at it. It is a good mix of locally made products, and national products that are a little less known or super quirky. They always have good house music playing in the store and I always enjoy walking around the store. The staff has always been very helpful and pleasant, which is a huge bonus. it is definitely a good store to visit if you are looking for a gift, knick-knacks, retro candy, fun kitchen items (ex. oven mitts with funny/crude sayings on them), candles, stationary, toys, and pretty much everything in between! read more

This is a super cute shop in old downtown OP. If you need a gift for someone that is hard to buy for, this is the shop you can find a plethora of things that they will not have and didn't even know they wanted. I spent a long time browsing and laughing at the funny merchandise and making notes of things I need to come back for on different occasions. Even their greeting cards are amazing! read more

Saturday a week ago I took my wife on a day date to visit several local stores to which we had just been introduced. the first stop on our list was The General Store in OP. Neither of us had been there before, but both of us had heard of it. One of my wife's friends, in fact, had given her a Christmas gift last year that came from here, and that was what piqued our interest. The location was convenient, in a string stores comprising an old-school downtown storefront. There isn't much parking "at" the store, but there are plenty of spots around, and the stroll from your car to the store will be fun in and of itself. We even stopped in a few other shops that weren't on our list, but I'll save that for another review. We were greeted upon entry and we had polite conversation with the owner. The selection of items was diverse and fun. The store stocks everything from old-fashioned toys and games to modern jewelry and collectibles. Prices are fair and the quality of the merchandise was really great. I can see myself shopping here, especially for those people who "have everything." Low and behold, I have found one of my new favorite shops in Kansas City! General Store & Co. is nothing like their name suggests. I saw no rations for purchase, nor oxen, wheel axles or bullets. What I did see what a glorious selection of home accessories that are guaranteed to make your home 113% more fabulous. Where to start? How about with their stuffed robots? Part of the proceeds goes to charity, and you pick which one based on the color of the robot. They are frickin adorable. Alas, they look an awful lot like a dog toy and I don't think they would last long in my condo. Same goes for the giant sock monkeys. Someday I shall have a room dedicated entirely to adorable things that my dog would like to destroy, but until then I shall just have to admire them from afar. They have a large selection of candles, my favorite being the High Cotton fragrance. Another highlight was cognac and tobacco, which smells like an awesome man should. There are plenty of options for children's gifts, unique jewelry for the quirky lady in your life, and knick-knacks to make your home more awesome. It was an utter pleasure to search through this store, and when I have more time I will certainly be back. read more

What a cute store and great find in downtown Overland Park! General Store and Co. is filled with such unique and quirky gifts, knick-knacks, toys, greetings cards, books, and all the little things you never knew you wanted so badly. You might not wake up needing to come here. But once you step inside, you realize you totally can't live without a sock monkey in your life. Or a stuffed robot! Or a book full of pick-up lines. The other day I was just thinking about how I could use so more books of paper dolls. Today I went into General Store & Co. where I found a bevy of them! I love checking out the odds and ends at General Store & Co. The place always has unique goods and fun home furnishings. I also really appreciate that they seem to try to feature local goods within the store, such as HammerPress. The store does feature some vintage or vintage-esque items, like toy robots and sock monkeys. They also have some great coffee table, children and quirky books. In addition to picking up "American Family of the 1980s Paper Dolls" I also got a copy of "Everybody Dies - A children's book for grown ups". There are some really nice home furnishings. They have some nice patterned throw pillows in right now and I also contemplated a set of owl salt and pepper shakers. General Store also has some nice lotions, soaps and candles available as well. Overall, the store is a bit pricey. But it's a local store featuring fun and eclectic goods! I highly recommend going in and browsing ... and at least picking up some gum, which is available. read more

You do NOT want to sleep on The General Store! I don't know where I've been but I discovered this gem after wandering around the OP farmer's market last weekend. This will now be my go-to spot for gifts for myself, the boyfriend, friends, family, coworkers, etc. They have a huge selection for people of all ages and sell locally hand poured Pickwick candles. This is the kind of place you find things you didn't even know you wanted/needed. My friend loved the KU Hall of Fame t shirt I gave her for her birthday and I received many compliments on the earrings I bought myself on the same shopping trip. The employees are incredibly helpful and gift wrapped the t shirt beautifully. This reminds me..need to return before Mother's Day! read more

What an awesome store! It houses everything that I love: art books, candles, Jonathan Adler stuff, hats, chocolates, stationary, local this and local that etc.... It's all housed in a beautiful, clean and contemporary store that is comfortable and easy to shop. I love the fixtures and the way everything is displayed. This store is done by someone that has a really sharp eye. The people working the store (owner, partner and mother) are all very nice and helpful as can be. It's a perfect place if looking for a gift for a loved one or for yourself. It actually has become one of my first stops if looking for a gift because they always have something unique and product that is less saturated around town. It's also a nice place to stop into if you need a little something for the home too, there seems to be a interior design studio housed in the back of the store. It is tucked into the quaint and charming old Overland Park downtown. Of course, I want it tucked away into Westport or the Crossroads but hey, downtown OP deserves to have a little bit of luxury too. Definitely a fun store full of quirky gifts for those hard to shop for people! Any time we have unique gifts on our shopping list we make sure to stop in at the General Store, and we've never come away empty handed. There's a nice mix of local products and edibles, paper goods, snarky socks, scented candles and soaps, jewelry, toys, and the list goes on. The General Store is not just a clever name, my friends. Some of my favorite purchases have included the previously mentioned snarky socks, gourmet chocolate bars in a variety of flavors, and a large wine glass that said "Stay Fancy". Seriously, there's something for everyone! Prices are reasonable, and the employees are friendly and happy to box up purchases for future gifting. I highly suggest popping into the General Store just to check it out, especially if you're struggling to find that perfect gift. read more

Love this store! But how can I possibly describe it? I suppose the best thing to say about it is that if you need a gift for someone, anyone, you can find something here. There are lovely soaps and candles, high end chocolate bars, books, stationary and all sorts of genuinely nice things. There are also silly/dirty cards, gum with funny stuff on the packages, toys and some genuinely funny stuff to be had. But wait, there's more! Yes, there really is! This little gem in downtown OP just opened up and it is going to be a destination shop for sure. It is not wall to ceiling stuffed with merchandise either. I got the feeling that the owners wanted every offering to inspire something imaginative when sighted. It reminded me of this wonderful general store in Gruen, TX. I kept waiting for Mr Godsey, from the Waltons, to come say howdy. And while the charm is it exterior draw, once inside it is filled with art, books, teas, soaps, paper tea cups that are more origami art then just paper. I can tell that the owner Michael has a very eclectic but fun eye and this has to be a regular stop as the merchandise will be ever changing! A very cool shop! read more

The General Store & Co is such of a hidden gem in downtown Overland Park! They have so many unique pieces and I love the owner of the store, as well as his mom who works there sometimes! What a fabulous place! If you are looking for a place to get home decor, unique gifts or great products you would not find any where else in KC this is your place. When you walk in you are immediately transported to a super hip boutique in SoHO. The interior design space itself is something to admire and when you throw in electronic dance beats playing softly in the background I thought I died and went to cool kid heaven. Mike is so gifted with his taste in design, bath products, furnishings and gifts. You can browse this place for hours learning about products that you have probably not seen in KC before because the owner Mike has imported them in from France or other fabulous places. Mike is so helpful, nice and cute you will feel like your really trendy friend is giving you free advice of what is cool-never a pushy salesman. What a welcome new shop in the KC area. What an adorable little shop. I found an autographed book of pictures of the flint hills for my Dad and a hilarious "saving up for weed" coin bank for a funny friend of mine all in the same shop. There is such a wide variety of items and a lot of local talent represented too. Plus this shop is located in the quaint shopping area of downtown of Overland Park so the whole experience is great. I have visited this store several times since the story in the KC Star, but unfortunately have not been able to get inside the door because they keep changing their Sunday hours. This week they were open 10am - noon; I visited at 1:30 based on last week's hours of 1-3 (when my 4:00 visit was too late). It might be a great store, but between the crazy hours and the pile of mums you have to climb over to even get to the door, I'll be hard pressed to actually spend any money in there. read more

I waited until after the holidays to write my review. I purchased 6 gifts for friends from this store. You know girlfriend gifts, neighbor gifts, etc. Wow did they love these small unique gifts. There is not enough room to describe all the stuff they have. But a sampling is uniquely designed recycled note pads and pens, funny packs of gum for gag gifts, specialty soaps, lotions, and candles all from Kansas, jewelry, books and well some slightly naughty cards. My experience in the store was awesome too. The lady that day was patient with my browsing but when asked for advice was quick to show me suggestions. Very helpful. The store is open and items are displayed very nicely. If you are looking for a very unique or fun gift, this is the store for you. Located in the heart of downtown Overland Park, you can also do a lot of other shopping and eating. I wanted to write this review because I had not previously heard of it, even though at one time I was told they had been reviewed in the Overland Park paper I believe. Check them out! read more
