My husband and I always make it a point to visit The Mill for steaks on every visit. It's always been consistently wonderful. We sit by the fire, have drinks and an appetizer until our dinner is ready then we sit at the cozy little tables that surround the fire. The service is always pleasant and transparent with wait times for food. The steaks are always cooked perfectly and have a perfectly charred outside. Waitress/bartender was too busy waiting on her man to take our order 20m after SHE SAT US. Then said you ordered it medium well as if that's the reason it looks like stringed beef jerky. I ordered the medallions none of these are in similar sizes. Maybe I'm overreacting but I would assume when were your only customers you would give us good service. You walk in and it is the coziest atmosphere with the fireplace roaring, a piano man singing and the bartender giving you a beer. I absolutely love the quaint ski lodge vibe, even in the summer! My husband and I visited McCall for Valentine's weekend and made reservations at The Mill for dinner. We arrived early to enjoy the fire and have a drink in the lobby/bar. After we were seated, we were pleased to see they were offering a Valentine Prix Fixe menu. We both chose the filet and added shrimp. The good: New York Strip was cooked right and tasted great The bad: service... I got there 5:15pm on Sunday and was informed dining room opens at 5:30pm. I indicated I would like to be seated in dining room not next to the fire and asked to preview the menu now! Never got the menu... waited over half hour and had to remind the nice lady in the fire room that I want to be seated in the dining room (she had no recollection of our original conversation) I was taken to the dining room after two parties that arrived after me were seated :( the dining room service was better! I was even asked once how my meal was. So, since I drive a bus and brought 40 people to 3rd street Inn I don't drink! I thought maybe that was why the fire room lady passed on what I asked for (sarcasm) the meal was good, ambiance of the restaurant is very nice, service (which I believe is equally as important as the meal when you spend 60on a sgl meal + tip) no drinks or desert... well, could definitely improve! Came here with a friend who is from the area and he said it was the nicest place to have a steak. Initially, we sat in the bar area, but when we found out they had a fire going in the dining room we finished our drinks and headed on over to the dining area. Service was excellent and the food was, just okay. I had the prime rib which was a generous portion, what it could've been a little bit more tender, it did the job though. We were staying in McCall for our 50TH Anniversary and were recommended this place for PRIME RIB. It is a dark Old place and not busy at all in early September. The service was really friendly. - Wouldn't Steak My Life On It Took my wife here thinking we'd get fine dining. Instead, it felt like we walked into a live-action episode of Kitchen Nightmares -- minus Gordon Ramsay to save us. We made reservations, but apparently that just reserved us the right to wait... and wait. Drinks took 40 minutes. One finally showed up, the other never made it out of the dugout because the keg was tapped out. Guess it wasn't "craft" beer, it was just "crafty" to put it on the menu. Dinner staggered in 40 minutes later. My fish was cooked so long it should've had its own retirement party, and my wife's prime rib sandwich was hotter than a jalapeño in a sauna. I swear the plate came with a side of third-degree burns. Our server was basically a magician: disappeared all night, then reappeared instantly the moment my credit card came out. Suddenly she was speedy Gonzales, whispering that she'd taken my terrible drink off the bill like she'd just handed me the keys to the city. By the end, the only thing truly "well done" was my regret. This place is less "fine dining" and more "dining fine if you like mystery meat, microwave timing, and missing drinks." Do yourself a flavor: stay home, fire up the grill, and save fifty bucks. At least then when something's burnt, you'll know who to blame. read more

I rarely feel compelled to write to review but the moral of the story of this restaurant is: check your receipts (if you decide to go). It was our second and last time ever going to The Mill as full-time residents of the area. Cons (1) Smells like cigar smoke (2) They seem to be in the habit of food taking at least 40 minutes to arrive (presumably so you will order drinks and then not check your receipts after). All tables around us ordered multiple drinks to offset the wait. (3) False Advertising. They give you menus with incorrectly priced items (ales say $5 but they charge $6-8 per item). They continued to charge us these "new" prices and initially charged us for 2 extra drinks. (4) They do not give you an itemized receipt unless you ask. We asked for ours and discovered they had overcharged us $30. They did refund and charge us the correct pricing, and they were kind in this process. (5) Food is unusually greasy and overpriced as stated in other reviews. The cost and the product are incongruent. The only Pro is the historical atmosphere/decor. We rarely eat out, but this experience seemed unusually unacceptable. We left feeling like we're not sure we ever want to eat out again if this is the state of service in this world but if we ever do it will certainly not be the Mill again -- leaving us with about 4 other options in McCall. read more

First off the don't know the first thing about cooking steaks. It's almost as if they use microwaves. Literally took and hour and a half to nuke this "medium" boot hide. The ambiance is ski lodge with grand piano. The bar is great. It's dark and subtle and great tables and a for a small group this is great. Food is shockingly expensive. $$$$ to $$$$$ seems odd for this area. 8 mozzarella sticks $19. A large Cesar with grilled chicken is $25. The burgers are really greasy. As is a lot of food out here but certainly not worth the $22 cost. Maybe $16 would been high, 13 would be appropriate. The service is good. Bar Table service with personality. It seems they care about service. The food waitress was not real happy with us. They had two waiters waiting on use 1 for food and 1 for drinks because we were in the bar but it worked great end the end. -1 star for greasy food. -1 star for really high prices. -1 star as the food server was nice but seemed annoyed with us. Ordered the steak medallions and was assured that they were cut from filets. They were neither cut properly as medallions, and looked like chunks of beef stew, but if they were actually filet they were the toughest and grizzled pieces of filet I have ever eaten. No compensation or even apology was offered when this was brought to the attention of my server/bartender. The shrimp "add on" was also tough as if it had been cooked earlier that day and then reheated. The service was average and with the terrible food in mind was tipped accordingly. The bar was very cool with the live edge bar top and the rustic fireplace. One gets the impression when walking in that the dining experience was going to be epic. A shame that couldn't be further from the truth. I will never dine here again and recommend avoiding it to anyone else. read more

This place is a mixed bag. Can't say we regret the gamble totally for various reasons but here's a honest assessment.. you will have to decide if you want some adventure of your own. Food... Excellent quality on the protein. No sear on outside, center of beef cold. That was disappointing. Good portions. Bread was good, and they are generous with the butter. Produce good quality, salad dressings were just fine. Prawns were large, and cooked perfectly. Great flavor. Temp was right when it was served. Sangiovese was excellent. Bartender was friendly. Hostess was friendly... waitress was not on the ball, slow to bring check, and took forever to take payment. We thought we were never going to make it out. Thankfully my date is very humorous, so being imprisoned after our meal was acceptable. Ambiance was a roller coaster.. Lighting was good, decor was eclectic, rustic and unique. Tables were nicely spaced, and comfortable. The music was absolutely horrid, and we felt like we were on a hidden prank show. Let me clarify... it was not just a bad mix. It was literally the worst of the worst play list. The music didn't fit the atmosphere, and had no chance to do anything but torture people of all ages. I would be concerned for the staff having to listen to that music on their shifts, it's so bad... i fear for their mental health, and we even contemplated trying to drown each other with the drinking water from our table. We discussed the possibility that the ownership may just be completely masochistic. Maybe the normal patrons don't complain because they are so advanced in age they can't hear the music, or are mostly from CA and are just thankful it isn't gangster rap. The reason. I still give the three stars is because the quality of the food was high, they had a wooden Indian in the bar, the wine was awesome, and my date is such a catch...he would make even a negative 5 star establishment back in the positive. Since he's my date and not available to assist you through giving this place a shot, I suggest you use caution before stepping through the threshold. When I mentioned the soap was not working she came to argue with me that it had been working, like wow it was not spitting out soap. When we were getting ready to leave we told them that for the price the service and food should be better.... A steak was $50+ like how can you serve bad food and horrible service??!!!! Then she began to be even more rude, like wait why would you be rude instead of nice, I'm shocked with this service... nobody gestured with kindness, we were greeted by hostess saying "I guess there's 3?" Worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant. The food took an hour and 40 minutes from sitting down to coming out. I don't fault the employees because they were extremely understaffed. The owner of this establishment is known to be a jerk therefore he cannot get employees. Do not support this dying restaurant until the owner changes his ways. This restaurant broke my heart last night. I had such great memories coming here with my dad each year back in the 90's and the food used to be fantastic! Or maybe my bar was lower at 11. We just paid $150 dollars for food you couldn't pay me to eat. We came for the Winter Ice Carnival and I wanted to share this place with my girlfriend since it was nostalgic. She loved the town and the ice sculptures, and said she could even picture herself living here.. UNTIL we ate at the Mill. The food and drinks were so horribly atrocious that it brought her opinion of the trip to NEUTRAL. We will never be returning to this restaurant and I have been here many times with great food, but after returning after three years no more. Our fries were green and edible waitress even admitted fryer probably wasn't hot enough and it soaked in all their gross fat in the french fries. my fish was tasteless. Along with my rice had no odor or taste. We also had French tip and it was so mediocre for the price. We were just appalled at what they were feeding us for the prices they were charging. Waitress admitted the fries were their fault, but gave us no compensation on our bill for the bad food. Service definitely was not good at all. Don't believe the hype! Our party of 8 was concerned by the negative comments and reviews. This place did not disappoint. Walked in with no reservation had a great round of drinks in the bar around the fire in the ski lift chairs. We were seated quickly and had prompt service by all of the friendly staff. I have eaten here plenty in the past with nothing but great experiences. Last night was beyond bad. I ordered a prime rib with a side of the potato and clam chowder. The clam chowder was so salty it was not good at all. It got sent back. The waiter offered a salad to his credit. When the prime rib got there (ordered med rare) the outsides were well done and the insides were raw masked by a short sear in a frying pan. This I sent back only to replaced by the exact same thing. Only seared a tiny bit more. This is where I learned that Hubba bubba has a roast beef flavor. It was an absolute chew piece of meat. They saved money on seasonings by not using any. Maybe they used up all of the salt in the soup? I brought 98% of the steak home for dog treats. I could have complained again but with two fails the third attempt wasn't going to get better. Service was good but hard to be great with a bad kitchen. Two other tables next to us had food sent back to the kitchen as well. Sad to see this place hit rock bottom. read more
