Rip Off! picked up some prepackaged hamburger, it was weighted it at check out, didn't take tare for the package (tare off sets the cost of packaging so you only pay for the product). Cashier just blew me off. A roll of white paper weighs about 40 pounds, so just for the hamburger at $8 a pound means they made $320 off that roll of paper. So if a company is not honest in weight what else is going on behind the scene? Never going back read more

Make sure they completely understand your order. Ordered steak sliced a certain way and ended up with tiny chunks...Called and they said to bring it back in and they will recut. Explain to me how we paid $89.00 and the recut meat $63.00 and we were refused a refund because it was too much work to process the WRONG order. Not to mention they recut a cheaper cut of meat. When asked why we couldnt have the same cut we paid for we were told it would be $180.00...Please explain the math read more

I have been using The Meating Place for 40-years (Yes, 40). I have never been disappointed. Recently, I need to make Chili for a crowd of about 60-people. They have always been accommodating for cuts of meats and special needs. I needed 15-pounds of a coarse-grind for Chili, not the standard hamburger grind. The Chili was wonderful and the grind makes the difference! They are wonderful. The Place has changed a little over the years, but the quality, the personalities and the warmth remains the same. We drove from Waynesboro for our first visit this morning; it was clean , and the staff was helpful, friendly and efficient. I was impressed with the quality and freshness of the meat. Meating Place sells locally processed meats, simple meals, coffee, sodas, and a small selection of local honey, candies, cookies. You can sit for a hamburger or sandwich at super-reasonable prices. See the handwritten menu posted as of 11/11/11. I didn't ask if the hamburger was cooked from the local beef sold n the cases! I was not able to stay to order any food but I did buy -- for cooking at home -- an excellent New York Strip steak, sausage patties, and ponhass, the Virginia form of scrapple. Ponhass and scrapple are traditional farm family food from Virginia and Pennsylvania and hard to find, especially fresh. Meats, including large sides of beef, are cut and prepared for sale right there. I did not ask if they butcher in the same building. All the dates were the same day as my visit except for the sausage patties I bought which had been frozen 4 days before. As soon as I started looking in the case one of the staff stepped forward to ask in a friendly way if I wanted help finding anything. The store is out at the intersection of Middlebrook and Dynamite Roads in beautiful farm country a few miles west of Staunton, VA. Note: the street numbers, as you drive away from Staunton on Middlebrook Road, reset at some point and climb again. This meant that leaving town, looking for the store by the address, I thought I should have reached the store when I was way too close to the center of Staunton. Keep going... it's worth it. The steak was terrific. We had it tonight. After I try the ponhass I will report back on their particular way of making this peppery cornmeal and pork concoction, sliced thick from a loaf. Ponhass excellent, too. Just the right amount of pepper and smell of the cornmeal. I have never been able to buy this treat fresh before visiting here. The meat here is worth the little extra drive! Meat is fresh and of good quality. Even frozen meats are obviously frozen fresh instead of sitting around. Grocery store meat cannot measure up to the freshness and excellent quality of their products, and the prices are much more reasonable. The staff is most helpful and friendly. read more

The meating place is the only place we buy beef now. We love the freshness and the friendlieness of the employees. We select the bulk cuts we wish to buy and they trim them and slice them to our specifications 8 ft in front of you. Theres never any question of the freshness and quality of what you are buying. the prices are better than the local grocery chains. They run weekly sales posted in the newleader. The employees go out of their way to help you and they never forget a face......or should I say a four year old that looks for a ring pop as soon as we get off the exit and head that way. A hidden gem thats for sure and we're so glad to have found it. read more
