Super tasty quality food, I noticed that on the menu it even tells you which farm the meat came from, or where the ice cream was made etc. The Greek Lamb and the Gammon are both brilliant. The portions are huge and I'm always left with enough food for another meal but save room for the Holly Bush sundae because you wont ever have a such a selection of tasty locally made ice cream :) The prices are great too, last time I went it was around 30quid for the 2 of us.

Regardless, this lovely, traditional-looking country pub is just around the corner from Maghull train station and is perfect for a quiet pint with friends. It's fairly quiet generally; free from kids and youngsters being all noisy and generally annoying, so it's also the perfect place to go for a quiet pub lunch or dinner. This is also helped by the great food on offer, as the Great Mogul does good quality pub food that is served in large portions, perfect to mop up a few pints with. The sophistication of the food isn't particularly high but it's very tasty, homemade cooking and easily some of the best in the local area. The service is similarly satisfying as the staff there are friendly and attentive, ensuring you have an enjoyable experience whenever you visit.

There are comfortable sofas and cushions in the front pub area and larger dining area in the middle. Casual, uncluttered and clean lines is the look. We were welcomed and shown to a table overlooking the Leeds - Liverpool canal which passes right outside. The lunch menu is quite extensive with options to cover all tastes. We started with baked camembert with red onion marmalade and shared between us. Well put together and the onion marmalade was the perfect accompaniment. I chose a main of steamed suet pudding of pheasant, partridge and wild mushrooms with garlic mash, red cabbage and cabernet jus. Just excellent. Great British food at its best. The pudding was more like a suet crust pie and the game and mushroom filling was very enjoyable and perfectly complemented by the smoked garlic mash and red cabbage with flavourful jus. I also sampled the roast chicken supreme with pancetta, white beans and colcannon potato cake. Again, really well thought out and prepared with good flavour combinations. Generous portion sizes, just what we wanted on a cold winter's day. Didn't make it to desert but next time... Service was friendly and efficient and prices reasonable for the high quality cooking. Couldn't fault it so a high rating from me and look forward to going back.

Best find on holiday ever!!…read more Set in a beautiful little village with a huge village green with loads of parking round and about (although im sure that on a mid summer sunny day parking may be somewhat difficult!). The pub has a bar area and a restaurant area - we only ever went into the bar as you could eat int here and it was really cosy (dogs are also allowed!). The staff were incredibly friendly and chatty (lets face it, Yorkshire, particularly North Yorkshire folk are possibly the most friendly on the planet - i challenge you to disprove this!). The food was INCREDIBLE. Nothing fancy pants, just really good food, VERY big portions (trust me on this, you dont need three courses - choose your weapon of starter or dessert to go alongside your main - we made the mistake one night and 1) couldnt eat it all and 2)pretty much rolled home). We spent an evening in the pub, had a meal and then sat playing card games - we felt incredibly welcome. So welcome that we ended up visiting three times in a week long holiday. The pub itself isn't as big as it seems from outside, with much of the pub area divided into single-spaced, window-seated tables. The real ale selection is certainly adequate [I've seen better, and much worse, the latter more often], the staff generally nice and helpful, and the real ales being kept fresh.
