Sitting on the deck was nice -- maybe they could get more comfy chairs, but still lovely to sit out there.

In the quest to save money on electricity, the hotel has installed brilliant blue-white LED lights in most room lamps and all bathroom fixtures. Terrible idea. Why is this mentioned? If you're waking up, it's great -- but if you're trying to get some sleep, that frequency of visible light screams "WAKE UP!" Even though you're feeling tired, the light unavoidably wakes up your brain and body. Terrible idea. Hint: put warmer (white light shifted toward the red end of the spectrum) in the lights in the bedroom, and perhaps (if equipped) an overhead light in the loo, so your guests aren't robbed of sleep. Did I mention that this is a terrible idea? Minus one point. 2. The parking slots are on a slight incline. Why does this matter? There is no brake on the luggage carts, and if you're there alone (or solo-loading the bags onto the cart), it's exciting to have to chase the cart as it rolls away -- toward other cars. Unload your vehicle at the hotel entrance, or risk your 50-pound suitcases meeting the nearby expensive-to-fix Mercedes or Beemer. 3. The breakfast buffet: very unexciting. The coffee? Mehhh. Condiments? Almost non-existent. The few dollars in the tip jar? Find a Starbucks or Peet's.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Silver Cloud Hotel in Ruston, and by "pleasure," I…read moremean a full-contact endurance experience. Let's start with the parking lot, which appears to have been designed exclusively for clown cars or perhaps very optimistic compact vehicles. If you're driving anything larger than a shoebox, prepare for a thrilling game of "will this fit," followed by a graceful 17-point turn. The rooms are described as comfortable, which I assume is hospitality code for "cozy if you don't inhale too deeply." Spacious is not a word I would use unless we are comparing it to a broom closet. Now, if you enjoy saunas but wish they came without consent, you're in luck. My heater was stuck at a steady 78 degrees day and night, turning my room into a tropical retreat I never asked for. To their credit, they did move me... to a room where I could enjoy the next feature. Trains. Loud, proud, earth-shaking trains. All day. All night. Not "in the distance" trains, but "is there a locomotive in my hallway" trains. If you've ever wanted to feel like you're sleeping directly on a railroad track, this is your moment. There is technically a water view, which sounds lovely until you realize the parking lot sits right below your window. So when you open the blinds, you're not just enjoying the scenery, you're starring in it. Breakfast was... ambitious. I would have gladly paid extra for something edible, or at least something that didn't feel like it lost a fight with a microwave. After working a very long night, I thought maybe, just maybe, there'd be a small gesture of goodwill like a late checkout. Instead, I was told they had 68 checkouts that day, which apparently made flexibility impossible. No apology, no acknowledgment of the sauna experience, no effort to make it right. Just a firm "time to go." All things considered, I'd rate this stay somewhere between a 1 and a 2 out of 5. I won't be returning, and consider this your friendly warning: if you stay here, bring a small car, earplugs, and a strong sense of humor.

Tough start to the stay was saved by the wonderful food and very professional staff. Menus online…read morewere not updated. No Room service. 30% extra fee charged at checkin for incidentals. I also woke up to a note on my car saying how they did not recognize it and that it would be towed if it wasn't moved so I went to the main office and had to tell them it was me, on top of that it's a busy road with a lot of people speeding and a bad blasting music so good luck getting sleep the room smelt like piss

At first seemed silly to pay hundreds for a B&B that I'd only be sleeping at. Silly maybe, but undoubtably sweeter. My experience of Westwynd is "ya get what ya pay for." As I entered the office the stage was set for the remainder of my experience. The office was saturated with the aroma of nicotine, as were the two kind ladies who assisted me. For $65 plus tax I got a single room which was designated as Non-Smoking but which had been a smoking room for so many years that the smell of nicotine permeated everything. Even my sheets smelled like nicotine so much so that I felt compelled to inspect them further. When I turned down the sheets I found some long hairs interwoven into the fibers. Well, ok, so unsavory to say the least but it was getting late, I wasn't in the mood to start from scratch looking for new accommodations, and my immune system rocks so I pushed that mental image far, far away. Frequent travelers know that lots of economy accommodations that used to be smoking but are now non-smoking were never gutted and remodeled, but I think this one accommodated a litany of non-filter chain smokers. I was glad that I brought incense. The bed was soft and droopy as a squishy cotton ball. Felt like a hammock for about the first two seconds then I realized my back was going to be screaming WTF in the morning. There were no blackout curtains so the street and commercial lights outside glowed throughout the room like a gigantic night light. I think the best way to explain the room's ambiance is to think about crashing at a friend's grandparents' place that hasn't been remodeled since the late 60s or early 70s (these grandparents used to smoke a lot and decorated this guest room with bric-à-brac from their friends' garage sales). The room was clean enough but not spic-n-span. It had a small, clean microwave and a one-person coffee pot. Larger rooms are available with more amenities for families or for those wanting a kitchenette. Westwynd offers no wi-fi. Before I made reservations, I was told that guests often surf on unsecured wi-fi but during my stay I never once found an unsecured connection. None of the local restaurants or establishments offer wi-fi. If you wanna get you some wi-fi, you have to get on the highway and drive. I found no healthy eating options nearby. The only espresso is a bus down the road where I bought an Americano that I wasn't compelled to finish. There is a fruit and produce stand next to the espresso bus, so I shouldn't say there are "no" healthy eating options. Cool if you're vegan, I guess. Feeling conflicted between 2 stars and 3. Westwynd is probably ok if you're cool with traveling on the cheap and ok with what goes along with cheap, but I've definitely had better experiences in economy lodging so I'm giving 2 stars.

Since we've stayed here before, we were pretty clear on what to expect. Check in was smooth, the valet staff were super nice, and we had a fantastic stay. The jacuzzi room is definitely spendy, but we were dead set on it. My husband and I started a tradition a few years ago where we nixed Christmas presents and decided to book 2-3 day vacations instead. With this being our belated gift to each other, we knew we wanted to splurge. I'm fully convinced there isn't a room here that has a bad view. We had sweeping views of the water and once the fog lifted in the morning, it was gorgeous! The jacuzzi tub is a little finicky to get the temperature correct, but once we had that figured out it was great. It takes a bit to fill up (about 20 minutes) so just be ready. Silver Cloud at Ruston definitely is a little on the pricier side, but it's entirely worth it in my opinion!

Maybe the best bed I've slept on in a hotel and I'm comparing to 5 star and 5 diamond resorts. Simply so comfy from the mattress to the pillows to the bedding. Top notch. The only recommendation I would make is for the staff to use fragrance free detergent. Aside from that, the beds are perfection. The rooms are CLEAN. I am very particular about cleanliness and usually base my hotel choice on who has the best reputation. This place was spotless daily. Love the two little windows that open in the rooms. It is so nice to have fresh air come in to the room. The gym is very nice. New, clean equipment, a nice bathroon, and filtered water available. The downsides- Only valet available. If you're like me and come and go all day, just park in the structure across the street during the day. Valet at night. No room service. This isn't the end of the world. Call the restaurant downstairs to ask for take away. They are sweet and have things ready quickly.
