Epic spot to take in the beautiful Chihuahuan Desert. On a clear night perfect spot for stargazing. Mysterious lights are a bonus. I saw some lights flickering in the haze on the horizon. My daughter who had agreed to drive across Texas on her spring break said I was hallucinating. Nonetheless the lights do appear from time to time. I have my own theories that it is light reflection phenomenon that happens due to unique and rapid changes in temperature in the flat desert surrounded by high mountains. Are the light extraterrestrial? Maybe.... The observation area has plenty of parking and maintained restrooms. Get here an hour before sunset as the desert sunset is beautiful and parking fills up as plenty of tourists want to check this out. If you don't see the mysterious lights you will still have a beautiful view of the desert and starry sky without ANY light pollution.

This was probably the main reason why we went to Marfa (aside from trying Convenience West BBQ, that was my idea). My bf was eagerly anticipating it. I was down for it, too! During the day this spot serves as a rest stop with restrooms and tables/benches to sit down on. We also came in the day to eat some of the food we purchased at Convenience West. We had the place to ourselves for most of the time. You'll see a lot of people gather around the area in hopes of seeing the lights when the sun starts going down. There's no guarantee you'll see the lights. Even if you don't, you'll get a great view of the stars and in some cases a few planets. There's a few telescopes near the restrooms. Those get taken pretty quickly so you'll probably have to sit in the dirt or near your car, unless you come early. I'd suggest taking a blanket and/or chairs to sit near the dirt. Take a flashlight too because it's very dark. It also gets a little bit chilly so that's why I say to take a blanket. A light sweater or jacket will also work. I'm happy to say we saw some golden, blinking lights a few times! We even saw a shooting star! I hadn't seen one of those in years! It was awesome and made the trip worth it! There's different theories on what the lights actually are. A lot of people from different cities and even countries have tried studying these mysterious lights. The lights were first seen in 1883 by a cowboy named Robert Reed Ellison. He thought they were Apache Indian campfires. Apache Indians thought they were stars dropping to the earth. The mystery of these lights remains unsolved. People were there from different cities in Texas. I also saw people with Virginia plates. It's cool! I would say check it out at least once in life and plus it's free! They say the best things in life are free and this might just be one of them. It's also kid friendly! I have a teenager so he wasn't digging the idea of coming to Marfa and didn't join us.

The only night we stayed in the area in May of 2023 was raining, so we didn't get a chance to experience this phenomenon, but on the way to El Paso, we stopped by the actual complex built to observe the Marfa Lights and were pleasantly surprised. Somehow I imagined it much more primitive built platform without any kind of signage. Instead it was clearly marked a mile ahead from each direction you are approaching to the viewpoint. Once we arrived we were stunned how large this complex is, including restrooms, somewhat shaded area and the viewpoint further in the back. Money well spent. It was a nice 10-15 min break with some walking around and observing the surroundings.

You get what you put in belief-wise with a visit here. I don't know about the "Building a mystery"...and how "Mysterious" the "Lights" of Marfa, TX really are, but it is a fun place to stop and watch the dusk overtake the horizon of the Chihuahuan desert. There is a bit of mystical whimsy as you see dots of light pop up along the horizon-line and whether or not they can be explained as car lights on a far off distant road is up for debate. But, in the cool, quiet solitude of the desert in the night, it is easy to get caught up in the dancing orbs of light as they sporadically dot the opaque sky. Especially on a starless/moonless night, when they pop up and disappear, they seem very mysterious, indeed! Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area or driving through at sunset. The bathroom facilities are actually pretty decent, but parking is a bit limited.

This viewing spot is located just on the outskirts of Marfa. It's a really cool building that's round in shape and house bathroom facilities. Also a lovely area with viewers to watch the lights. We were lucky enough to see these mysterious and unexplainable lights. It was a really neat experience sitting in the dark in the heart of the desert watching these lights. To me it doesn't matter if there is a legit explanation or not because it's just part of the entire Marfa experience that I wouldn't have traded for anything.

One of the super bright lights we watched float and flash across the field.

In addition to serving as Marfa's courthouse, it is a landmark and historical building. We took a stroll around the courthouse on a Thursday afternoon and everything inside is tidy and clean. The main attraction is walking up to the roof of the courthouse. You'll have to climb several sets of stairs, including winding staircases, until you reach the top. As you get close, there are some photos on the wall that show what Marfa looked like in the 1920's. Cool to see how life was during those times with horse-drawn buggies and such. Once you reach the top, you are gifted a panoramic view of the town of Marfa. The courthouse is centrally located so you're in the perfect position. A great place to snap some photos. At night, the courthouse lit up but my best guess is that these were installed for the holidays and that they are not a nightly occurrence.

He is very passionate about his theories about what happened during and after the war. He claims to have all kinds of documentation but doesn't display or present any of it. Of course there's nothing wrong with this, but some of the stories he spins are a little bit hard to swallow. I am not saying they're untrue because I don't know, but let's just say it's the first time I've heard some of the ideas he presents. Depending on your perspective he could sometimes get a little bit offensive at times, but like I said, he's one of a kind so you have to let that just roll off your back. I walked in unprepared for the presentation, but enjoyed listening to him talk for 30+ minutes without even taking a breath. I really wanted to ask him about his ships and the models he built, but he didn't give me a chance. I wish I had more time because I'm sure we could've had a great conversation if he ever let me ask a question. Take this review as either an invitation or a warning depending upon your mindset. I enjoyed the visit as entertaining.

We mentioned to the staff that our bread was stale to see if we could get a fresher one but they said it's because it supposed to be like a crouton/ toast. We have had many croutons and toasts in our lives ofcourse that didn't feel and taste like stale bread but we just took it as a funny part of our Marfa stop experience. It appears to have settled into a more predictable groove. Of course, the reason for this town's fame is Donald Judd's Chinati Foundation. I do my infrequent pilgrimage to Chinati for one reason: to see his '100 untitled works in mill aluminum.' I like choosing the open viewing versus the guided tour option because it gives me time to walk among the aluminum blocks undisturbed in relative silence with no time limit. The sun's angle hit different pieces producing different angles of contrast and shimmer. Being in these two buildings is like standing in a mash up of a cathedral and an after-hours machine shop. So many get frustrated with Donald Judd's work. They place demands on what it all means and they walk out dismissively when enlightenment doesn't happen. I toss out my brain and my thoughts. I don't come here to figure anything out. I walk the aisles and just breathe it all in. It's soothing and gratifying; part of the spiritual reset that Chinati and Marfa can do. P.S. Chinati still doesn't allow photography inside their buildings or galleries. I visited once when a rare exception was made. Almost every other art institution in North America allows non-flash photography. It's time for Chinati to allow for the same.

They do have a small menu for breakfast. But lunch and dinner is a meal the chef chooses and that is all there is. You will be sitting at a group table with other guests. We never had the lunch so I can't speak on that. The dinners we did. Now the dinner were good BUT after the cost, service fee and tip that automatically get charged, each dinner for each person is $95, both nights the severed a stater soup, main plate and a dessert. $95 seemed high to me. I strongly recommend bring your own snack and a small ice chest. There are no refrigerators in the room. I think the owners suite does have a refrigerator but that is over 2k a night and is the owners suite when he wants to be there. So he makes sure he has comforts. There are NO TVs in any room. There is a media room that has a TV and then again the owners suite has a TV. Again the owner has these small comforts. There was not enough hot water for a whole shower. We booked an ATV tour which on the website they say they have side by side and single rider ATV for this tour. I personally didn't want to drive an ATV I wanted my husband to drive and their site said they had a side by side. Well they do have a side by side but they said no to taking it out for the ATV tour. We also booked the mountain tour, which is in there open air Humvee. BUT their hunters vehicles down so the hunting group got the mountain tour Humvee and we were stuck in the side by side for our mountain tour. We had the driver, us and another couple, so 5 people. The side by side had no business and was uncomfortable having 5 people in this side by side for the tour. But then going down the mountains in the side by side the brakes went out and we had to wait for a ride back. Now the Marfa sky's are amazing and Cibolo has a big telescope but apparently has not work for many many months. I feel the owner needs to pony up some funds, make sure the vehicles are in working order. Have a side by side that can be used for ATV tours like there website states. Fix the telescope. Make sure what ever the hot water problem was is fixed. But some small refrigerators in the rooms at the least. But overall the property was amazing and we will stay at again but the owner needs to do better.

The response was "OK then, we will cancel your dinner." First hidden clue - no food after 6:30 PM. So - with NO DINNER, we stopped at the St. George in Marfa - and had a dinner and texted and said we would be there around 9:00. The return text said the front desk closes at 6:00 PM. Second clue this is a B&B. When we arrived, finally, there are no lights anywhere. We could barely find the turn off - then up a dirt road for several miles in total blackness. Then the outline of a building - again no lights, not signage, nothing. We walked to what appeared to be a front door and found someone who said "welcome." They took our luggage to our room. In the room, a notice that everything has a 15% service fee - just because. More hidden info. Third clue. In the morning, we skipped the shower and left as fast as we could. But the pain was not over. We had to lug our heavy wheeled bags through a long parking lot - gravel - like pulling your luggage on a beach. Nobody to help. As we were loading the car, an employee, in almost total darkness, drove past the rear of our car so fast she almost hit us. Fourth clue. This place is NOT a resort. It is NOT a hotel. This is a B&B and a crappy one at that. If you want resort outdoor experiences, check out Paws Up or Orvis Lodges in Montana. And they have no hidden messages.
