The 10th Cavalry - Buffalo Soldiers were posted here and made their mark in West Texas. The first bAfrican American to graduate West Point LT Henry Flipper was also posted here. They have a museum in the visitor center, but the entire site is the museum. There are exhibits, interactive activities. Hey, the Junior Ranger program is for everyone, not just kids . For the outdoorsy, the historic site also has some hiking. We took the short hike up the hills to the top to view the down upon the site. It's not a big place, but we spent a good two hours there, and didn't see all of it. There was much more hiking to do, so if I were in the area again I'd be interested in how an undressed (for Xmas) Fort Davis NHS would look Recommended.

First, Dad is elderly and walks quite slowly (without picking up his feet much). Because of this, we didn't walk the perimeter to check out the officer quarters. But we checked out the main visitor center, including the replica barracks for enlisted soldiers. At the time of our visit, a resident expert volunteer was there to answer questions. We also stopped by the small theater to watch a short documentary on the history of Fort Davis. It was quite informative and entertaining, especially since it was narrated by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Finally, the dude running the place (he's from New Jersey and I think his name is Michael) was phenomenal -- not only when I called to inquire about whether my elderly father could get around, but also while we were there. In fact, I also witnessed him assist several other visitors with the utmost professionalism. If you're within 100 miles of this place, you owe it to yourself to visit. As a bonus, you'll find a jillion historical markers along the way, not to mention a scenic drive.

There is FREE WIFI at the Visitors Center so we unwinded a bit on the couches. Dog friendly so we were able to bring the pups inside. Free coffee. The college girl working was so nice and friendly. I was on the phone with Expedia for an hour and she told me I could go in the quite conference room to work out my call. All the brochures and information you need for around the area. Sign in at the digital station and receive a feee bumper sticker. At least I got one for doing so. We didn't ask for any recommendations so I can't comment on that, however maybe use yelp or trip advisor if your unsure (as per a previous yelpers complaint). Definitely stop here if you need a rest on the comfy couches, free wifi, or information about the surrounding areas.

To get to the actual viewing area, go East from Marfa on US-90 and you'll see it off the highway on the right. There's a nice roadside building with a parking lot, bathrooms, a few signs on the strange history of the lights, and a nice viewing platform with some built-in binoculars. There's plenty of space for people to stand or sit, some people even sat out camp chairs, but it is open air so be prepared if it's cooler or windy (we were freezing over New Year's with the wind gusts)! The Marfa Lights are such a cool mystery in West Texas and I'm so glad we stopped here on our way back from the McDonald Observatory's star party, even if we didn't get to see the mysterious lights for ourselves... "I want to believe!"

The Lights are supposedly not like the Aurora Borealis which I have seen. They have been described as glowing orbs. I have heard many unusual and some humorous possible explanations, but there are still only theories... I took my girls with me on 2.16.2025 to try to catch a glimpse. Our luck was non-existent. I encourage you to visit The Marfa Mystery Lights Viewing Area, a few miles outside of Marfa, TX. And I know many folks won't have time to do this, but visit the viewing area during operating hours, then return a bit before sunset for the possibility of a light show. It's well-kempt all year long for prayers, retreats, and wedding ceremonies. We touched nothing except the main door which was tightly closed. I hope others do the same. The architecture and decor match the landscape - minimalistic yet aesthetically-pleasing. I encourage you to read the websites below for some history of the chapel and the surrounding area. The Courthouse is, by far, the tallest building in Marfa, and the cupola room at the top (not handicap accessible) affords such a picaresque view that it's well worth the climb (the building has an elevator to floors 1-3, which house various offices, but the design of the upstairs doesn't really leave room for an elevator.) Beautiful woodwork and antique furniture are lovely, too. And, beyond the aesthetics/tourist experience, I can vouch for the services as well. The County Clerk was exceptionally friendly and prompt in helping me look up some records in the vault. NOTE: City services are in a separate building a short distance away - Marfa City Hall, also on Highland.

Drove down this road from Marfa to Ruidosa with the Tacoma two days ago (end of October). Tara's…read moredirections were spot on. The first (close to) 30 miles are actually paved highway, FM 2810. It then turns into county road 10, a gravel road. Which was in pretty good shape -- the roughest part are the 10 miles that go through Pinto Canyon Ranch, followed by another 10 miles or so of nicer gravel road. While I enjoyed putting the Taco into 4WD for better handling, I think that most regular clearance vehicles would be just fine if you know how to drive on those roads, it's dry, and you take your time. Definitely fine for something like an Outback or Forester. I passed one Kia van-style vehicle, which eventually caught up with me while I was enjoying a Lonestar at the General Store (aka Hot Springs Airport) in Ruidosa. No other vehicles encountered. Took me about 1.5 hrs, just like Google Maps had suggested. Pretty views, but not nearly as exciting as I had expected... :) Lastly, I drove back to Marfa via Presidio. But without actually going into town in Presidio, just staying on the highway. In hindsight, that seemingly took longer and was quite boring, I should have just gone back the way I came. ;-)

We picked up a couple of sandwiches, some chips and soda before heading out of Fort Davis for the 2 hour Scenic Loop Drive with a plan to stop and enjoy a picnic along the way at one of the picnic tables along the loop. What a beautiful afternoon we spent weaving our way through the majestic Davis Mountains region! Thank you so much for embracing your regions natural resource and planting stops along the way so that visitors could discover the beauty of God's country up close and personal. MUST SEE/DO!!
