I got violently sick after eating here. After that I don't recommend you eating here. I was told at the ER that most likely the food temperatures were not maintained and bacteria formed. I don't know how they get the good reviews that are posted and no bad reviews as there is plenty of room for bad reviews at this place. BEWARE as this is not a good place to eat. read more

It doesn't look like much outside or inside, but WOW, what a perfect meal. Crab-stuffed mushrooms were one of the best appetizers I've ever enjoyed. My NY strip was cooked to perfection, one of the top three restaurant steaks I've ever had (and I used to travel a lot for work and dine at some fine & famous steakhouses). The sides were excellent and the dessert was divine. Low-key friendly and attentive service, too. Just a really pleasant evening with good friends and GREAT food. read more

You will simply never believe this place is as good as it is. You'll pull into the parking lot and swear you're at the wrong place. But, you're right where you want to be! You really need to call ahead. They aren't built for major dinner traffic but all I worry about is ME! The menu is simple. Steak, chicken ( I think) and tilapia. You're there for the steak. You have a choice of two steaks. Big and massive. The one you see is, I think, their eight ounce ; that's the small one. Get it medium rare. Get the sautéed mushrooms and baked potato. Oh, yeah ... and salad with the house dressing ( balsamic vinaigrette) You won't find a better steak anywhere and I've done steakhouses from San Francisco to Dallas to Denver, D.C., Boston, NYC, and more. Another HOME RUN steak by the Maples. Let me just comment on one of the other reviews... Someone criticized the price - $69 for a 16oz steak and $154 for a family of 3... and it "wasn't Downtown"... then criticized the restrooms.. First - let me get the laughter out of the way.. :'-D Let me ask you this: what is your average expense to drive from the south hills to a downtown steakhouse? Average distance, say, 20 Miles (oneway)?... 1) Gas (roundtrip): $15-20 2) Tolls (given you take 43): $5-7 3) Parking: $5-15 4) Burdon of Personal Time - 30-45min each way.. 1.5h total, conservatively, say $50 per couple.. 5) Intangible cost - DUI risk, babysitter, traffic ticket risk, stress of driving for 45min plus... etc Conservative Total: $75-92 per couple per TRIP to the City! NOT EVEN INCLUDING ANYTHING REGARDING DINNER! And you're complaining about the best overall streak dinner in all of the tristate area costing $69 per head (salad and giant baked potato included!)? WOW... you're clearly well thought out... :) Grow up my friend... maybe the illusion to you of eating in "the city" is this amazing thing and well worth that cost... but take it from someone who has lived years in each of New York City, Chicago, Miami, Boston, Hartford, and Providence... Best filet mignon I have ever eaten anywhere. It's perfect every single time and it comes out on a sizzling plate with butter sauce. Oh my.

I refuse to adjust my comment due to the fact that a moron has said something about me. Apparently I over stepped when I gave them 3 star for an over priced steak. A lot of people would like to know the prices. I have been to many steak places and did not find my steak at Maples to be better then a an ordinary steak at outback steak house. My husband had heard about "The Maples" ....a little throw-back SteakHouse in Charleroi, Pa.. He immediately decided we also had to try this "diamond in the rough so to speak", just to see what all the fuss was about. The recommendation had come from a respected "self proclaimed" Foodie friend of ours, he said in fact that the filet he had gotten was one of the finest he'd ever eaten. The filet, my personal favorite cut of meat, was said to rival any other. So, true to our nature we had to get there ASAP. My husband and I having eaten at some of the finest steakhouses in world for work, combined with our vacation get-away's, including major cities, cruises and resorts. We had to see for ourselves. So with reservations for 3 couples, I have to admit we were anxious to get there. As some other reviewer's have stated; it doesn't look like much on the outside, but you walk in and the place is adorable! A very comfortable atmosphere, very friendly service. Our waitress was extremely attentive. I won't go into details but the bartender even went over and above to make my evening perfect. The menu is simple, but enough of a choice for everyone. I got my filet mignon med-rare, a baked potato loaded with sour cream and butter, and some crabmeat on the side--it was fantastic. My husbands meal also very good. All at the table enjoyed every bite and I don't honestly believe there was a bite left on any plate when we finished. Did I mention clean? It was the cleanest restaurant I've ever been in. So clean I found myself looking for something to be out of place. The chef came out to talk to us, and I swear when we left half the staff said goodbye, now if that doesn't make you want to drive on down to Charleroi, Pa. for a good steak dinner then I don't know what more I could say! We absolutely loved our experience and we-will certainly be back, and not just to retrieve the scarf that I left on the back of my chair either. Which by the way, the waitress called us to say it had been left behind. We had enough time to turn right around but we were in a caravan headed on to the next water hole. My strip steak was cooked to perfection and was juicy and delicious...no salt or sauce necessary. My wife got the filet and have never seen a more perfectly cooked filet. This place is a treasure! Absolutely love the crab stuffed mushroom appetizer. The crab is plentiful and in such huge chunks! For the entree, I always get the filet mignon which is always cooked just right and comes out literally sizzling. The side of sautéed mushrooms is a must - they're so buttery and rich; the perfect side to the steak. It starts with a fresh salad of crisp mixed greens and fresh tomatoes and cucumbers; the house dressing is great. Even the rolls here are delicious! I've also tried the sautéed orange roughy. The Maples in Charleroi PA is by far my favorite restaurant. The staff are the nicest people you could ever ask for. They make you feel like family and that to me means just as much as having amazing food. The quality of the food at The Maples is top notch. The crab stuffed mushrooms have the most amazing taste and I still can not find any other restaurant to compare. The jumbo shrimp were so fresh it felt as if they were right from the ocean to my plate. The filet by far is the best steak you will ever have in your life. I have been to The Capital Grill, Morton's, Ruth Chris, The Georgetown, and numerous other places. None can come close to comparing to the perfectly cooked, seasoned and flavor of the Filet at The Maples. I drive over and hour each month just for this experience and it is completely worth it. The Maples is a small family owned business with a giant heart. If you want amazing food at a great price then the drive is completely worth it. Very highly recommended. read more

This place has been around for a long, long time and the Family who originally operated this business took pride not only in the food they served but, their also in their reputation in the community, as being decent, hard-working, fair and generous business owners, who treated their employees kindly, as well. I don't believe they would have tolerated an employer taking their waitresses tips, for a minute and would have terminated the unbelievably greedy, and possibly illegal practice, the second they became aware of it. Waitresses rely on tips and have to report a percentage of the total of every check total belonging to every customer he/she waits on and when you (the owner) takes their tips, you're basically forcing them to work for next to nothing. At $2.07 an hour, if a customer spent $50 and stayed for 1 hour, when your waiter/waitress was done serving that customer, they would OWE (be in the hole) the IRS $3 since you took the tip and they are working only for an hourly wage. Even if you paid them $10 an hour, they still have to claim 10% of every check (since the government assumes they make at least that in a tip) which would mean they would make $5 hour for serving that customer, which isn't even half of minimum wage, and they still have no tips to make-up for this financial loss and lack of a minimum wage pay rate, which too is illegal. But, legality aside...how cheap or greedy could you possibly be to take your waitresses tips? I wouldn't eat at your restaurant for that reason alone. And, I use to entertain business colleagues there during the holidays in excess of 100 people...when the previous owners operated the establishment and I knew a $1,500 tip was going home with the waiters/waitresses who served us. read more

The Maples has been around since the 30's and my parents have started recently going there. My parents kept telling me how they have the best steaks they've ever had. Sure, I'm a skeptic. I've eaten steak at a lot of places...some good, some bad, some fantastic. I'm going to put The Maples' steak up there with fantastic. Sure, it's a little on the pricey side, but most steak joints charge you only for the steak and all of the sides are extra. The price included the steak, salad, and side of choice (potato, veggie, pasta). The steak is served on a searing hot platter with a side of butter. My steak was juicy enough that it didn't need the butter. I always order my steak 'medium' - I think the steak comes out about medium-rare and finishes cooking on the platter. It's so hot, the butter was bubbling! Everything is homemade and the staff is eager to please. The chef stopped at our table to ask about our meals and to introduce himself. So, you don't have to go into the city to find a good steak. You can actually find one in the Mon Valley. Who knew?! read more

What am I missing? Seriously, are their two Maples near Charleroi?! The steak was OK. Nothing special. Pretty much take a good piece of beef and fry it on the grill. No seasoning. Serve it on a sizzling plate. Not close to worth the price. Not even close to what I would expect for $25 let alone $50. We had mushrooms for an app. $20 for 3 mushrooms with canned crabmeat on them. Again, nothing special. Nothing a novice cook couldn't replicate with three store bought ingredients from Walmart. Not something I'm going out of my way for. I'd price this less than $10. Atmosphere was a reminder of what the restaurants in the early eighties must have looked like. Thing is nothing has really changed since. Wide open square room with cheap plastic flowers on the wall. Restrooms needed cleaned. There were live flying gnats at the urinal. There were cob webs on the ceiling. Server looked to be a teenage girl with minimal experience. She failed to keep drinks full and had a bad habit of handing us the plates instead of serving us food. At a chain restaurant with a full table I don't mind. When I go to a place noted for quality that carries a premium price, I don't expect to have to help the server at a table of two. She was friendly. The cook/owner was friendly. It just wasn't the serving atmosphere for a place with this type of advertising. Beer was cheap. $3 for a domestic. I'll give them that for a positive. For over $100 for two people in the middle of nowhere I expected great good or a minimum great atmosphere. I got neither. read more

Its always a well cut steak and the the choices for the sides are well picked, it includes a salad, two rolls and either a veggie or baked potato which is filling and just enough. This place deserves 5 stars, and owners go above and beyond to please their customers, its always a friendly atmosphere and they make you feel right at home. You aren't at a place and being waited on by 2 or more waitresses, this is more personal. After hearing legendary hype of this restaurant and having a reservation I was long awaiting and looking forward to I have to say I'm left completely disappointed. With such a small menu but 'legendary' steak you would assume the doneness level of their 'signature' item would be well versed. Not so to my dismay. The crab stuffed mushrooms were a well cooked but lacking in flavor appetizer. The signature of the steak is I guess it being on a hot iron plate sizzling in butter but the difference between medium rare/rare to medium is a significant one. Somehow a dinner companion achieve medium well as requested. I learned under Le Corden Bleu culinary training standards myself that medium is the choice doneness for a good cut of beef. I was offered to have it thrown back under the broiler as I was clearly dissatisfied. What's the point?! The cost might be justified if they were capable of cooking to proper doneness the first time around. Beyond let down. I went to the Maples last night and sat at the bar, the had just hired a new bartender and it was her first day, we took a friend there for his birthday dinner and they had the steak and I had the chicken parm, let me tell you, the new girl did fantastic and the owners were very pleasant.
