Us girls needed something creamy and cold after a steamy day in Natchez. So of course tik tok told us the nichest place to go, the malt shop. Small little establishment, very cute. No where to park (BEWARE FIRST TIME CUSTOMERS) So we just went through the drive through. We pull up without knowing what to get (I know, my bad). We asked the **thrilled** employee working there what she would recommend. She suggest butterscotch (didn't elaborate further). She didn't have the best personality, but she got the job done. I ordered ice cream in a cup and the friend ordered a pineapple milkshake. The portion of ice cream was unfathomable. It was probably equal to a WHOLE carton of ice cream. So much so that I had to dump out majority of it in the parking lot of some government building (sorry!!). Friend liked the shake, but mentioned that it had hints of lactaid. I was done with the ice cream in under 10 minutes after it dripped everywhere. They do no offer toppings for the plain soft serve whatsoever. So who in their right mind can just eat mounds of straight vanilla?!?! My Diet Coke made up for the ice cream however I had only about two sips of it because of how much ice they put in it. There is a very good reason why this Malt Shop has been around for so many years, it's delicious! On our visit on a particularly hot hot and humid day this ice cream is exactly what we needed to cool down. We were only in town for a short while but my husband, a Natchez native, raves about his childhood memories of coming to the Malt Shop as a special treat. Excellent service with a slight wait (10 or so minutes). Workers were very friendly. Fries are ok. Onion rings are awesome! Burgers come dressed with Mayo, lettuce, tomato and pickles- they are decent. Strawberry shake was good and has real strawberries in it. Would definitely try again and recommend to others. read more

Nice friendly folks. Quick service. Milkshakes was short on flavor of butterscotch malt , thin/runny and very cold,good. I know orders can get mixed up. Hburger was ok but my hot dog with chili and cheese was a spicy, mystery meat. That cost $5 instead of $2 50. We could have had a better meal for nearly $20. Nobody died or got sick. This place is really cool and old school; it felt like a time capsule from the 1950s. I came here twice during my stay, as I can't resist a burger! The first time I did the drive through and then waited in my car for the order. The second time I called ahead, which I would recommend, so you don't have to wait. I got the regular burger the first time, but upgraded to the larger one the second time; the regular one is pretty small, specifically the amount of patty that is in it. I'm in Heaven!! It's not easy finding old fashioned ice cream shops since many towns are replaced with Braum's and other chain ice cream stores these days. Finding this original ice cream and burger joint was one of the best parts of my trip to Natchez. THE BUTTERSCOTCH MALT IS AMAZING! You have the option to add chopped pecans and wow...it's a must! I wish I could get this close to home, it was the best malt ever. The Malt Shop has a very extensive food menu, not just burgers and fries. Everything is super inexpensive. I had the BLT and fries- very good! Everyone else in my group got a burger and loved it. It's a small A-framed building with a walk-up window, so don't expect to go inside and sit down. There is one picnic table in front that will seat 7-8 people on each side, but that's it. It has a drive-thru as well, but they cook to order, so you probably want to call ahead. A must if you're visiting or live in the town! Can't beat the prices or the taste for this kind of place! read more

What a classic. I don't know when this place first opened but it looks like the Fonz could have visited here. We had a root beer float, hot fudge Sunday, chocolate malt and a banana split. What a treat. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day. While we were there, a couple with their children were having what looked like fried catfish and French fries. If you are looking to sit down inside don't come here. Seating is limited to one picnic table. They do a steady take out business. It's rare you find malts on the menu these days. Nothing fancy to making a malt. Just add a spoonful of malted milk powder to a shake and wah lah. I like them. I had a couple of chili dogs for lunch. They were simple things. Well put together but nothing too fancy. The weenie had never been to New York City. The chili had never been to Texas. The bun was off the bottom shelf of the Piggly Wiggly. The onions were cold crisp fresh chopped Bermuda's. You could eat one in three bites outta one hand while riding a bicycle. The meaty chili held the onions tight and rode the weenie well. The place wasn't spic n span clean but the chili dog tasted fine and whenever that sweet heat would crawl up the back of your throat the creamy cold malted would ease the pain and soothe the senses. The fried po boys and shrimp plates looked good. Prices are reasonable. Don't come in here all liquored up and expect to eat. It's not that kind of place. read more

Just to cite one experience in particular, however -- I walked up to the window to place my order. Your employee never bothered to look up from the order form to acknowledge me. Further, her demeanor was nonchalant and her comments were fairly terse. Neither did she show any appreciation for me doing business there. In a climate where there are a) plenty of options for purchasing food and b) where customer service is the new marketing, that's patently unacceptable. Also, not accepting credit cards in an era where platforms like Square make doing very affordable seems incongruous and out of step with the times. There's plenty of evidence to support the fact that accepting cards will increase average order value and, in my case, would mean that I visit with greater frequency (I NEVER carry cash; who does anymore?). If it's part of The Malt Shop's "schtick," I get that. But from a purely retail perspective, enforcing a high standard of customer service among your employees and accepting common forms of payment just makes sense. Please understand -- my motive for sharing what may appear to be a harsh critique is not to besmirch the Malt Shop. Rather, it's because I appreciate local small businesses and desire to be loyal to them. When given the option, I'd much prefer buying from you than a chain outfit. I know you've been in business for years and are well-loved in this community. Not having my business won't make a dent in your bottom line. The Malt Shop in Natchez MS is something my family and I look forward to each time we visit the area. Which is about 3 times a year. It's like you are stepping back in time when you pull up to this place . My favorite is the Butterscotch Malt. When you receive your Malt (no matter how hot it is outside) you can taste the ice crystals in it. I can't wait until out next trip to Natchez and the Malt Shop here. read more
