I used to ALWAYS stop by this shop on my way home to NELA for fresh goodness! However, after my most recent trip I will NOT be going back!!!! I was greeted with "We only have......."! All I could say was "Wow"! GREAT customer service has truly become a lost art! In an already declining economy, you would want to ensure every interaction with a customer is TOP TIER!!!!! This place has been a stable and part of our trips growing up to go visit my family back home. These donuts are the better than Krispy Kreme! I've come back home a few times and they were closed so on this past Sunday when I came to town I had to stop! They have repainted and I like the new packaging it's those simple touches that make a difference. The customer service was great nothing like southern hospitality on a Sunday morning. It wasn't hot or cold so it was nice outside. The wait wasn't long and they had the jams playing in the background. This made my inner child happy and of course I'll be back! read more

I must admit- I'm not a big sweets eater. With that being said, I fully intend to make the pastries from this local Natchez bakery a part of my diet every once in a while. I think I pass through Natchez a few times a year. This blue building will be a place I stop when traveling. The staff was friendly and patient with this "non-local" customer and her best friend who took a little longer to figure out what they wanted to eat. Drove 30 minutes because it said they were open at 6 on Sunday to discover they are NOT open. Grrr

There seems to be an issue with getting product in the showcases. I understand that there may not be full cases right at opening but when there are varieties of sprinkled donuts but not a single glazed donut or donut hole to be found, there is an issue. There should be glazed donuts before some of the larger "specialty" items and if there are chocolate sprinkled donuts in the case, there could be donut holes. Donuts Shmonuts! Don't be fooled by the name of this place. Go for the hot tamales! We stopped in for a quick snack when passing through Natchez. I glimpsed the sign that said Big Papas hot tamales and we made a quick u turn! Their hot tamales were small but ever so tasty! Perfectly seasoned, nice and spicy. The cornmeal masa was delicious. Nice clean picnic tables out front to eat at. Only regret was not getting more! read more

This is a donut stand and you have to wait in line outside which is fine, but you have to time it with the weather and what not. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is because the wait can be long sometimes due to the line and slowness of workers. It's frequented by locals and they offer more than donuts! Don't do it! I ordered a cinnamon roll and was glad they didn't try to give me the one with the power cord in it. When I tried to taste it, the icing was very thick and it tasted so sour that I had to spit it out. My friend ordered the breakfast biscuit, which took several minutes, but it was ice cold. I was out doing a little southeastern-usa-ride thing on my bike - kinda going out from Atlanta and riding in a big circle through the big heated area south of the Mason Dixon. A L_O_N_G day of riding found me in Natchez, MS ... still a couple of hours south of my goal for the day and with an extremely sore butt. I started looking for places to take a break when, stopping at a light, I saw this place over to the right. A light bulb went off in my head and I remembered that Alton Brown featured this place on season 2 of "Feasting on Asphalt". As those seasons were a large inspiration for the rides I try to do -- I had to try it. I'm just SO glad I did. This -- this is road food. Just a tiny shop on the side of a busy intersection selling perfectly cooked food. I waddled up to the window and ordered two donuts; a chocolate glaze and bavarian cream filled. I asked the guy at the window if I could leave the bike where it was and if there was a place to sit -- he gave me a broad smile, invited me to just hang out and pointed me to two old picnic benches on the side of the building. I gathered my donuts (and two sodas to wash them down) and sat down. The chocolate was just perfect. Melted into the top of the donut so it didn't flake off when I bit into it -- and quickly melting over my fingers. The bavarian brought something new to the table. Unlike "normal" donuts where it's just a large pastry with cream injected into the middle - this was a normal O shaped donut with the cream fried into the center hole. Of course, it was also utterly divine. The picnic benches were a nice place to relax and people watch. The place seemed primarily to be a "drive up and go" -- I was the only one sitting to eat - but I was impressed by the diversity of clientele. The businessman with dry cleaning hanging in the back of the Lexus on his way home grabbed a couple of boxes of donuts followed by a minivan mom with half a dozen kids piling in and out of the car. Forget the chains and grocery store bakeries. The Donut Shop gives dives a whole new reputation. We stopped here at the end of a July 4th road trip through Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. It turned out to be one of the culinary highlights of the vacation -- if not the year. When you see this faded blue metal structure sitting at an odd angle on Natchez' busiest road, you'll be tempted to keep driving. Don't! When you pull in to the cracked asphalt parking lot, you might have second thoughts. Just put them out of your head and run -- don't walk -- to the ordering counter. Atmosphere/Service Yep. The place is officially a dive. It has only outdoor seating (covered tables). But the tables are spotless and the seating is plentiful. ~ We were 'foreigners' (Texans) and the line was building behind us on a Sunday morning, but the ladies behind the window answered every question with a smile. Couldn't ask for more. The Food My wife ordered the 'Pinecone.' It's similar to a 'Bear Claw' but bigger and more sinful. It was the perfect way to wrap up a week of off-the-diet eating. Our 6-year-old had the chocolate-iced (I didn't try one, but he devoured them). I ordered a dozen plain-glazed and a half-dozen hot tamales. ~ The plain-glazed were fresh from the cooker. Lightly crisp on the outside with a fluffy interior. All donuts should be this good. I ate six of them and conveniently neglected to check my blood glucose levels afterward. (Why bother?) ~ The tamales are Mississippi-style -- spicy, heavy on the meat/light on the masa and seasoned heavily with cumin. They are served similarly to the way hot links are presented in Texas: with saltines and Louisiana-style hot sauce. While they aren't as toothsome as Texas-style tamales, they are well-flavored. I even added some hot sauce and scooped some up with crackers and ... I think I get it. Bottom Line If you don't bother to stop here, you deserve nothing more than a mediocre fried piece of dough. If you do heed my advice, you'll be glad you did. ~ By the way, we hear that the burgers (presented on house-made buns) are the bomb. I'd have waited another hour to try one, but the six-year-old was on a sugar high and we had another 6 hours ahead of us and ... you traveling parents know where I'm coming from. read more

The glazed donut here is the best I have ever had. I came here twice during my stay and tried a cream donut and Mardi Gras one, as well as a kolache. I had never had a kolache before, so not sure how it ranks with others, but it was good. The highlight here is definitely the donuts, obviously.
