Paid deposit, then months of silence. My fiancée and I booked The Makeup Bar (Rocklin) in July 2025 for our mid-2026 wedding and paid just under $3,000 upfront. Since then, communication has effectively stopped. For the past ~2 months (approaching 3) we've received no responses to multiple emails and voicemail messages, despite repeated attempts to confirm details and next steps for our wedding date. At this point we have no clear confirmation that services will be provided and multiple links on their website are broken. The contract we received focuses heavily on client payment requirements, but does not clearly explain what happens if the vendor fails to deliver or becomes unreachable, which has made this especially stressful while planning a wedding. I wanted to share this so other couples factor in the current lack of communication before booking. Loved the location and studio itself, had lots of great natural lighting. The gal who did my hair was so kind and easy to talk to! And was listening to what I liked/didn't like and made me feel comfortable. UPDATE: Instead of a(n) apology, response, or even refund for the horribleness I had to pay for, they blocked me on all channels. TL;DR: This place is horrible. I am absolutely shocked this business has ever received a 5-star review. I booked my hair and makeup for my April 2022 wedding back in August 2021. I was looking for a one-stop-shop where my sister (maid of honor) and I could go to get away from the wedding day hustle and bustle. Since The Makeup Bar had all great reviews on Yelp and other sites I went ahead and booked it and requested a trial which they said I'd need to call back towards the end of the year. I received both email and text confirmations of this appointment. I called back in November and December to book my trial and found it challenging to reach someone but was eventually told the person who did their scheduling would get back to me in January as the books for their 2022 trials hadn't opened yet. In February, after I realized no one had reached out, I reached out multiple times and finally heard back from Mariah, one of the owners, via text asking what date I wanted my trial. I gave her a date.....and never heard back. Not a text confirmation, no emails, no phone calls. NOTHING. There is zero way this appointment was ever scheduled. I followed up a few weeks later and was told they had scheduled my appointment on my requested day and I no-showed. Again, no confirmations were sent. They said someone would get back to me in a few days to schedule. Nearly 2 weeks later I reached out again and was finally able to set a trial date which I had on March 25, just a few weeks before my wedding. Again, I received text and email confirmations. Nearly 6.5 months after making the initial appointment, Absolute disaster doesn't even begin to explain how the trial went. First, the person set to do my trial (Maci) was late and came in with zero apologies and complained she was tired and didn't want to be there. Okay, fine, we've all had those days. It really is no big deal, she's human. I showed her 2 reference photos of makeup I've worn previously that I really liked and felt pretty in and 1 hair photo reference that I knew looked good (as the stylist who cuts my hair had tried it out the week before). I did indicate if she thought something would look better or had different color suggestions I'd be open to them I wasn't facing a mirror to see the work in progress and was absolutely horrified when I stood up as I looked like an off-brand Bratz doll. The makeup was the complete opposite of what I had shown her and was just genuinely bad. I'm not a 22 year old instagram model. I'm 37 and it's wedding makeup. I wasn't going to the club. I have zero poker face so Maci knew I hated it. I tried to be polite (constantly apologizing millenial here) and say it was intense and I looked like a villain and it was just not what I had shown her. She insisted I'd like it more with the hair but the more she did my hair the more I realized she just isn't good at her job. The hair was nothing like I had shown her (and again someone had done the same hair on me the week before). I tried to coach her through what I wanted but it was just very clear she wasn't capable. She tried to "fix" the makeup but I just looked like an alien. My entire face shape was changed (and not in a good way) There was no coaching or suggestions I could possibly make that would salvage it. I finally just said "oh yeah it's better...what do I owe you" because I just wanted to leave and also start calling places to find someone else. So now I've shelled out $150 for someone to put hideous makeup on my face and a few weeks before my wedding I'm left without hair and makeup because Mariah, one of the owners, couldn't pull it together to get me on the schedule. I did email Mariah first about how upset I was and to cancel my appointment to no response. Also, I have naturally curly hair that holds any curl for days even without product but somehow the style Maci did fell out within 30 minutes of me leaving the salon. I'm just completely baffled. I did but I also would've appreciated a alcohol beverage. They apologized that there wasn't a complimentary alcohol beverage. This was my first class I'm not new to makeup I actually love make up. I came in for an in-studio hair and makeup appointment since I was having engagement photos done. Unfortunately, I felt like I was being an annoyance despite being only one of two people there. (Guess they just wanted to rush me in and out so they could eat their DoorDash order and sit around). The girl who did my hair used absolutely no product and didn't even use a heat protectant. You could literally see and smell the heat damaging my hair. She also didn't ask if my hair holds a curl until AFTER she was completely done with everything. No surprise, my hair was basically flat by the time I left. While my makeup turned out okay, it was definitely a bit over the top. I asked for "natural glam" and instead got dark eyeshadow with dark brown lips. I also found the particular group of girls there that day to be very unprofessional; sitting at the front on their phones, cussing and talking about birth control? And they had the audacity to say that I should book them for my wedding...lol. Definitely won't be returning. read more

There isn't enough words to say how much I love this place. I've gotten my hair and makeup done here on various occasions and have loved it every time. I've taken numerous classes and have loved each one just at much, no matter who teaches it. I recently got married and Jocelyn and Shy did mine and my bridesmaids hair and makeup. They came to my home (where the wedding was) and kept on schedule. Each time I come, the girl always remember me and ask me things that are specific to me showing that they really are getting to know their customer. I highly recommend using their services and taking their classes. They sell makeup that is very comparable to other stores and are good quality. However I had to take one star off as the person teaching our class could have been a little more interactive with us since we were the only two in class. She immediately asked what type of look I was wanting, what my normal makeup routine was, and the reason for the appointment/what event I was going to (sister's baby shower). They also asked what time the baby shower was so that they knew how long lasting the makeup needed to be. She said that the look she gave me could have been more glam, but she toned it down to be careful not to give me a look that would overshadow my sister. I thought that was really cool. Some things that I really liked: 1. She explained what she was doing as she did it, and if I had any questions, she went into detail about her technique. 2. I could tell everything was very clean and sanitary. 3. She asked about my skin type so that the makeup could feel as good as possible. I'm typically very dry skinned so I appreciated that! 4. Went here for bridal shower hair and makeup. I am pretty flexible and asked for a loose twisty updo for hair and soft glam for makeup. Well I should have known there was going to be an issue when after I sat down Macy started doing my hair and asked me if she should curl it first before starting the updo. I looked confused and told her whatever her professional opinion is to go with that. She then curled my hair without any products before to enhance the hold and then let each curl drop and cool instead of pinning each curl. I didn't say anything bc I am not a hair stylist and don't feel I should tell someone how to do their job. She then pulled my hair in a part-less ponytail except for two small curls on my forehair reminiscent of mid 2000 hair. It looked awful. The back was limp and just looked like a dead fish was hiding back there. I moved on to makeup and it was fine. Makeup was heavy but that was easily wiped off at home. But the hair....it made me so uncomfortable I just couldn't wait to get in the car and rip it out. But I thought. Hey...let her know. She is not a mind reader so I told her and she then put a foam bun in the back and wrapped all my hair in that. It was nothing like the photo. At that point she had two takes on it and I had already been there for three hours. I just told her to forget it and I pulled all the pins out and left. They drove to my destination, were on time, and made my makeup look amazing for pictures. I booked hair and makeup again for my maternity shoot on a hot summer day, and everything held nicely. I can't recommend this salon enough. My wedding was 8.12.23. I got in contact with one of the owners of the salon, Mariah, in December of 2022 and the entire process from start to finish was so easy and seamless. We had 3 MUA in total working on us and Mariah doing our hair. Shyanne was a WIZARD and is sooooo incredibly talented. My makeup lasted the ENTIRE night. I looked airbrushed and natural, and all the glams photographed beautifully. All of the girls looked amazing. You can't beat the prices either, it's a lot cheaper if you travel to them. They have the cutest salon and we were able to use their back room to set up our snacks and a little mimosa bar we brought in. We had the whole salon to ourselves and it was honestly so so perfect. This place is great!! The makeup classes are well taught and they help you the whole time. The materials they let you use are high quality and the free gifts with classes are above and beyond what you would expect. This place is great to bring a few girlfriends, do your makeup with professional products and professional help along the way so you don't look busted,-then go out afterwards! I got married in Napa on 7/1/22 and had The Makeup Bar girls take care of me and all my girls for my wedding day. I cannot recommend them enough. Mariah made sure everything was organized for the entire day and coordinated a timeline with me well in advance.
