We sat down at Maison on Frenchmen for some overpriced shrimp (9 little ones) , a beer and a soda ($50 with the double service charge + tip scam), the waitress was constantly coming back trying to sell more. Came to Maison on Saturday night to see St. Julien X. The music itself was excellent, and the venue has a great atmosphere, which made this experience even more disappointing. One of the performers wore a "Palestine" shirt on stage and then repeatedly gave hostile looks toward me after noticing my visible Star of David necklace. Regardless of anyone's political views, no guest should feel uncomfortable or targeted for openly being Jewish. In today's climate, political messaging like this can create a very unwelcoming atmosphere for Jewish guests. I hope management considers asking performers to keep politics off the stage so the venue remains welcoming to everyone. read more

Maison and Dirty Dozen Brass Band After spending the morning and afternoon at the 2025 New Orleans Jazz festival I headed back to my hotel to rest for a bit before seeing the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, for a 10 p.m. show at Maison. Located in the heart of Frenchmen (508 Frenchmen St.), I stopped by early to learn doors would open at 9:30 p.m., giving me enough time to cross the street for crawfish étouffée at Frenchmen All Day (630 Frenchmen Street). I had wisely paid for access to the balcony ($40 + $10 handling) and because I was first in line at 9:30 I was able to secure a small high-top table not far from the upstairs bar but with a view of the front of the stage. (I think general admission $25, was for standing room only.) The band was amazing! Rich, colorful sound, nicely blended by a group that clearly knew each other's styles. It reminded me of some of the scenes from HBO's series "Tremé" - the venue itself appears a couple of times in the series (which aired for four seasons starting in 2011 and currently is available through Amazon Prime Video). The Dirty Dozen Brass Band's performance captured the swing and feeling of the French Market music scene. Not sure why the balcony lacked a video screen - much of the upstairs seating had great acoustics but no sight line of the stage itself. Drink prices were reasonable given the high quality of the venue, and the bartended was personable and helpful - and there was never more than a five-minute wait to get served. My only concern (and it's not even a complaint) was the repeated appearance of iPad Man, who presumably had been responsible for the band's sound engineering. He apparently needed to make many trips during the show to adjust sound values, and while the band didn't need to stop while these changes were made, his presence at center stage was distracting. Maybe there's a reason why traditional sound boards served their purpose so well for so many years. Whatever software was being used to run the sound quality, its user needs to up his game and get the job done before the show starts. I came to Maison hoping to experience the vibe that "Tremé" spoke to and was richly rewarded with an outstanding night in New Orleans. read more

We were there on Wednesday, December 8th around 8pm. If you want a seat you need to order from the menu. The bar was full and we wanted to sit so we opted for getting a dessert. They only had one option, chocolate bread pudding. It was supposed to be al la mode, but they were out of ice cream, so it was only $8 instead of $12. It really needed ice cream as it was rich. It was still good. I'm glad we got it, it was worth having to place an order so we could sit down. The bar was packed all night. The tables rotated as people came and went all night. They have set bands for different days of the week. They were very well put together and professional. I really liked the band, and so much so that I bought a CD for $20. read more

We were seated right up front and truly enjoyed watching the band's musicianship up close--the talent and vocals were a real treat. This is a first-class group. We saw the Shot Gun Jazz Band and were very impressed with their performance. The food was also surprisingly tasty for a pub-style venue, and the service was very accommodating. As a music teacher and musician, what I love most about NOLA isn't the drinking--it's the jazz! Not just live music, but live JAZZ! It is the Mecca for jazz lovers. And the Maison makes sure you hear it all day long! Going to the jazz brunch was the best idea we've had on this vacation. The Sunny Side Jazz Band was excellent, the drinks were so good, and the food was delicious! We got seated right away and the server split our check, no problem. I'll be back pretty much every trip. We went on a Sunday night for the live music. There wasn't a cover but there was a sign that required a 1 drink minimum per person which they really didn't enforce. We walked by the night before on a Saturday and it was packed and I believe they had a cover charge that night. Nonetheless on Sunday, we were able to grab a table, nothing fancy with the drinks but we did enjoy great live music. The band (Higher Heights) was awesome, loved the energy and they played a mixture of reggae and old school RnB. Had such an awesome time singing and enjoying a great show. I came here for the music and drinks, not the food, but the gumbo and fries were enjoyable. The music was excellent. I also cannot emphasize enough how much I appreciate the fact they allow kids during a certain time. We came around 7:00, and were seated within 15 minutes without a reservation on a Thursday night. While we were waiting outside, a lady asked me if we were "getting the kids started on jazz early." Yes, indeed. It's never too early, and New Orleans is a great place to do it. We were able to enjoy some food, drinks, and great jazz music with the kids, which isn't easy, because not many venues in the area allow kids. Apparently you have to reserve a table in advance to guarantee seating to watch the jazz set. It's worth the $25 + tax for 4 pax. I was a bit hesitant about eating there as there were mixed reviews. It's definitely elevated pub food but we had some favorites. The chicken wings are a must. They were light and crispy. We also added a side of ranch. The trilogy with jumbalaya, gumbo, and red beans and rice was just okay. Great selection of drinks and cocktails as they have a full bar. The music was great the night we went. The going around trying to collect tips is a bit much but I get it, it's the only way to get people to pay attention and give some love. read more

Was very disappointed in the service here. We had been looking forward to spending the day on Frenchmen and meeting up with a friend. This was our first stop. There was a young girl at the door on a stool. She looked miserable and didn't greet us so we didn't know why she was there. Place was pretty empty with a good jazz band. We sat at the bar and ordered a drink but the stools were uncomfortable. So we asked the girl if we could sit at a table. She made a face but sat us. We quickly saw an older woman talk with the girl while looking at us and then come over to tell us we couldn't sit at the table unless we were eating. We had to immediately go back to the bar. Needless to say we quickly finished our drinks and left. I felt sorry for the band. We went next door where there was another band and spent hours with a nice size bill. Went there on a weekday evening to listen to some jazz. There was no cover. Drinks were average price for the area and the selection was decent. Sitting could have been better but I didn't care because the bartender made a good martini for me to enjoy while listening to the music. He was fast and courteous. She did not offer us another of the several open tables. I asked the host if we could move and he put us at a separate table, but it was under crazy-strong fans that on this cool day, froze us out and made us exit immediately after our meal instead of enjoying the music. We were looking over the appetizer menu when a big woman in pink spandex came over and said she was training our waitress. She said everyone must order a drink. I didn't want alcohol and I don't drink soda. We were getting ready to order appetizers. She could not have been more rude. They add a 20% tip so I suppose she feels she can be as rude as she wants? 5-Stars for the live music. If you like good old-fashioned jazz then this is your place. We caught two wonderful bands (2 visits) and wanted to stay for the drag show upstairs but we had late dinner plans. The music is king here. We did order food during our first visit and it was not good at all. I likened my gumbo to something I could get at an all-you-can hotel buffet. My old-fashioned was not very good. I went to the bar and explained what was wrong with my drink and the bartender had to refer to the menu to make the drink, ouch. The redo was not much better. Lesson learned order simple. On our second visit, we caught another great band. We sat through an entire set and were never offered a drink. Servers walked past us a number of times so after the 3rd walk by we just decided to enjoy the band. C'est la vie. Go here for the music and be sure to tip the band! read more

We couldn't really see the band so we asked to move because there were quite a few empty tables. They let us sit at this church pew bench in the front with a great view of the band. We had to hold our drinks, but other than that, great seats. The music was some of the best we heard on Frenchman's street. I wish I remembered the name of the band, but the woman had the best voice.
