The very first time I went to the store it was on its old address, and I immediately felt welcomed. They have several things to choose from things you wouldn't expect necessarily find. They have a large assortment of herbs and crystals to help with all of your needs. They are so knowledgeable and so friendly. This is the best store for your metaphysical needs. I highly recommend them whether you live in Indiana or are passing through. I also love their new store on Washington because it has more space and a lot more things available. This is an interesting shop to check out while visiting Irvington. I was surprised to see it open late on a Sunday afternoon (their website says they aren't usually open on Sundays) and decided to stop in. I'm not a religious person and don't believe in spells and potions and that sort of thing, but I do have respect for other individual's beliefs. So wandering into here was something new to me. They have lots of books and hundreds of herbs, they have incense and candles, lots of plants in the front window (not sure if those are for sale), and a room in the back for reading and classes. They have bumper stickers with spiritual comments, sometimes humorous. Basically, there are a lot of items to browse through that aren't like what you find in other places. After seeing all the recommendations on Yelp, I recently decided to stop in and shop the Magic Candle. However, I was sorely disappointed. The shop itself is more decoration than wares to buy. There was a small bookshelf with a limited selection of magic and semi-related texts. The rest of the shop had very few actual items pertaining to magic and spirituality mixed in amongst stuff that would be better suited for a flea market. The vibe of the store and the sole employee was also pretty off, which I wouldn't normally discuss but for a metaphysical store, I feel this information to be pertinent. In conclusion, if you're looking to experience the novelty of shopping in a magic store with a quirky aesthetic, this might do. However, if you are serious about the occult, magic, spirituality, or the metaphysical, you might find this shop severely lacking. read more

The owner of this Irvington shop (about 2 blocks from Homespun) takes immense pride that most of her merchandise is hand-made, often by locals. The items sold here are mainly centered around new-age, pagan, and wiccan lifestyles. She sells a variety of informative books as well as herbs, teas, jewelry, charms, nick-nacks, and, yes, candles. Classes are offered in the back of the store on topics such as the moon and chakra. The owner is very friendly and definitely gives back to the community. The store used to be the area's grocery store, and the butcher counter wall has been preserved...you can still see the doors for the cooler and the chalk boards where specials were written. Be sure to give the lovely shop cat a pat. Gaiaworks also runs a food pantry out of this location, so if you ever have non-perishables to donate, or know someone in the area who is struggling, definitely head here. My friend and I happened across this shop during a leisurely stroll about Irvington, being an adventurous couple of gals, we decided to drop in and check it out. It is everything I would imagine an esoteric supply store would be...dusty, dim, shelves and tables and cabinets filled haphazardly with all sorts of interesting things. Books lined the shelves with topics ranging from witchcraft for teens, reading auras, communing with your spirit guides, wiccan history, and other witchy topics. The owner also said they do classes, so it's like your local Hogwart's right in the heart of Irvington. The owner is really friendly and super helpful, she is very enthusiastic about the craft, and was willing to answer all sorts of silly questions that my friend and I had, since neither of us was at all familiar with the practice. She told us how to cast a candle spell! I even bought some conjure oil for attraction she made especially for me...she said she threw a little bit of extra magical ingredients in there for me and now when I wear it, my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard. This is a lovely shop in Historic Irvington!! I walked in one day on a whim and ended up staying for almost an hour. Jan, the owner, is one of the nicest and most sincere people I've ever met. She answered every question I had, and trust me,...I had A LOT! She even gave us information on holistic specialists and therapies. (My hubby and I are trying to get prego) ...She offered great advice and really listened to what we both had to say. They offer classes (which unfortunantely I haven't been able to attend yet...but I will hopefully get the next Chakra class) and I believe they do readings as well... I always love coming here to get my herbs, incense, and pretty soon I will starting one of the classes! I'm pretty excited! Also, I forgot to mention they have very good customer service and are very helpful. I got a few tips on how I could help my daughter fall asleep easier and more naturally. I was pretty impressed when she told me to put a little bit of lavender into her pillow case and what do you know! My daughter has been sleeping with such ease. Magick Candle rests snuggly in Irvington with tons of character. I absolutely loved their selection of herbs! They had low priced taper candles and the most elegant but yet "out-there" looking necklaces. The store owner was so passionate when she was talking about the herbs she has, which is really nice to see someone doing what they love as a job. The store owner even had 2 cats roaming around that were so cute and friendly! There are also bookshelves full of meditation, pagan, and mythology books! First, I want to cover the bad part of my experience with this shop. I had called in looking for those 7-day, glass-encased candles used in a lot of hispanic traditions. The woman I spoke with over the phone proceeded to tell me they "don't teach that" there, they don't carry that type of candle, and talked down about the use of those candles. She even called their use "new-age" (they're not), which to me is usually fighting words and really offended me, but I let it go because she didn't know me, and frankly a fellow magical practitioner being highly opinionated (correct or not) is really commonplace (including yours truly). But still, I showed up to check the place out because I also wanted to get some herbs for use in a magical working. The same woman recognized me by voice and we proceeded to talk and she explained her points to me further. But still, the candle selection was not what I had hoped otherwise (disappointing, given the store's name). But that's where the negative part ends. Their herb selection is AWESOME! There was a rather large variety of herbs, some of which I had not seen at other magical stores that carry herbs. She really was carrying some great stuff and out of a list of herbs I was looking for, there was *maybe* one she didn't have. In addition to the herbs, they also had a lot of other curios (jewelry, assorted objects, etc) of interest, and handmade oils, incense, and powders for magical use (which is always a big plus in my book despite making my own). I especially like that last bit because they weren't just peddling mass-produced magical oils that likely contain neither real oil nor botanical ingredients. These were genuine-article products! Also, the woman at the store that day is pretty knowledgeable and solid in it. She and I were chatting and I got a decent idea or two for future magical workings from her. Overall, I like this store and would go back. I'm rating it 4 stars for the following reasons: 1. I found the candle and book selections somewhat lackluster: not great, but not bad. 2. Fantastic herb selection and availability of locally handmade magical oils, incense, and powders. 3. Various other items of interest. 4. Knowledgeable and helpful staff. Very sad that I drove to the shop which was 30+ minutes from my home, to find that they were closed during business hours for lunch. I do not at all begrudge a person for taking a lunch, but to take a very long lunch during business hours I thought was a little unprofessional. 15 minutes yes, 45-1 hour no. So I never got to go in and was very disappointed. I suggest that people call before they go to the shop to make sure they are not taking an hour lunch break. read more
