A good bar. Very good service and food not too bad. The nights we were there they had a live band. The band was very very good. My only complaint is a general complaint about many (most?) Canadian bars - the beer choice is fairly limited. Coming from the USA where at most bars you have a large selection of local and non-local micro brews as well as a fairly large national and international selection, it's difficult to get use to the limited selection of the pretty bad beers available in Canadian bars. I think that this is because many of the Canadian bars are locked into a contract and obligated to carry only beers from a specific company (e.g., Labatt: Budweiser, Keith's, etc.) It's the way I guess it used to be in the USA about 15 (?) years ago. I'm not so happy about the beer choices in Canada and so I think the best strategy is to view it as a cultural experience and enjoy the beer they have. I had never had a Keith's so it was a good one-time-only experience to drink Keith's in Canda. Don't know why there was a shift in the USA away from big name beers to local micro brews. The growth and great success of small independent local micro brews that initially define a local area and then sometimes go big (e.g., Yards, Victory, Green Flash, Fat Tire, ect.) seems unique to the USA - I have not had similar experiences in European or Asian countries. Maybe a movement that will be eventually be picked up in other countries (there are some good micro brews in Canada) or maybe something that stays unique to the USA? Maybe something unique to Capitalist USA ('give me lots of choices and only the best') versus the more socialist Canada ('not thanks, whatever is available will do'). Tip: DO NOT try to sneak in Propeller Beer (a great local beer). read more

This place is a "MUST VISIT" whenever you are in the Halifax, Nova Scotia region. It's a little known secret about the bar under the restaurant. The bands are awesome. When we were there, Signal Hill was the band that night. They are the best! Irish pub tunes mixed with rock tunes, you can't go wrong. Beers are icy cold and the crowd is hot. One of the most popular and iconic pubs in eastern Canada. It's down at the waterfront in Halifax and is packed to bursting almost every night. 99% of the people here are drinking Keith's draft beer, glass after glass (or pitcher after pitcher). There's live music every night, usually acoustic guitar singalong bands that do Maritime standards. You'll be brushing elbows at the long wooden tables inside and probably end up with your arm around someone, singing your lungs out, before the night's over. Or, if the weather's good, you may be at one of the many plastic chairs and tables outside, watching the endless crowds of tourists wander by for ice cream. You'll have to pay a cover charge of a few dollars to get in at the evenings. There's a lounge and a restaurant upstairs if you're feeling a little more sophisticated. You can get usual pub grub downstairs: burgers, fish and chips, etc. It's a common meeting spot, and a great place to take visitors to give them a drunken sample of Maritime pub culture. read more

I think mostly what you're paying for is the location and the atmosphere because we had 8 people and everyone's food was the shits. The service was inconsistent, we had more than one which was great but the attitude on one of the servers dampened our time...could have just been having a bad day though so I don't want to say the service was bad. Love the lower deck DT waterfront location, we have been there plenty of times and always have an awesome time. The Clayton Park location is close to our home so we have been going there more and more. Same awesome friendly staff... Fantastic bands... And great food... It can get busy on Friday and Saturday nights so if you want I a seat to watch the bands arrive before 9 pm. Sunday brunch is awesome, love the banana bread French toast. Enjoyed our Thursday night playing trivia at The Lower Deck. It was a fundraiser for Heart and Stroke. I appreciate a business that assists local charities reach fundraising goals. If you're visiting Halifax, this is where you can enjoy a true Maritime experience. Be sure to view their entertainment schedule. The atmosphere is great, the food is good and the beer is cold. Walked up to have dinner and the patio seating area was empty except for 2 tables. I went to walk in, and they informed me I had to pay $9 cover charge. I explained I only wanted a quick dinner, and they again told me I had to pay $9 cover ...to eat dinner? I don't think so. Came here late night for some drinks. The building is really cool and historic. It was really crowded downstairs, but we went to the upstairs bar and found seats and had a good amount of space. There's also an outdoor area if you're so inclined. They had live music playing and a good crowd. That, paired with good music playing upstairs and good drinks made for a fun night. I'd come back here if I were in the area - in my opinion, the little details in this historic building are what makes it really special. read more

Very disappointing. Staff was beyond rude - we waited and waited and finally had to ask to order. Never given flatware or napkins - even when food arrived and we requested. Finally picked with our fingers because none to be found anywhere and we had a show to get to. We felt like we had intruded on them. A man came over to ask for our ID, & when I gave mine to him, he proceeded with a remark "I've seen this ID before" ...... .......... Wait... What?! I haven't even been here before & this guy has the nerve??? & why would he say that anyway? So, we ordered our iced teas & I wanted lemon on the side to squeeze in. He tells me it's already lemon flavoured; he brings us empty cups with Nestlè bottles of iced tea. I'm already wanting to put this dinner in reverse! ... Came here on a Saturday for some drinks. The first floor was a sardine can and had no room to enjoy the live music. Went up to the second floor to find a dance floor and had lots of room to sit. The bar clearly hadn't been cleaned properly in decades. The tables were sticky and I could barely see out the filthy windows. All in all, its an OK place to drink and enjoy music or dance if you don't mind being in a dive. I feel there are better places to enjoy a brew in Halifax. read more

I went to the Lower Deck the other day, and will never go again. The staff, from the bouncers to the bartenders to the waitresses, were the worst I have ever experienced. This place is evidently somewhere to go if you want to be falling down drunk (which I did not), and because of that, everyone treats you like you are already an unruly burden to them. First, the bouncer was short tempered and hostile at the door. We went in, paid our cover, and asked two different staff members (including another bouncer) if we went outside to smoke, could we come right back in right away because our hand was stamped. They both said yes. We went out, and when we tried to get back in from the POURING rain, the bouncer immediately started screaming at us to get back in line. When we showed him our stamps, and tried to explain that we were told we could come back in, he just started yelling over and over 'I don't care! get in line!' gesturing at us to get away from him! So, as customers who had already waited in line in the rain, and paid our cover, we had to stand in line again and get soaked. It also was not busy at this time, so it couldn't have been an occupancy thing, and even if it was there is absolutely no excuse to talk to paying customers like that. Or any human being, for that matter. From then on it was a disaster. Unfriendly bartenders who would barely even make eye contact when they served you, waitresses who wouldn't come back to take more orders because she didn't want the extra work, and more bouncers barking orders at you about not taking certain staircases and how our chairs were in the way. Again, all reasonable things to ask of your patrons; not reasonable to shout commands at them like they are dogs. And then there is the crowd. Drunk off their asses, falling over, spilling beer on you, grinding so hard they hip check you about a foot. The floors and table were sticky, and the whole place smelled bad. Drink and food were also extremely overpriced. Never again. read more

Five adults and one child drove up from New Brunswick. We found the service great! We sat for less than three minutes before a waitress came buy and within 15 minutes, we all had our meal. Steak , fish, macroni, and nachos were what we all ordered. All I can say was YUM! We will defiantly come back again. Great staff and friendly as well. read more

The Lower Deck is one of those places that I never want to go to, because I think it's pretty touristy, but once I'm there I always end up having a good time. Booze may be responsible for that, but the place is usually full of people who are singing and getting trashed, and that's a pretty infectious mood. Whether you end up mocking the trashy house band (Hellooooo, soul patches!), getting your grind on (eww) upstairs, or defending your virtue from that huge drunk with the missing teeth, The Lower Deck has lots of exciting experiences on offer. Bartenders here have always been rllll nice, and I've only had a couple beers spilled on me by strangers. It's loud, but no one's complaining. read more

This is our favorite place to eat. You get it all - delicious food, lovely entertainment, sit outside and watch the people on the waterfront - it is the place to be in Halifax during the summer. This pub used to be my 2nd home in my 20s on the average Saturday night. I had a very weird bond with the place mentally...lol. Now in my late 30s, and having moved away from Halifax and back again, I have only been here once recently, on a gorgeous Friday afternoon in July with a group of friends. The service is still about the same/average as it's always been. The atmosphere never changes. We sat on the patio and got the last two tables available, and pushed them together. Considering how packed the place was, service was still prompt enough. The server took our drink orders and filled them within 5 mins from the outdoor bar (smart to have that there). Food wasn't too long a wait either actually, considering all seven of us had full meals. My veggie burger (12.99 special blend patty made from scratch, topped with jalapeno havarti cheese, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, garlic basil yogurt sauce) was very good and big. Quite soft, but not the messiest fresh patty I've ever eaten. I was painfully full afterwards from it, with side potato wedges. The others in my group enjoyed their fish & chips, clam chowder and burgers. I know I will be back here in the future, whether to eat, drink or both...if you are the type of person that just wants a relaxing afternoon in the sun, stop by the patio on a weekday afternoon. We had numerous recommendations to go here for night life. It was just 'ok'. The main floor was local music and bench style seating. Lots of friendly ppl and a big range of age groups. The music was done at midnight and a huge contingency of ppl moved upstairs for the dance music. Some recent tunes mixed with some 90s classics. It was a pretty sloppy crowd (nothing like hearing the person next to you in the bathroom heaving). We stayed until close though despite it being a bit of a dive. Last call is 2am and they literally turn the music off mid song and kick you out. Also be prepared to be constantly hounded by men here if your a female. They were all harmless but it was a revolving door of wanna be gropers. Didn't regret going here as some fun was had but don't think I'd ever go again. read more

This evening started off great with us pitching cover for $8 and getting a couple drinks at the bar before seeing the live band. While we were there standing behind the yellow line allowing other patrons to see from the bench seating available. There was a young lady that would not stand behind the line after being asked by security multiple times. After adhering to their request, she ended up backing into our group began to dance elbowing us in the head and abdomen. She then got into it with our group once we asked to provide a little space. She did not take kindly to this simple polite request. It was the last song of the night so we walked towards the door, once we were at the door she then said used derogatory and extremely racist phrases (calling me a Cu*t Ni**er) while we were walking out. Being coloured I took offence to this, security closed the door behind us and when speaking to them they did nothing. Head of security said that it is the end of everyone's night and that we should just leave. The racist patron along with her friends were welcome to stay to finish her night and did not want myself or my friends to cause 'any trouble.' I relayed this was unacceptable however, the only response we got was 'there's nothing we can do, and I don't really care what happened in there I don't want any fighting.' At the end of the day it's their business and this is the way the they chose to handle it. I defiantly would not be going back nor would I recommend ANY person of colour to go here. Clearly by the behaviour from security your patronage is not welcome nor will you have the support from their security personnel when issues such as these come up. read more

I knew a salad could work with my own dressing, but they offered to pull some bare chicken, plumped up the salad, and even wouldn't cut the chicken for fear of contamination. This is actually a star and a half review. I ordered a fully loaded Caesar salad and a spiced rum and coke. Apparently the place only sells dark rum.
