Amazing location - where else can you get japanese products and cafe drinks in New Haven, CT? Great drinks - Their matcha products are from Kettl in NY and their coffee is from Devocion so you know they're good! Awesome food - their chirashi bowls are so pretty with the perfect flavor profile.

We've always stopped by the shop to pick up sandwiches and drinks. This is the first time dining here. Everything was really good. I like that the waffles were crispy in stead of soft. The food was very good. Also liked dinning outside with our little pup.

The Loop by Hachiroku has multiple sides. It's part upscale market where you buy high quality Asian ingredients for home cooking, and cool packaged and bottled Asian products that you wouldn't find in most markets. I bought some treats from their partner Hen and Heifer from Guilford, some Asian snack mixes and a few other things. Now that I know the range of their offerings, I'll have a better plan about what to buy next time. Salmon roe. Wagyu anyone? The Loop is also part prepared food, ready to eat Asian food specialist. The type of stuff that you might find in the sushi area of a nice grocery store, except way, way higher quality, and much more varied in terms of ingredients and offerings. The type of things that the some of the best Asian food creators in a city might make, which is the case with the Loop. The Loop is affiliated with the super well respected Hachiroku restaurants in New Haven. I bought a Bara Chirashi Bowl, which consisted of small pieces of great sashimi tuna, yellowtail, salmon and shrimp, and saba, masago, scallions, ginger and sushi rice. I'm not aware of another CT Market where you get ready to eat food of this quality. My shrimp dumplings were also good. I've only scratched the surface because I went early in the day. They have a bar in the cool industrial vibe eating room. Can you get sake there? Can you order specially made food there? 5 Stars.

I liked the loop! Service was good! Our waitress was kind of funny too. I think the pace was fine and it was easy to get a table without a reservation (on a Sunday). The food was great! The ingredients were fresh. I love the Brussels sprouts - they were fantastic. The portion of Brussels sprouts was amazing and they were topped with really fun potato chips and lotus root chips. The ambiance was good too!

When asked why the name "the Loop", the owners happily shared they named it because they want to be the loop and force that brings community together. From sourcing local businesses (example: Hen and Heifer bakery desserts available for sale on opening weekend) to people in the neighborhood coming out, the line and the community coming out to check out Hachiroku on opening day, looks like they're on the path already. With bustling vibes, fun music, and lots of options of Japanese and Asian groceries, The Loop has made a strong debut to the New Haven scene. Many unique grocery options such as different types of A5 Wagyu or toro / chutoro tuna for sale to prepare at home. They also have meal boxes for hot Japanese meals like the eel, salmon, or saba bento boxes, or if you want raw fish there are chirashi and oyako bowls. In the to go area there's also Japanese curry plates and sushi. Something for everyone it seems! From matcha to snacks to the yakult, they've got it all. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating available in open space with plants for such a nice vibe. I'm excited to see how the Loop will grow and continue to stock all the goods. I'm excited to cook all of the Wagyu I bought for dinner!

Casual ramen joint inside a Japanese market. Fast counter service where you grab the food to your seat. Broth was good, if a little unusual soy milk was incorporated into one of them. My ramen with the egg did not have the egg split (served whole as you can see) so inside was cold. Meat was also very tough and not tender.

I think this Hachiroku might be the best one worth your buck. The food is amazing with great and amazing staff. I went here initially for grocery shopping and really enjoyed the little things that I could get. But the restaurant is top notch. It's a great place for big groups of people or small parties. Our waiter was so nice and amazing. This place has probably the best edamame dish in my opinion. It was toasted and crunchy with a hint of yuzu. The food was excellent. Highly recommend this place if you're in town!

This is a small Japanese supermarket inside Yale University. There are 2 separate parts inside the store. On the right side is the supermarket and a kitchen where you can buy food, drinks, premade meals and etc. On the left side is the big area with plenty of seats where you can sit down if you want to eat your food and drink. It also has alcoholic bar which opens only on Thursday - Sunday 5pm to 10pm. We got salmon bowl $11.99 , chirashi bowl $20.99 and sparkling ume juice $3.49. Personally I think the price is really high because the portion is small. Also everything in the store is expensive. As for the flavor, they were not bad. I think this place is owned by Japanese because there are Japanese people working there. I was just visiting the campus and l was happy to see this type of store in Yale University. I might go back there to try the sake bar if I come up here again.

This is a great addition to the New Haven Community. I stopped by here after an event in the area and loved the vibes. The opened outdoor bar area and restaurant area attached to the little grocery store is such a great concept. I only had time for the store and bought a bunch of prepared items like the onigiri in spicy salmon and char siu filling. I got some drinks and snacks. It was fast and easy check out. I will definitely be back to try the restaurant area.

The two had worked as butchers when they first immigrated to New Haven. When they heard that a local sausage company named Phil's Sausage Kitchen on Congress Avenue was going bankrupt, the brothers borrowed $1,000 to purchase the location. The Hummel Brothers had both trained as 'wurstmachers' (sausage makers) in Germany and wanted to make the finest products available to local consumers. Thus 'Hummel's Premium Quality Provisions' was born, and it didn't take long for the company to become a household name. They moved to their current larger location in the 1970s. Today the company is run by their grandchildren. The company's best-selling product has always been their hotdogs. Hummel Brothers were one of the first sausage companies to stop using red dye and make hotdogs with their natural color. Varieties they make include Natural Casing Frankfurters, Skinless Frankfurters, All-Beef Frankfurters, Red Hots and Cocktail Franks. Hummels' Hotdogs are widely available at supermarkets and restaurants throughout Southern Connecticut. If you buy a hotdog from a hotdog vendor in the area, chances are that it's a Hummels' Hotdog. Hummel Brothers also make a variety of other meat products including bratwurst & knockwurst, kielbasa, spiral ham & ham steaks, corned beefs, and various deli meats. They also have a retail store and deli at their production facility where you can buy delicious sandwiches. I recently stopped in for a delicious Pastrami, Egg & Cheese breakfast sandwich. Hummel Brothers have been very special to me for as long as I can remember. The first hotdog I ever ate was a Hummels' Hotdog and I rarely eat other brands. I also have a family connection. My great-grandfather Heinrich "Henry" Klein was a trained butcher and immigrant from Cologne, Germany. Not only was he friends with the original Hummel Brothers, but he was also one of their first employees.

The Ciccone family has origins from Naples, Italy. The family-owned market specializes in fresh produce, freshly baked breads, prepared dishes, various Italian imports, and catering services. In 2009, the Ciccone family purchased the Orange Street Market in New Haven's East rock neighborhood and turned it into P&M's second location. A third location opened in Hamden in 2022, but it closed down the following year. In recent years, Mario & Maria have taken a step back and let their sons Bruno and Joseph "Pino" take over. Bruno handles business at the original Branford location while Pino runs things at the New Haven location. Pino also owns Enoteca Cassanova (a liquor store), which is right next to the New Haven location. My family and I just visited P&M Orange Street Market for the first time. This was our first visit to either of P&M's locations. We really liked the market which featured a lot of great fresh foods, prepared dishes, and other products. But the main reason we came to P&M was for their pizza! Beginning in 2024, P&M began hosting "Pizza on the Patio" every Wednesday from 4-8pm throughout the warmer months. Their pizza trailer parks in front of the storefront and slings up delicious wood-fired pies. The chalkboard menu changes up every week, depending on which ingredients are fresh and available. After looking over the menu, we ordered and shared a "Cheese Pizza", the "High Heat" (Margherita w/ cherry peppers & hot honey), and "The Charmer" (circular panini w/ burrata, mortadella, arugula, cherry tomatoes, topped w/ EVOO, balsamic glaze & crushed pistachios). Holy moly! This pizza was fantastic! Excellent sauce and just the right amount of char around the edges of the crust (which you don't always see with wood-fired pizza). All of the toppings tasted super fresh too! "The Charmer", which was essentially a panini-pizza hybrid, was very interesting. The friendly staff told us that it was the first time it was ever featured on the menu. We really enjoyed our experience at P&M Orange Street Market and hope to return for another pizza night soon!

Prices run a bit high, but the quality of the ingredients more than make up for it. The Jako Salad (4.5/5) is a favorite of mine. It perfectly mixes peppery arugula and crisp radish with a poached egg, fried baby anchovy, bonito flakes, and nori. The baby anchovy gives a sweet/salty crunch that tastes like my childhood. Every bite swings between fresh and umami in a really creative way. The harasu don (5/5) is pure richness in a rice bowl. Grilled salmon belly and salmon roe together are incredibly rich, almost to the edge of too much, but the warm rice underneath keeps it grounded and turns it into a perfect comfort dish. The giant octopus sashimi (4/5) is a great counterbalance, cleanly sliced with a firm, fresh bite that lightens things up. The fresh tofu with uni (5/5) might be my favorite plate. The tofu is ultra delicate, and the rich uni on top adds a briny depth. With the simple seasonings on the side, it's a savory panna cotta. If they ever did a dessert version with ginger syrup, I would be here daily. Sashimi here is excellent (5/5). You get a balanced mix of fatty cuts like otoro and leaner ones like akami, along with hamachi, katsuo, and octopus. The variety lets you move between clean and rich bites at your own pace. A side note. Every so often a piece of yamamomo shows up on the plate (small red berries), a little mountain peach that is sweet enough to outshine most desserts. It may just be a palette cleanser, but it is a personal 10/5 for me. So good! Both indoor and outdoor seating feel comfortable, and service was on point: kind, attentive, and well timed. Overall, this is a standout Japanese option that I would highly recommend if you're ever in New Haven.

Hachiroku was a highly anticipated place after being nominated for Restaurant of the Year in New…read moreHaven County for Connecticut Restaurant Association's annual Crazies awards so I had it on my list of must go to restaurants. I have also never been to a sake bar. Have to say....I was underwhelmed. We came in last Friday and apparently it was slow because Yale was off (according to our waiter). If a restaurant is good they should not be slow on a Friday night. We sat by the door on a cold night and there were two other couples practically on top of us. Rest of the seating are high tops against a wall by the bar or up the stairs on another level. We would have liked to sit upstairs but they were closing off that area. Menu was complex as the restaurant is authentic Japanese. Lots of beef options. Lots of Wagyu. I was hoping to be blown away by this restaurant trying something different. I was struggling trying to find something to order that sounded appetizing. I knew going in that this place was authentic Japanese but I don't know, nothing sounded great to me. I love mushrooms so I got the Mixed Kinoko Mushroom appetizer which was $15. To add scallops was another $8. Mushrooms were tasty. Scallops were not. $23 for a small dish. I also got the pork short ribs. Not a ton of meat on them, however, nice flavor. I was still hungry after this so I ordered a dessert which was the best part of the meal. They get some of their desserts from Hen & Heifer which is a well established place in Guilford. I got the Ube Panna cotta. Boyfriend got the Black cod Yu-an Yaki and upgraded to add the salad, pickles and rice for $3 more. The pickles were maybe two bites. Salad tasty but again, very small. He said the cod was just ok too. Very small portions and pricey for what you get. $30 for a mini sake flight. Not impressed with how it was served either. Small tasting glasses just placed on the table with no description. The server explained which was which, but I didn't remember. Not sure if he didn't care or this is how it's normally served, but if you go to a wine bar/brewery, they provide descriptions with flights usually written underneath the glass, or at least serve it in something. Not just tiny glasses placed on a table where you have no idea what you're having. Especially for $30! I was not impressed with this place whatsoever. As this is part of a newer restaurant group with a few different locations nearby in New Haven, we then went to their cocktail Lounge on crown street (116 Cocktail Bar) thinking it might be better, however we were equally disappointed. It was dead in there and the bartenders were miserable. They couldn't wait to get out of there. I have heard that their hand roll bar is very good (Handroll on State St). We have been to their Grocery Store called The Loop and it's cute. They have a brunch at the Grocery/Kitchen location that looks really good. They also have a wine lounge at The Loop that I'd like to try.
