I've recently moved to Cambridge from London and so am on the look-out for good restaurants. I like Mexican food. Plus, I like my food to arrive properly hot, tacos crisp, tortillas not soggy, salad fresh, and my sour cream cold. Etcetera.
Loco opened only 2 months ago so I was curious. Well, it's great news. Colourful walls, bare wood, super-clean (quite brightly lit - I was there pretty early not sure if they dim it or use candles later in the evening for atmosphere which would be good) but feels laid-back too. The bar's a great little area at the front (fab cocktail list), and it goes through to the spacious restaurant. The staff are warm and friendly. The music is Latino of course; not too loud, which was great.
The Loco menu generally works like this: there are five choices - marinated chicken / pulled pork in barbeque sauce / chilli beef / fish / feta cheese - and you can have any of them either in either a taco, burrito, fajita or quesadilla. I really liked my chicken burrito (£5.95) and so I had pulled pork quesadilla (£4.95), just as good. Both came with salad garnish and small amounts of guacamole which probably could have been larger (you'd need to order extra if you wanted it to accompany the main). There are loads of side dishes you can order with them and the menu also has Mexican grills, salads and some very yummy-looking starters.
For dessert I had churros (the fried donut strips with a chocolate or caramel dip). They were the best churros I've had - hot and crisp and the caramel sauce was really thick and good. They were £4.95 for three very decent-size pieces (although in fact I could have done with four for the price) I also had a glass of good Merlot.
All this - two main courses (I'm blushing), a dessert and a glass of wine - came to approx £19 which I think is excellent.
I would really recommend Loco and intend to return soon. read more
