Perfect spot for a small birthday gathering! We had a group of 6 come here after Brunch on a Saturday. Location was easy to find, and plenty of parking on scene. I want to say they had about 6 lanes for axe throwing? Could be totally wrong. A staff member spends the hour with you, but kind of in the background, they're not annoying and just lingering. They show you safe and proper techniques for throws, and then just step to the side. After some regular throws we were taught some trick shots, and then played some games. I wasn't thinking much of axe throwing when it was mentioned as a birthday game plan, but it was actually a ton of fun. For all my competitive athletes, this is the place to go. I decided to stop by the Lazy Axe for some random Saturday fun and I am glad I did. As a walk in, I paid $27 for a full hour of axe time which came with a friendly and helpful "Axepert" who showed me the best ways to throw the axes, critiqued my form, and had me hitting bullseyes in no time! The staff in general were very friendly and enthusiastic about showing me ways to enjoy this relatively young sport originating from Canada. I learned that they host league nights, and that they even have someone who is nationally ranked that attends. His special throw is the, "canadian flick" (I think) which is where one leans in, and well... flicks the axe at the target. I learned there are many ways to throw an axe over the course of the hour so I was never bored and I felt like I had plenty of time to enjoy myself. There was the standard double handed over the head toss, the single handed toss (my favorite), the flick, the underhanded trick shot, the double axe over head toss at two targets, same thing with the underhanded, and this really hard one where you sort of scissor a overhand and underhand at the same time at two different targets. I was... sort of successful at some of those but definitely would need to be a regular to get good enough to be consistent. They also taught me two or three games you can play with people in your group. So between the lessons, trick shots, and games, I had plenty of things to do for the hour I was there alone. Which if you think about it, is impressive. If I had been with a group, just talking and enjoying everyones company, that hour would have flown by. If you are looking for a fun and creative way to enjoy an hour with a date, or group of friends, or just solo, check this place out. Axe throwing is fun! They have a good online reservation system for groups which I recommend if you are planning to go with a large (4+) group because from what I hear, they can get busy. Especially in the evening time on a Saturday. Just remember to follow the rules, listen to your Axepert, be aware of your surroundings, and please, just don't be an asshole. These are nice people running a nice business with a fun name. No need to hit anything or anyone other than the actual targets with your axe which is really easy to do... when you are paying attention and nice. If you end up going you shouldn't forget to ask about their rewards card. 5-6 visits gets you a free hour. Honestly, I have spent $20-$30 dollars on some things where I had way less fun than what I got out of this experience. It was absolutely worth it and maybe even considering joining a league and socializing with a nice group of axe throwing folk one day. Visit, enjoy! read more

One of my staff members suggested the Lazy Axe for a staff bonding event because it was the cheapest axe throwing place in Albany and it had good reviews, so we decided to give it a try! I had a few questions, so I called in advance and the guy who answered was very kind and helpful. I had some concerns about how cost efficient it would be for myself and my 9 staff members to play only for an hour, and the guy was understanding and said that the instructor does a 5-10 minute lesson, and then the rest of the time, there is enough time to play. Also, since we were doing a custom booking outside of regular hours, we would be the only ones there and would be able to use more than one lane. It came out to about $20 per person which is a great deal for what we got! Our instructor, Mark, was really fun and encouraging. Only one person on staff knew how to throw, but the rest didn't, and he was able to quickly teach us all. We didn't end up using more than one lane, but each axe throw took about 2 minutes, so everyone had plenty of time to play. Mark also didn't rush us out at the end, either - he let us finish out the game and go a little bit over time, which we were all really grateful for. My staff member who goes axe throwing regularly said the axes were light (at other places, they have heavier options), so if you're a seasoned pro at axe throwing, it may not be as challenging as you'd like it to be, but for a beginner like me, it was a good challenge! The place is on the smaller side - I believe there are about 8-10 lanes and we only used one for the 10 of us, but we spread out a little so I can imagine if there were a lot of other people there, it would have been a little crowded. They also don't serve food, but they let you bring food, just an FYI. All in all, I would totally come back - whether with a group, or with a smaller group of friends. read more

My husband and I came to the Lazy Axe to celebrate my birthday....and we had a blast!! We were greeted warmly by Mark, and he went over the rules and showed us different throwing techniques. Neither of us had done this before, and our throws obviously needed some tweaking- and Mark was so friendly and helpful.... it resulted in improved throws! We also had the help of Christian ...equally as fun, friendly and helpful! He engaged us in a few fun games, which was a nice way to add some friendly competition! So recently my wife and I were trying to make plans about where to take our nephew out for his birthday and we both thought about axe throwing! We've done it before and knew how fun it was so we decided to do a quick google search for places in the capital district that were available since we only knew about 2 - one we drove past multiple times and another we've visited prior. I have to say that coming here was an "axecellent" choice - yes puns intended. Located off route 5 or central avenue which ever your more familiar with, across from the car max dealership is this wonderful hidden gem of a business. Outside your probably thinking that it looks small, but inside it's jam packed with excitement and fun. If I can remember correctly there are 5 double lanes and one singular inside for you to bring your friends, family, or even office party to have a great time and throw some axes. Our "axepert" (instructor) was super awesome and friendly - shout out to Julia who made our experience there fun with showing us a couple trick shots that were certainly fun to learn and even attempt. As well as having us play a couple games for our group. Inside the atmosphere is definitely oriented around the axe throwing experience - not like at the other location we've been to at farshot - in downtown Albany which yes has knife throwing and archery, but has more of a bar vibe when you first enter. Above all else they do have a few set of rules there pertaining to safety, in which they do go over with you before throwing any hardware - one rule they have that certainly is going to easily become your favorite catch phrase while putting here or any other axe throwing location is "done be an axehole". And yes you can get this on a shirt as well as a sticker to remind all of your friends what not to be As far as food or drinks - there is no food options there as of yet. For drinks they do have a small cooler in which they offer a small selection of assorted drinks. Nothing alcoholic (for those who may be wondering). Also they do have competition axes that you purchase to take home with you after you've thrown. I did not inquire about bringing your own throwing axe. But I did see that they offer league competitions there. So if you're ever wanting to join a league or start your own axe throwing team, then this is certainly the place to come and sing up! What a great experience! We had no idea what to expect, but really wanted to try axe throwing! The place is clean , well organized and staff are friendly and helpful, it was $23 an hour if paid in advance, on line, or $25 at the door as a walk in. We paid and signed the waiver, absolving them of any responsibility if we somehow hurt anyone or ourselves. Brie was our staff person who gently guided us and instructed us on all the safety rules and how to throw an axe. She was pleasant, fun and kept a relatively low profile, allowing us to have fun together. She instructed us on the various ways to hold an axe. We had many practice runs and then played quite a few games. I was appreciative that SHE kept score for us. It really was a lot of fun and we all definitely felt we would love to do it again. The other staff members were friendly and helpful as well. One of the staff members was a very skilled axe thrower and he was happy to provide concrete advice and instruction on how to improve. We had an excellent corporate team building event at The Lazy Axe last week. The Axe-perts worked with each one of us so closely that we all had axes sticking to the boards. One person took the time to work closely with one of our staff and helped him to be very successful at sticking the throws for points. We had fun and became closer as a corporate team. Came to the lazy axe and had a great time. There was 2 of us in our party and we were able to use a double lane, so we could throw continuously. This was super fun, and made our hour well worth it. We were instructed by Colby. He was very helpful in giving us techniques to improve our throws. He also had some games for us to play which was super fun. The facility is a good size as they have around 5 double lanes and one single lane. They seem to be able to accommodate a lot of people. We lucked out as we ended up being the only ones in the whole place !! Definitely would recommend the lazy axe for a fun experience. We had a bachelorette party today and had such a great time. Josh, our instructor, was such a good sport with our group being a bit crazy. We laughed a lot and really enjoyed our axe throwing games and conversation. The party room was a comfortable size.
