Second Story Books is worth the drive or long Metro ride from Washington, D.C. Housed in a large…read morewarehouse within walking distance of the Twinbrook Metro station, Second Story Books houses over 500,000 used books on literally every topic. Want three aisles of kids books like Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys? Go here. Need every book C.S. Lewis wrote? Stop by Second Story Books. After visiting nearby ZavaZone with our seven-year-old daughter, we stopped into Second Story for a few minutes, which easily turned into an hour. Every book is 50% off. We left with 15 books for just under $21. The books are well organized and maps help navigate visitors to each section, but know that the warehouse's narrow book aisles can get cramped. It adds to the appeal! There are even harder-to-find rooms with other items like posters for sale. They also sell CDs and DVDs. Staff are helpful. I lost my wallet and within an hour a staff member messaged me on Facebook letting me know they found it and it was safe at the checkout desk. If you have used books, Second Story Books buys them from people.

Not too crowded which I liked as it can get pretty tight since there's many books and many shelves. Service was fine although I didn't really talk to many people while there (was more preoccupied with finding the books and checking them out). I'd say this place has great value as the books i got (3) were charged a total of just under $5. I can see why the staff put up flyers stating to be mindful with how many books the customers get as they're priced pretty low, allowing you to collect a decent amount. I'll definitely be back to check this place out again :)

The bar is quaint and cute. Not a vast menu, but it's not needed! Love the local select beers that are available although I opted for the gin cocktail. Very reasonably priced. It's very quiet during the day, quite a few there to read and work in a quiet space and it serves that purpose well. I've also visited in the evening before where a book club meeting was ending and a D&D campaign was beginning and it was quite lively, but still a great vibe. I've had 2 visits now with many more to come. Store workers were super friendly and greeting me upon entering and looking around. Bartender was friendly as well and seemed to enjoy engaging with the guests.

It's larger than I thought it might be - two stories. While not the best stocked bookstore I've ever been to, Backwater offers more than just books. It has a bar upstairs and it's set up for live music as well. It has some great seating for opening a book to read a few pages to see if you want to take it home. The customer service was great as well. Folks in Ellicott City are lucky to have this amazing bookshop. I'll definitely be back in the future (hopefully for a shop, drink, and music next time)!

Physical bookstores are few and far between but this one is a nice gem in Frederick. It's big, nice…read moreselection of books and they have done a good job of shifting to other retail things. Toys, games, stationary, music, etc it feels up to date. The Starbucks inside is big with plenty of seating and drinks are solid. Service is good. The staff here are overall helpful and friendly which is really refreshing. As a Lego nerd I was really surprised with their selection which was impressive for a bookstore. Decent deals on their legos and their books. It's nice to support local and smaller businesses that are getting harder and harder to find. This place is a cozy retail space that has 3rd space vibes for you to hang out for a bit while you shop and get a coffee. Would recommend and will be back.

Almost everything is identical as to when they really were growing. That can be said about this location. It felt like it was built a long while ago and they haven't done anything to update it as of yet. Obviously the sections have changed a bit in terms of size and what is offered overall. I found it surprising that they still had a vibrant DVD section (although I am sure they switched over to Blu-ray). The café in the store was going strong while I walked through. I will have to say that my purpose from coming in here was to take a trip down memory lane, and that was about it. I didn't need a book, or magazine, I just wanted to dip my toe into a bit of nostalgia.
