I'm so glad that I have finally paid a meaningful visit to Rumpelstiltskin Yarn Store recently. Rumpelstiltskin, located on the R St corridor, is quite a long-standing establishment in Sacramento that has been providing the Sacramento fiber art community with supplies and knowledge for over 50 years! Rumpelstiltskin sells a wide selection of high-quality yarns, fiber art tools, and other supplies for crocheting, knitting, spinning, and weaving, so there's definitely a great variety of products offered here for various interests. Perhaps because the skill level of my two fiber art hobbies, crocheting and knitting, are quite elementary and have not improved much over the years, I've so far had all my yarn needs met at the more conventional arts and crafts stores of the big box variety. But as I am getting more serious about my yarn hobbies, I'm now interested in finding stores that offer more specialized products and even provide classes that will help me improve in my crafts skills. I am also looking to connect more with the fiber art community in Sacramento because my venture into joining that community so far has shown me how warm and welcoming fiber artists are and it is totally possible to learn from seasoned hobbyists and pros/teachers if one puts their mind to it. I've even connected with some very local yarn enthusiasts at my local library and I'm sure they all have visited Rumpelstiltskin. On this visit, I saw lots of exclusive brands and types of yarn made of much better material than I'm used to using. From basic wool to more specialized Merino, Alpaca, and Shetland, there were many different kinds available. One I particular liked was the cashmere wool which felt heavenly. I learned that Rumpelstiltskin makes it a point to partner with fiber farms and other small boutique fiber suppliers to source yarn and other fiber products that are not only exclusive, but that are truly local and US-made as much as possible. Rumpelstiltskin even shares the stories behind each brand they carry and even hosts "Farm to Needle" events to introduce some of their thoughtfully curated products that are specially selected for their quality and uniqueness. As such I noticed that the prices of their products are definitely several times higher than that of regular arts and crafts stores, but again Rumpelstiltskin sells really high-quality yarns and supplies. I did not have any questions for staff during my visit, but I saw a class taking place and noticed that besides the looks of concentration, it was smiles all around as everyone was really enjoying their class, so I'm also going to look into taking a class or joining in one of Rumpelstiltskin's events. Just from a quick glance at their website, I see offerings of beginner's knitting classes for adults and kids, an embroidery intro class, a felted slippers class which sounds super interesting and practical, a sweater class for those who are ready for bigger projects, and even basket coiling, spindle spinning, spinning wheel, and weaving classes. Besides the classes that have costs associated and private lessons for those who want 1:1 instruction, there are also monthly and periodic free knitting circles for kids and social stitch events. I did not interact with staff today, so I can't speak on customer service, but maybe on a future shopping trip, I'll hopefully be helped if needed. In short, Rumpelstiltskin really is a wonderful staple in the Sacramento community for fiber art beginners, hobbyists, and pro-level enthusiasts alike and I'm so glad I know more about Rumpelstiltskin now so I can feel comfortable to come back for higher-quality yarn and supplies for more serious projects as well as for classes and events to connect with our local fiber art community.

My man found a super cool postcard from Balboa Park in San Diego that is over 100 years old and hand painted, we used to live there and loved it. A Frightening and Unacceptable Experience at the 57th Street Antiques Mall…read more My husband and I visited The 57th Street Antiques Mall in Sacramento on October 10th. We had visited previously and genuinely enjoyed the experience, so we decided to return for another afternoon of shopping and a nice lunch. I expected to spend at least $100 on antiques and other items. Unfortunately, what we experienced this time was so disturbing that we will never return. Almost immediately after we walked through the door, a male employee began following me around the store. He was not wearing anything that identified him as an employee, so I had no idea who he was or why he was following me. The situation became genuinely frightening when he corralled me into a small booth where there was no clear way to exit. He then took a photograph of me with his phone. I cannot adequately describe how frightened I felt. I was on the verge of a panic attack, and had my husband not come into view when he did, I was so terrified that I was prepared to defend myself. I have never felt so unsafe while simply trying to shop. Unfortunately, that was not the end of the experience. Later, while examining a display of rings and considering whether any might be suitable for the book-launch gift boxes I am putting together, an exceptionally tall man approached me and stood so close behind me that I could feel his body heat against my back. This was intimidating and completely unnecessary. Meanwhile, employees appeared to be following my Asian husband around the store as though they suspected him of being a criminal. One employee moved so quickly to keep up with him that she nearly knocked over a shelf of porcelain figurines. My husband was thankfully unaware of what was happening, but watching this behavior only added to my distress. Let me be clear: customers should not have to feel intimidated, followed, cornered, photographed, or treated like criminals when they enter a business. If employees have legitimate concerns, there are professional and respectful ways to address them. Making paying customers feel threatened is not one of them. We returned because we had enjoyed our first visit. We came prepared to spend money and have a pleasant day. Instead, I left feeling frightened, unwelcome, and deeply disappointed. The saddest part is that this experience has permanently changed how I feel about a place I had previously enjoyed. I will take my business elsewhere, where I can browse in peace, feel safe, and be treated with basic courtesy and respect. The 57th Street Antiques Mall has lost our business. I would much rather spend my money at establishments where customer service means helping customers, not making them feel as though they are being watched, pursued, or accosted.

I fell head-over-heels with a custom tourmaline ring that was put in the case that morning. They were super accommodating to our budget and told us to come back whenever it ever needs a cleaning. An issue with one of the settings came up a few weeks later and they connected us with their trusted jeweler (Aquamarine @ Fair Oak and Arden) and it was fixed a few days later. After contacting Mike and Greg's, my wife and I paid them a visit at their shop. We went into detail of how terri le the estate sale experience was, including how a few of the pro buyers would down tight lie to score a better price. In other words - preying on the ill-informed and inexperienced. After my sob story, they informed me that the price of gold had already dropped and that it was about to drop again. On top of that, they had already almost reached their max allowance for purchasing. This meant that I needed to make the sale that day to secure the best going rate for gold at that time. I understand there's gold weight, there's gold melt weight, etc. So when we left that day, we felt pretty good about things. Then I had that seller's remorse. And damn it, I was right to. I sold them a 6.5oz, solid gold charm bracelet, some gold earrings and a necklace. The charm bracelet had a late 1890s solid gold, $5 coin with aruby horseshoe surrounding it. It would've cost about $1000 for a good jeweler to remove the horseshoe. Based on research, even a good condition value appraisal would have brought in ÷$30k. We left the shop holding a check for approximately $7k. I know. Should've done my research, it's my fault. He was a good salesman. In the end, if I'd done my due diligence and found a buyer (which I now have), I stood to make at least $32k. So don't fall for their pricing tactics and definitely get a 2nd and maybe a 3rd quote before selling anything. Especially them. Update - the price of spot gold has increased from $2100 per Oz (June 2025) to $3740 per Oz (Sep 2025). His was quote was for $1200. Again he was adamant that the price of gold was dropping fast and that I'd loose big time if I waited even two days.
