Paul's Cafe

Paul's Cafe

They offer loads of lovely traditional food, sandwiches and great fry ups! We would always be in for a sarni, which were always fresh and made with a smile! The tea, I must say, is really great, and really cheap too, much like all the rest of the food. It might not look like much but Pauls Cafe is certainly up there with the bast of em!

There are also a large number of smaller businesses around the area that take advantage of Paul's convenient location. On my trip to Paul's it was a horrible, rainy day outside and I was cold and in a rubbish mood. Their rustic tomato soup made a very good effort in warming my cold bones and cheering me up. It was really quite cheap, my soup and coffee came to below £4 and no one can complain about those prices. The lady behind the counter was pleasant and very social with all her locals. A very nice, quiet place to grab a bite, as long as you make sure not to be around at lunch time for the papers!

Jumping Java Kitchen - Huge mugs of Joe

I came to be at Jumping Java by a strange sequence of events; firstly I had ordered some event…read moreaccessories that didn't arrive so I had to venture to Bangor to pick some new ones up, then I went in to a café further up High Street but unfortunately they stopped serving food at 2pm, then on the trip back to my car an unbelievable hunger came over me and I found myself stumbling in to Jumping Java with an ache in my belly. To be honest I had never really considered eating here. JJ has a canteen vibe to it, everything from the red trays you collect your food on to the plastic seats. It's bright and airy inside and there's loads of seating. If you're not with kids you might want to sit towards the front of the café to avoid the play area. I ordered a Caesar Wrap and a flat white. On ordering the chef came out of the kitchen to tell me that they didn't have any lettuce and 'was rocket ok?' - at this point I was so famished I would have eaten weeds so that was no issue, but I liked that he came out to tell me. When the wrap came I was shocked about how packed it was, chicken was literally falling out. Even the presentation was top notch, which I had not expected. The wrap cost £5.25 and was worth every penny. The service was great - from the server to the chef they were amiable and helpful. One tiny negative was that they were slow to clear tables but it was busy and there was one lone server who was concentrating on feeding rather than clearing which is understandable. Overall Jumping Java is a perfect High Street pit stop if you want to dump your kids in the play area and get a bit if peace and quiet or if you want to take advantage of their free WiFi.

It is just another coffee shop for middle class mothers to sit and catch up with their friends. There is nothing the matter with that, but it just isn't for me. There is a wee play park in this place which I guess is great for the clientelle that they are looking for but as far as I'm concerned I'd rather have some good music on or just somewhere to sit and do my crossword. Nothing the matter with this place, although it is a little bit pricey.

Vegetarian café with great food and ambiance (4.5/5 Green Stars)…read more We stopped here en route to Carlingford on a friend's recommendation and all three of us were very happy we did. The place is lovely - the café is filled with light and plants and the surroundings are beautiful. Mum is a picky eater but she relished the mushroom quiche and finished the entire piece even though it was huge! (Seriously - about three times the size of portions elsewhere.) My brother loved his herbed rice bowl and I liked the organic porridge with fruit and the pistachio plum cake. The only kink was that several items arrived much later than the food - the coffees, bread, and honey for my porridge (I had already finished my porridge by then). The store is filled with great stuff - fresh fruit and veg, and a good selection of some of the most ethical products. Weirdly, the Strandfield website contains no info other than an address, so you have to rely on reviews to get info in advance. The lunch menu is mostly comprised of sourdough pizza, salads (including a quinoa bowl and herbed rice bowl), and sandwiches - see menu photo. There are also lots of bakery items, including freshly baked scones, cakes and wheaten bread (which was really good - I bought one to take home). I'm giving Strandfield café 4.5 out of 5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, for these reasons: · I didn't actually notice at the time but the menu is 100% vegetarian! · Strandfield uses free range eggs from their own farm. · My porridge was made with organic oats · Flowers and plants in the café come from Stranfield's own nursery · The grocer sources local and organic fruits and vegetables along free range eggs, and organic health foods · The store stocks a really good selection of ethical goods - I could do most of my shopping here if I lived here. · Strandfield would benefit from providing more info (on the website or menu) on ingredient sourcing.
