The staff are friendly, care for community and the environment, don't have greedy shareholders who only care for loadsa money and it has a delightful ambiance. Our son had seen them on the Velveteen Facebook and had ordered them up for his Valentine with an afternoon tea box. Ooh it was a Homer S moment. Must have....must have. I thought I was back in the carribean with Norwegian Cruises and cruise director Nelson was looking after us again. Oh well we are such stuff as dreams are made. Anyway that did it. On went the layers and headgear and gloves. Out into the wild snowscape, feet scrunching and sinking down into the soft snow. By the time I got to the delightful V Rabbit they'd sold out of the choccy strawberries, damn and blast nevertheless we got a £10 treat box with all sorts of sweet treats, cakes, tarts and scones and we got cappuccino £2.5. Everything in here is home-made and proper made. Not at all like the cakes from the industrial bakeries we have along Hill Street but how you would make it at home. The photos show the goodie box and separately a small lemon drizzle cake and a piece of Victoria sponge. The lemon drizzle was perfect. The Victoria sponge picture is half the portion as we split it between two. These are really scrummy cakes and I remember that taste from years ago. Victoria sponge made properly, in particular, has a distinctive unique taste and texture. I'm glad I went. I sure wasn't disappointed. I would have liked the chocolate covered strawberries but hey ho some other time.

It has to be many years since I last had a coffee here, as I prefer other places that don't open on Sunday. I also identify its main customer base as the younger generation. I was surprised to find it almost empty on an early Sunday afternoon when my memory was that it was usually full. It's not a big place by any means and currently operates a one way system - one door in and a different door exiting. They are also only serving coffees etc in paper/plastic cups (even Starbucks have locked away the ceramics.) We had three coffees (cappuccino) and an iced drink. The coffees were ace and the service friendly. Our son wasn't impressed by his iced drink - he thought it insipid and watery. The piped music was great, but I must say I found the seating uncomfortable and the furnishings were as jaded as I now feel most days. Next time I want a Sunday afternoon coffee and I'm right next door I'll likely pop in but I'm afraid I do prefer a comfy seat.

When I was in the first time I noted that they were offering take away salads, filled croissants and other sandwich choices. So as I had four to feed I returned at lunch for two toasted ham & pineapple French baguettes to which I had cheese, onion and sweetcorn added. I also got a chicken salad with the usual lettuce, tomatoes and onion and added sun dried tomato a boiled egg with very good Caesar dressing. I opted for a ham & cheese croissant. All the food tasted great, the portions were generous and as the food was being freshly prepared I decided to go for flat white number two. The two ladies behind the counter were friendly and welcoming, and doing their best to social distance from each other. One did all the food prep and the other the coffee prep. Each one was careful to apply hand sterilisation after each food prep/taking payment. There's no doubt that this place and Cafe Maya in town are on a par for absolutely ace coffee - I couldn't decide who is best between them - they offer the very best coffees around and that'll do nicely.

The staff remain as cheerful as ever, despite the fact that their business must be suffering desperately, and their reasonable prices remain just the same. It's takeaway only here once more with another lockdown underway but the politicos won't call it a lockdown. These folks still get paid, enjoy self nominated pay rises (imagine being able to decide on your own pay increases and who have recently awarded their support staff (actually family members in many cases)) a 40% pay (and related pension) hike. Maya like so many businesses have lots of stuff at a counter near the door to sanitise and here's the thing - the guy making the coffee can do so, I can go in, stand 3/4 feet from him and hand him cash to pay and take a coffee and change from him. But if he had this machine in his kitchen I couldn't go in for a free coffee in his home. I could work with him all day but I couldn't sit for a beer with him in a local bar for half an hour but we could meet in the local church for an hours service. So go figure. So do remember how important it is to help small independents especially in these strange times when the only certainties are death, taxes and money grabbing, dishonest politicians.

The coffees were very good indeed. The large breakfast was about £7 and it was not the typical fry up that we opt for as it hadn't any potato or soda breads, but instead was served with a slice of Yellow Door sourdough bread, which was all the better for good butter and being toasting on one side only. The food here, particularly the back bacon, was properly cooked as all to often sausages, black & white puddings are overcooked and bacon is served with rind that isn't properly crisped - which it should always be. The eggs with the big breakfast can be ordered fried, poached or scrambled. There were breakfast choices too for the more health conscious and I glanced at a mashed avocado choice on a specials board. The board also offered a sausage, bacon & egg filled soda (£6) but still no potato bread in sight. Oddly while the specials board listed prices, the mains menu had no price details at all. The sourdough bread here, so named, is from a local small restaurant chain called the Yellow Door. I believe this chain now does visitor catering at Hillsborough castle, Co Down. I've reviewed the yellow door cafe in Portadown a few months ago. The seating here was comfortable and the service was prompt and friendly. It's good to see new business in the new Spring, March 2020. On balance we'll likely return here for breakfast rather than our usual Hill Street place. We might even ask for potato bread instead of sourdough as old habits......

I'll explain: we are locked down at home and can't go out. So a week or so ago, knowing our plight, two of our friends arrived at our door with two cappuccinos from this female owned business and stood well back from our front door (other friends sent us flowers). The lady owner of this place has maintained food and coffee service six days a week (not Sunday) all over lockdown from a serving hatch. Fair play to her. I wasn't going to do a review just on two cappuccinos even though they were very good cappuccinos. I'd gone to this business a few times over the years but it was long ago. Today changed the dynamic when our friends arrived once more with two cappuccinos and two sausage rolls and stood well back. Now I'm fussy about sausage rolls and I'm conscious that those with less scruples know they can get away with very cheap, fatty 'meat' and cheap fat laden anaemic looking barely cooked pastry. If you are local and you want to try cheap to make (but not cheap to buy) industrially made sausage rolls go to the Shelbourne bakery. So back to this place. I was sceptical about the sausage rolls and my scepticism was totally misplaced. They were delicious. The sausage meat did not taste at all cheap or fatty. We heated them and the aroma was lovely. The spice kick was about right - really good taste - and the best surprise of all our friends said that the owner makes them herself and together with minced pork she had added chorizo, goats cheese and jalapeño. This is what happens when a business concentrates on quality first on what they are making to sell, rather than simply being only interested in maximising profit regardless by making food as cheap as possible while staying legal. The sausage roll pastry too was delicious. It was light, golden. flavoursome and moreish. So we've become instant fans. The owner usually has a blackboard out front with a joke or an acerbic comment and she sure has a healthy, cheeky sense of humour - her observation style is more akin to how Chrissy Teigen recently expressed the (thankfully ex) President Trump years rather than Plato. We joked a bit about the steep stair climb up to dine; the welcome was warm and the menus awaited us. It was two courses on their early-bird menu (£19.95) and early dining suits us. We also dine around and chose here as a new place to try out. The first challenge we faced was could we make it main and dessert rather than starter/main - we could - so the next challenge was choosing dessert as most of us wanted every dessert on the slate. We got to try some of their wheaten bread and it tasted superb. I think they sell the loaves. Two of us opted for vegetarian pasta which had great taste, but the spinach marred my dish; I found it chewed down into a ball and became an unpleasant eat. Might be worth swapping to basil. If I had the dish again I'd leave it off. Most of the others opted for their club sandwich main topped with fried egg and one had fish & chips: all declared their food very good. Why is it a club sandwich well it's Chicken and Lettuce Under Bacon. Desserts were delicious; the Eton Mess was the favourite choice. I had the creme brulee instead and I enjoyed it immensely, but the shortbread on the side wasn't my taste. I like it buttery, melting. My guess is it's not made with butter. The truth of it is that almost everything here is so very good that you become critical of the parts that aren't just as top notch. We finished with cappuccino and lattes and one tea but again I had a great cappuccino on arrival that carried me through to departure. We had arrived early and were delighted to see that the restaurant picked up and the atmosphere was great; despite becoming real busy with happy diners the wait staff remained completely attentive to our needs.
