Four of us were in the nearby Canal Court hotel for our Sunday lunch when coffee was suggested…read more I thought it sensible to go next door to Grounded as I'd remembered that their coffee is ace and certainly well ahead of this hotel in quality but certainly not price. It has to be many years since I last had a coffee here, as I prefer other places that don't open on Sunday. I also identify its main customer base as the younger generation. I was surprised to find it almost empty on an early Sunday afternoon when my memory was that it was usually full. It's not a big place by any means and currently operates a one way system - one door in and a different door exiting. They are also only serving coffees etc in paper/plastic cups (even Starbucks have locked away the ceramics.) We had three coffees (cappuccino) and an iced drink. The coffees were ace and the service friendly. Our son wasn't impressed by his iced drink - he thought it insipid and watery. The piped music was great, but I must say I found the seating uncomfortable and the furnishings were as jaded as I now feel most days. Next time I want a Sunday afternoon coffee and I'm right next door I'll likely pop in but I'm afraid I do prefer a comfy seat.

Menu could be more extensive to suit its long opening hours, it really offers nothing in the way of hot food, apart from soup but what you get is good. This turned out surprisingly well, but when I first looked at the pizza menu I wasn't impressed…read more I was expecting to have a pizza topped with anchovies, black olives, capers and prawns, but no, not as much as a sniff of any one these super pizza ingredients. The pizza and pasta menu is mostly chicken orientated with some beef, some pork and some vegetarian. We opted for a chicken based 18" between two with a Diet Coke and a sparkling water. The sparkling water was a generous portion. The Coke was 330ml which is fine as I'm now refusing to accept 200ml bottles because I'm really sick of Coca Cola just ripping people off: they claim 'rising costs' for gassy artificially sweetened filtered water so how come I can now buy champagne cheaper ml by ml. So our pizza was rectangular, impressively huge and cooked in intense wood fire heat. This produced a thin, delicious pizza base. The chicken was simply that, fresh chicken breast with tomato sauce, fresh tomatoes, red cabbage and, surprisingly, lettuce, not your usual pizza ingredient but welcome nonetheless. The mozzarella cheese seems real and not that rubbish made in a laboratory without any real cheese in it. The pizza was liberally dosed with garlic mayonnaise and a chilli mayonnaise sauce. The mayonnaise is factory produced and vegetable oil based. The chilli and garlic mayos were also on each table if more is needed. So all in all it was better than I thought, with pretty good service and friendly young staff. It's 3.5 stars and fish and olives would make it 5 star.

It's take away only for now and there are strict limits on customer numbers. When I was in the first time I noted that they were offering take away salads, filled croissants and other sandwich choices. So as I had four to feed I returned at lunch for two toasted ham & pineapple French baguettes to which I had cheese, onion and sweetcorn added. I also got a chicken salad with the usual lettuce, tomatoes and onion and added sun dried tomato a boiled egg with very good Caesar dressing. I opted for a ham & cheese croissant. All the food tasted great, the portions were generous and as the food was being freshly prepared I decided to go for flat white number two. The two ladies behind the counter were friendly and welcoming, and doing their best to social distance from each other. One did all the food prep and the other the coffee prep. Each one was careful to apply hand sterilisation after each food prep/taking payment. There's no doubt that this place and Cafe Maya in town are on a par for absolutely ace coffee - I couldn't decide who is best between them - they offer the very best coffees around and that'll do nicely.

Tray bakes are very tasty and sandwiches are fresh...but I have ONE niggle about the buns (and not only here in most places) they are not covered!!! They are sitting out beside the till exposed to the elements, a small cabinet would be a much better idea. This is a small place on Newrys main Street, just down from the Market, and it is always busy which is a pretty good sign. I love the pastries I have to say, even though they are not covered, they are just about the nicest in town. I really do recommend it here if you out for a spot of shopping and looking for a tasty quick sandwich

This time, once again, our visit was for breakfast before going off to experience the European festival at Slieve Gullion forest park dominated by Polish & Hungarian folk who have made our area their home, their places of work and their and their kids futures and they are very welcome (I wonder if we'll have European festivals up to 2021?!). We both opted for cappuccino with quality sausage, fluffy scrambled egg breakfasts and plump fresh soda bread. Everything about this place is quality but there's one irritation albeit minor but high in the frustration scale; the knives won't easily cut through the soda bread so next time I will ask for steak knives, which does sound a tad silly but it will make life easier. Talk about first world problems. Oh and when we got to the European event we found we could have enjoyed Polish and Hungarian fare, still more first world problems.

We joked a bit about the steep stair climb up to dine; the welcome was warm and the menus awaited us. It was two courses on their early-bird menu (£19.95) and early dining suits us. We also dine around and chose here as a new place to try out. The first challenge we faced was could we make it main and dessert rather than starter/main - we could - so the next challenge was choosing dessert as most of us wanted every dessert on the slate. We got to try some of their wheaten bread and it tasted superb. I think they sell the loaves. Two of us opted for vegetarian pasta which had great taste, but the spinach marred my dish; I found it chewed down into a ball and became an unpleasant eat. Might be worth swapping to basil. If I had the dish again I'd leave it off. Most of the others opted for their club sandwich main topped with fried egg and one had fish & chips: all declared their food very good. Why is it a club sandwich well it's Chicken and Lettuce Under Bacon. Desserts were delicious; the Eton Mess was the favourite choice. I had the creme brulee instead and I enjoyed it immensely, but the shortbread on the side wasn't my taste. I like it buttery, melting. My guess is it's not made with butter. The truth of it is that almost everything here is so very good that you become critical of the parts that aren't just as top notch. We finished with cappuccino and lattes and one tea but again I had a great cappuccino on arrival that carried me through to departure. We had arrived early and were delighted to see that the restaurant picked up and the atmosphere was great; despite becoming real busy with happy diners the wait staff remained completely attentive to our needs. I do hope we return soon, especially as there's another main I want to try.

We only order here occasionally and I very much doubt it will even be occasional hereafter. We have our mobile phones through Three so we can avail of occasional wantu deals but even these are limited here in Northern Ireland. I could get a free Costa coffee through wantu in Aberdeen, Cardiff or Cornwall but I can't get one in Belfast or Newry. The wantu app offers a free 7 inch domino pizza but only on Wednesdays so we both turned up in this edge of town place having hit the use now button on the app and receiving a code. We were told at the counter that it was an on-line order only. The app gave no hint that this was only available on line. The app provides an order code. The domino website to order makes it nigh on impossible to figure how to proceed using the wantu deal. I tried and failed. It didn't recognise the code number. We then asked for some help in store and we were ignored. We were just left standing. Several staff were in store, they weren't busy and certainly disinterested in us. I've since gone on line to dominos website to lodge a complaint about zero service. Even this process isn't straightforward when it really should be. It's money only here customers don't matter. If they don't get dough from you then you won't get dough from them.
