It was a bank holiday weekend just after the COVID restrictions had been lifted in May2021and all the places I tried to book were full - except The Langton. I wonder why......... We managed to book a table for four on a Sunday evening. It was a lovely evening and many people were enjoying a drink in the sunshine on the terrace. We sat inside at a quiet table and the first thing I should say is that all the staff were very helpful and pleasant. However, things went downhill as far as the food was concerned - and even the first house red wine I tried, a Cab Sav, was very poor. This was readily exchanged for a house Merlot, which was a tad better. Sadly, three of the four of us complained about the main course: the salmon was hard and in a garnish of pickled melon soaked in what seemed like vinegar and that was awful. The roast lamb - the last portion available - with its roasted potatoes, was tough and it all seemed as though it had been just heated up from a previous meal. It was very difficult to cut - but that might be because the knives were old and blunt! No, it really was tough when eating it. The pork belly [chosen by two of us] was a poor cut with too much fat and though it was tasty with a nice apple sauce; the roast potatoes and the meat were covered in a lot of gravy so the potatoes went very soft and stodgy. Why don't they supply gravy in a side jug, so the customer can add as required? The Yorkshire pudding was awful. However, after we had made our views known, the staff were very understanding about it and they recompensed us satisfactorily.
The sticky toffee pudding, chosen by all four of us, was satisfactory - but what was meant to be a lovely meal given as a treat was really spoiled by the poor food quality. It's the second time that I've been there and the first time the food was unimpressive and the place very noisy and crowded. This time it wasn't - so maybe COVID does have some benefits! I think it will be my last visit there. read more
