What a great pub…read more My wife organised an extended family get together here last weekend. We arrived a couple of hours early -- quite a trek from the Isle of Wight -- so asked a local and found a lovely walk to a pooh-stick bridge that starts 100m north of the pub. We then followed the burbling river (thames?) downstream even spotting a trout in the clear water. More pooh-sticks on the way back. There is a small triangle of grass over the land from the pub that doubles as its beer garden, very pleasant sipping a pint of Doom Bar, then into the pub for lunch. They had allocated us the old skittles room and had set up a long table on one side, with the skittle lane on the other that the rug rats used to play on. Food was splendid. Starters included: seafood linguine with muscles, clams, butterfly prawns ... yum; a subtle broad bean and mozzarella salad; and stuffed artichoke. Mains included: Shin of beef, a strong stewed meat with oodles of flavour; duck breast, a generous portion of meat, beautifully pink; and cornish hake that just melted in the mouth. Puddings were: the best bread and butter pudding I have ever had (and I don't like bread and butter pudding); gooey tangy treacle tart; and some unpasturised british cheeses. Mmmm. Really friendly and accommodating staff, a good local walk along the river, a pretty position and great food. What more could you ask!

If you read through the ancient reviews preceding mine you'll see that one thing hasn't changed:…read moreThe Trout at Tadpole Bridge is located in the middle of nowhere. The middle of nowhere sure is pretty. I stayed overnight here, only a single night first enjoying drinks outside at a picnic table on the lawn. Later that evening, I had a delicious dinner inside, went to bed upstairs, and followed with breakfast here in the morning. So you might say I tried everything The Trout had to offer. I stayed at about 10 different places during 3 weeks in the UK and The Trout might've been one of my favorites. The room was lovely, the building equally so, the food quite good, and the outdoor space 100% inviting. When I think of The Trout and the totality of my experience here the word "lovely" comes to mind. Give the place a try for food, drinks, a room, or an afternoon on the lawn. I'm sure you'll agree.

I have drank many a pimms here and outside it is relaxed and peaceful. However this experience was not as pleasant. We booked a table under "Deacon" for 2.30 and we were asked if we caould move it to 2pm, this cut us short for time in other places but we made it for 2pm. No one greeted us but it is a pub after all so I found our name "BEACON" scrawled across a black board sign on the table (quite embarressing!) We were then left to rot for the next 20 mins, so I helped myself to menus and went to get drinks from the bar. About an hour later we got our very pricey starters each priced about £12. I ordered scallops on a vegetable puree. Not too bad, quite tasty and inventive but luke warm, hmmm. Our maincourses were all good, everyone enjoyed the food, ranging from fish & chips, to seabass to lamb, all looked yummy. I ordered crab, and had to wait ages for the crackers and finger bowl, we were tired of waiting by this time it was in a very rich sauce which one made it rather messy! We recieved no apology for the long waits and maybe if they had gone to the effort of apologising we would go back and give them another chance. But sorry that was your last!
