Caveat: I was unable to actually eat anything, which is in part the reason for my low rating. Please read on for more!
So we turned up here at 8.30 trying to get one of their walk in seats, whereupon I was told immediately that they were fully booked all night and would be unable to seat me. Bit annoying as their Instagram specifically says to turn up later and they'll be able to find you a seat, but on the other hand, they offer takeaway. Problem solved!
As I'm allergic to nuts, I asked the waitress about nuts in one of the laksa dishes which seemed to completely baffle the waitress. Yes, your menu has (N) next to a dish, which means it has nuts. Which nuts is it, and can I have the dish without the nuts? At first she seemed to think every laksa had nuts, by which I was confused given only one of the dishes had the (N) sign. A few minutes (literally this conversation about nuts took 4/5 minutes) later of trying to explain my nut allergy, and she said she would go ask the chef for more info. Again, not a huge problem as it was a bit loud in there, but definitely starting to annoy me.
In this time, we were approached by another waitress who immediately told us that there was no takeaway available as they'd run out of takeaway boxes, despite me emailing the day before to double check that takeaway was available at the restaurant if no seating was available. Of course, she wasn't certain, so then had to go and double check with all the other serving staff before returning.
In hindsight, maybe I was bit more pissed off than I should've been since I didn't have a booking. BUT, I don't appreciate service that has literally no idea what's in the food they're serving, nor do I appreciate having to stand around while the waiters ask each other one by one a question to something they should really know the answer.
And finally, probably the final nail in the coffin for me, was that I don't appreciate their IG account stating that people would be welcome later in the evening only to be quite brusquely turned away, and to not even make an effort to see if they could fit me in. Ggiven there were multiple empty tables that were clearly no longer in use and could've put us in quickly for 15 mins, and that there was a spare table outside.
This is near the end of their 2 week residency at Tolli and I was keen to give it a shot. Unfortunately, the poor handling of service and the lack of foresight in their preparation has left me with quite a poor impression of their ability to run a restaurant. read more
