Always wanted to go to The Lab but it was never open on weekends and being a 9-5er I was unable to ever go, then bam saw it was open on Saturdays so off I went.
It is very unassuming, it is off of payneham road but not St Peters payneham road or closer to the city, way down near Marden intersection.
Literally looks like a medical centre building. You turn in and head to the parking behind, once walking through to the cafe it is super basic and once again the only word I can find is unassuming. The whole 'lab' thing is not excessive, water bottles are in conical flasks and beakers and if you order a latte you will get it in a beaker, sadly I order a triple shot flat white so I didn't get the glory of a beaker.
The menu is clear and concise, you can see the chef and the kitchen which always soothes my soul.
I ordered the 'hot cake' and was so unsure because it was singular but was definitely wanting sweet not savoury.
The people who work there are lovely, I sat and waited for the boyfriend to arrive who promptly ordered eggs with mushrooms and avo.
Whenever I go somewhere new I worry so greatly about the coffee and slightly panic I will be disappointed and the brunch will be ruined but heck The Lab has AWESOME COFFEE I have no idea what beans they use but it was delicious.
In comes the hot cake at HUGE plate worth, dripping in maple syrup with blueberries and strawberries and cream.
Holy heck, so delicious.
Was so happy, it was so decadent and large I actually couldn't finish it so the boyfriend did.
Of course I stole a taste of the boyfriends mushrooms because I know what avo tastes like and I know what poached eggs taste like, the mushrooms were epic they were so delicious. I loved them.
I will be ready to return asap, I would love some other stuff on the menu brunch was but was happy with what they have.
I would love for them to have more thinks in lab items though..... Like maple syrup on the side in a mini conical, the option of a beaker no matter the coffee. Because it is a cool theme it just needs to be stretched a little. read more
