I stopped in at The Kebab Zone recently for takeout. They are located next door to Big Apple Pizzeria and across the street from the RPI Campus near the old School 14 building. This very small eatery is geared towards takeout and delivery (Grub Hub) with very limited seating 7 stools here. They offer Turkish Mediterranean food (halal) including kebabs, gyros, wraps, burgers, dinner plates, mezes, fried appetizers, chips, cold drinks, and desserts (cake & cheesecake slices). They offer discount offers (10 percent off) and specials to RPI students. I ordered a Beef Shish Kebab Wrap ($11.99 plus tax) which comes with choice of sauce and a bag of Lays potato chips. The place was a bit busy with RPI students waiting for their takeout food. I was given a stapled bag in 10 minutes and I head out. However, I open the paper bag in the car and discover they gave me the wrong food which was a grilled chicken plate with veggies and rice. I could've just shrugged it off and eat this instead of beef shish kebab. I walk back into the shop and hand them back the wrong order and they ask how much my order was. I think they lost track of my order since those students before me ordered a lot of food. They make my order on the spot for a beef shish kebab wrap with my choice of fillings including adding hot sauce and extra white sauce too. I was given the chips and more white sauce for dipping. Now the order was correct. The wrap was a good size with a decent amount of grilled chewy beef cubes and fillings inside the soft wrap with savory and spicy flavors and dipping into the white sauce. Overall, the food tasted pretty good. I would probably order from here again, but it was a good thing I checked my order before leaving area. Online delivery drivers are not allowed to open sealed or stapled bags.

Continuing my search for the perfect Doner dinner and happened upon this new spot near RPI in Troy. The reviews online made me optimistic, but boy was I disappointed. The baba ghanoush was the furthest thing from tasting like a baba ghanoush I have ever tried. The addition of lentils was strange to me but I went with it, because well extra protein, but it was completely flavorless and I'm not sure what it's made out of but it's definitely not eggplant. The lamb and beef gyro tasted gamey, which usually points to the meat being bad, not cleaned well before cooking or not prepared well. I couldn't eat it at all. The saving grace of my meal were the spinach and feta pastry and the lentil soup. This meal was a solid 2.5, I can't give it a 3 because the amount of rice in the platter was disappointing if I had decided to eat it, but the rice tasted like it was leftover and rewarmed up. Unfortunately we will not be going back here. I'll be continuing my search for the best Doner and hoping to find one that tastes good and where great service is also provided.

Beef and chicken gyros (or doner as known in most of Europe, original Turkish).

Great place for a casual sandwich or salad. Favorite place for RPI students and staff, this place has thr authentic kebabs from the Middle East. For health conscious, try a variety of salads, my favorite is beef gyros (the real stuff, on a vertical skewer in the photo, not the fake diner stuff) on a Turkish bun. Small seating area but friendIy staff, clean place. I will be back for sure.

Very clean and good food. Wish the rice was flavored instead of boring white rice but chicken was very good.

Traveling within about 5 minutes on the way to visit a good friend, and it happened to be right around lunch time, the opportunity finally came. It's a casual place, lots of 2 and 4 top tables, but what caught my eye when we went in was the cooler full of amazing side options. Then you look up and there's a beautiful oven and a dough station. This is looking great. We sat and ordered lamb kebab and doner kebab. A couple minutes later, a large (~11x17?) wooden tray appeared with a piping hot lavash bread and a plate of dill yogurt sauce. If the meal had stopped there, I would have been a happy camper. We had just had a few pieces when the kebab arrived, each with a pepper, tomato, some red cabbage, and onion. Both meats were authentic and delicious. My favorite way to eat my doner was with a bit of the bread, a bit of the dill sauce, some onion and cabbage, and a bunch of meat - a mini gyro, if you will. We took away about 1/3 of the generous portions and ordered a large mixed plate (all 10 of the sides) and baklava to take to our friend. It's a bit of a drive for us, but any time we're anywhere close, we're going to be back for sit down (if it's mealtime) or takeaway if it's not. I highly recommend you do the same.

The place feels much more modern and inviting now. Our family especially enjoys the beyti kebab, the güveç, and their pide. I haven't tried the pizza yet, but since their pide is very good, I imagine the pizza would also be solid. For me though, the real highlight at Alibaba is the mezze. In Turkish cuisine, grilled meats and kebabs are almost always enjoyed with a variety of mezze. They might technically be sides, but they're a big part of the whole experience. These days there are several Turkish kebab places in the area, but none of them offer a wide selection of fresh, house-made mezze like Alibaba does. At many places you're lucky if you find one or two options, often just a basic ezme. At Alibaba you'll find around ten different mezze and each one tastes distinct and freshly made. Every time I tell myself I'll just take a little... and somehow I end up filling a big mezze plate. Honestly, even when we grill at home, our motivation is picking up mezze from Alibaba to go with it. I'm not sure if it gets the credit it deserves, but don't skip the mezze here -- you'd be missing out. In fact, start with the mezze and figure out the rest later :))

And now that I have, it's actually a bit of a problem -- because whenever I travel and order falafel somewhere else, it almost always ends in disappointment. Mamoun's completely changed my opinion. The color, the texture, the seasoning, and that perfectly crispy bite in every mouthful -- whatever their secret is, this is the falafel that made me love falafel. The owner is also one of the kindest and most welcoming people you'll meet. Always polite, well-dressed, and genuinely warm. If you see him there, say hello -- he's a pleasure to chat with. Beyond the falafel, I've tried most of the platters on the menu. The kebabs are very flavorful and juicy. The baba ghanoush, hummus, and falafel are consistently fresh and delicious. The bourani might actually be my favorite way to eat spinach, and the mjadra is a fantastic, flavorful alternative to the usual white rice. I've been coming here for years and the quality has never changed -- which is rare and worth appreciating. I sincerely hope it stays exactly the same for many years to come. I had some time to spare recently after dropping my dog off at a veterinary clinic in Troy. I ordered the Turkish Breakfast Plate which turned out to be the most expensive breakfast on the menu. I also ordered a Turkish coffee which is a little stronger than what I'm use to. It hit the spot. Service is fast and friendly. The restaurant small but clean and cute. It looks as though the owners might have added a table. There are three or four tables in all. There's a new partition in the kitchen providing a little more distance between customers and those working on food prep. Gone are the beautiful ornate gold detailed Turkish dinner plates and teacups. I found them charming though not practical. I sort of miss them but they looked like heirloom items which wouldn't be appropriate for day-to-day use. They've been replaced by simple white dish-ware. Much more cost effective. FYI. There are no restrooms for customer use. That issue never came up for me but an older couple came in looking for a restroom and the owner advised them to go to the fast food restaurant down the street.
