We, sadly, only stayed one night - but what a great experience it was. First, the Rutledge is an impressive house from the street. The home of one of South Carolina's early governors, this place hosted presidents (George Washington) and other historical figures throughout its history. The home is updated but retains that old, original feel. We were greeted by a very friendly concierge in the lobby of the home and educated on the amenities, services and events of the Inn. Our room was in the Carriage House. It was large, up dated, large shower and VERY comfortable and firm bed. We brought our dog - who was welcomed by Inn for a small fee. Parking is also available at a convenient lot in the rear of the property. Safe and secure parking lot. The Inn offers afternoon tea at 4 pm and complimentary sherry, port and brandy from 6:30 to 11:00. We enjoyed afternoon tea after some exploring around town. Iced tea and lemonade as well as delicious treats including macaroons were served in the ballroom on second floor. We sat outside on the iron porch overlooking Broad Street. Views from the porch are wonderful. The following morning, we ordered our complimentary breakfast to be served to us on that same porch. We had Eggs Benedict, bacon, fruit, and a delicious biscuit with fruit. Spectacular. One of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time. Pots of coffee were also served with the meal. Special shout out to Jim O'Neil the concierge. He did everything to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Appreciate it! Don't miss this spectacular location!

Nice bathroom and suit and bed but no windows opening was hard for us. (Old bldg). And the lighting for us was not warm and pleasant the way we like. It was the colder lights so it did not feel quite as warm and relaxing as it could in the living area. Just our little thing. Helpful reception and great building and location.

The shower floor was slimy, like it hadn't been scrubbed in ages. We also found several "clean" towels with hair on them that could not have been ours. I only mention it to alert others who may visit around a holiday that typically has a parade. I stayed in a second floor room. My stay was quiet and comfortable, and the service staff was impeccable and amicable. I enjoyed the wine and cheese and crackers Happy Hour each evening, although I wish it was held a little later (as 5 o'clock is a bit early). I had to cut my day tripping short each day to partake. Still, it was my choice and I particularly enjoyed chatting with Robert (the server) each day; he was a delightful and respectful young man and an excellent server who anticipated my wishes. Breakfast was delivered to my room promptly at the time requested after a phone call to let me know it was on its way. Each day I got a yogurt (Chobani) and fruit cup; it was freshly cut up and always delicious with berries, melons, pineapple and pears. The coffee was good. I think all the options were sufficient. I liked that no matter what time of the day or night I passed through the lobby, there was a cheerful face at the desk asking me about my stay and wishing me a good day or night. Charleston is an easily walkable city so I parked my car in the city lot behind the inn and never moved it until I left. I had no issues using the gate control machines. The only thing I didn't really like about my room was that the three beautifully crystal clear windows in my room could not be opened to allow fresh air to circulate. But there was an air purifier and good A/C to make it feel comfortable. FLI is a nice option if you want to stay in the middle of the action. You'll pay for the prime location but there are lots of good restaurants, shopping and site seeing opportunities. You'll get your steps in every day and not worry about driving or navigating one way streets (especially after enjoying a cocktail before dinner, wine with dinner and a digestif after dinner) or finding a parking spot at your destination.

You're only as strong as your weakest link…read more I've stayed in many hotels for both work and personal travel. The nice amenities, decent gym and friendly staff are what creates the environment for a pleasant experience. Two of these were met and the friendly staff, was mostly there. . .but one sour apple truly changed the course of our stay. Even my wife, who worked once upon a time in hospitality at Kiawah Resort, was started by the interactions from The Loutrel Hotel staff member. Long story short. The daily complimentary breakfast was served. I accidentally went to place the granola lid on the yogurt, my wife told me that was the wrong lid and I went to correct. From across the room the breakfast attendant yelled, "sir that doesn't go there." Startled, I immediately removed it and placed it accordingly. I laughed it off. Moments later I went to sit my breakfast down where my drink was located. Same attendant, "you're not even sitting at the right table with your wife." Again, my error, but don't call me out twice in one morning. It's a small lobby, so many staff members overheard the interaction. Nothing was done by other management. The next morning, I walked down to look at breakfast. I saw the same attendant and said, good morning. She looked at me but wasn't pleasant in her response. Unlike the rest of her colleagues at the restaurant who are polite and kind, the same customer service I expect and provide to my customers. Breakfast offered salmon with some type of eggs or shellfish. I can't eat shellfish, allergic. So, I went to grab a biscuit at a local coffee shop and a coffee. We came back to the hotel and sat our food down. The same rude attendant came over, nudged my wife in her back and said, "you can't have this here, cross contamination." So, I left. Allowed my wife to eat her yogurt in the area. Funny enough, my wife asked where the utensils were, because every table had them. Same attendant rudely, pointed to another table for her to get them. I should have just sat down and ate my food as I didn't see any signs for "no outside food." Either way, stay somewhere else. It's unfortunate that a hotel like this allows such rudeness from a staff member. I did report this to the manager, and online but was met with more passivity. Comped two nights of valet. Honestly, it wasn't enough. I would never stay here again and it ended the trip on such a sour note.

Manager was absolutely obnoxious, passive agressive and careless, had audacity to say: "don't worry , we won't charge you for cancelation" It was 6pm on Saturday, we had to scramble to find a room at a real pet friendly hotel. Took us 1.5hrs and hundreds of dollars because of last minute booking. Luckily there are much better options in Charleston.

I had no idea what to expect of the rooms. Honestly, we booked this place last minute so I briefly reviewed the pictures and reviews but was just ready to get away. BUT when we got to the room, after self parking at the public garage behind the hotel, we opened the door to the cutest little room. It was sized as if it was in New York City but had cute boho chic charm. It's perfectly located in the middle of everything and the walkability was what we enjoyed most. We walked to all of the best restaurants and shops once we parked, we only left the a garage once the entire time there. We loved the daily breakfast and were intentional about making it downstairs for it. The grits were absolutely delicious. Perfectly cooked and once topped with the shredded cheese and fresh cracked pepper, I couldn't get enough! The pastries and biscuits were also very good. The biscuits and pastries tasted like someone's grandma made them. I know this review is long, so I'll stop now even though I could say so much more. We'll definitely return because I failed to try their espresso martini and they boast to have the best. Note: There's a valet option but the self parking seemed easier. It can get a little loud at night with street noise, but from our room it wasn't too bad. The rooms seem to have been recently renovated, and our room was really nice. There was lots of space, a fully equipped kitchen (stove, but no oven), and a large bathroom. The hotel was very clean throughout. We would definitely stay here again. There is a valet for $40 a night, which is probably standard do this part of town.

Warm, friendly, attentive, and genuinely fun to talk with. She made an already great experience even more memorable. But I've paid far less for far better service and experience. That said, there are definitely positives. It's a fun, charming spot, and the breakfast and wine hour were excellent!! Easily the highlight of my stay. However, the room was just.. fine. The bed was comfortable and the shower was clean and nice, but the windows were dirty and the towels were very scratchy, which took away from the overall feel. The text service was not utilized, I wasn't informed about amenities like cookies at the front desk (actually was not even offered one when I went down to pick up my car) or other small touches that could have enhanced the stay. The one time I did use the text service to request a bathrobe (which I would expect to be available at this price point), I was simply told they don't have any, with no follow-up or alternative offered. With this expensive of a room I also expect a turn-down service of some kind. Especially since there's also no bar, or a restaurant, or gym, I would want other aspects to make up for that. Lastly, the staff were hit or miss in terms of hospitality. The valet and breakfast staff were all very very nice, but the front desk staff were often uninterested and unhelpful. For example, when I was checking out I asked for a late checkout and was interrupted before I could finish my sentence with "noon is the latest we can do". Which is what I was going to request anyway, lol. They also knocked on my door 15 minutes before my checkout time and told me I was taking too long to pack up. Overall, it felt very close to being an outstanding stay, but it missed the mark in several small ways that added up. I would consider returning during the off-season or at a lower price point to give it another chance!
