This place is a hidden gem! Truly a step back in time when you walk into the museum with really cool artifacts from Ella Fitzgerald and others. So many interesting things to see. After looking around a bit you make your way up two flights of stairs to an unbelievable jazz room with a stage. It was truly a shock to see how big and beautiful it was! The music was fantastic and there was some comedy in there too. I felt like I was in time capsule. It was a surprise date night and it was by far the best date I've ever been on! there is no food, but there are bags of chips and popcorn to purchase along with wine or beer. Amazing date night, HIGHLY recommend especially if you love a classy night out with some jazz music.

Instead, they give an "augmented reality" audio tour which is kind of hit or miss. The house was preserved for the historical significance of the Townsend family, one of which was a spy for George Washington. I didn't feel there was a ton of information on the family though. Pointing their phone at the different objects in a room turned on audio about them, but only a couple of rooms in the actual house were interactive. The rest didn't have signs, and one loan employee was around to answer questions at the end. The exhibit in the visitor center was nice though. I just don't think the AR experience was really up to replacing a person, both in amount of information and the uncanny valley, unnerving portraits. There is street parking and a nearby lot that are free on weekends. The gift shop is minimal. It was an okay spot to visit, but I would recommend coming on Sunday or whenever they offer actual tours to get a more thorough understanding of the house and the history of the people who lived here.

That means that when you walk through the buildings, you scan the cell phone device on important paintings and artifacts and they talk to you with further information about who or what they are. The small building that contains the entrance is packed with paintings, dioramas, documents and artifacts. Next you walk to the main house, built in the 1730's, and housing the Townsend family. At the time of the Revolutionary War, Samuel had to make room for a British colonel. In spite of the fact that he sympathised with the patriots, he maintained good relations with his "Guest." At the time of the war, the house had eight rooms. One of his sons was one of the leaders of the Culpepper Spy Ring, Placing the home on the National Registry of Historic Places. Each room was elegantly decorated, with the exception of the space for the enslaved housekeeper. In spite of the fact that we didn't get a formal tour, the staff member tagged along with us and kept up a spirited conversation - even giving us a bonus look at the Victorian wing which doubled the size of the structure. The house is said to be haunted, of course. Very highly recommended. The full set of photos can be found at https://www.flickr.com/photos/terryballard/albums/72177720323110655

I love nature and history. The T Bayles Minuse Mill Pond and Park (referred from this point on as…read moreThe Mill Pond) is where nature and history unite.    I have visited the Mill Pond and seen it from Christian Avenue several times over going all the way back to the Jimmy Carter Administration when I attended Minnesauke Elementary School. When I a little child, my mother brought me here to feed the ducks. Over 43 years from my first visits here in the 1970s, I returned here when visiting my Dad this summer.    This is a beautiful and charming postcard worthy spot where pristine Long Island lives. When I looked west, my eyes took in a forested hillside beside a pictorial pond. When I looked north I saw a small bridge carrying Harbor Drive over the stream feeding the pond from the Long Island Sound and the historic Stony Brook Grist Mill to the right. The wide shoreline that is interspersed with flowers and mature trees provides sufficient room for waterfowl and people. In this pictorial postcard scenery; the geese, birds, and squirrels were the stars.    There are signs along the pond that educate guests about the ducks and wildlife that live here. The sign said the ducks include mallard ducks, Peking ducks, gadwall, and wood ducks. On my last visit, I saw primarily geese.  The Mill Pond is the Gateway to the Avalon Park Trail, which travels through the forested hillside that I described. This is where my brother and I started off before hiking on the Avalon Park Trail. Following the hike, we'd sit by my dad who had been relaxing on a rock overlooking the pond.    The amount of historic sites surrounding the pond is commendable. We parked at the Stony Brook Village Center, which could be the oldest shopping center in America. On the way, we stopped at the Hercules Figurehead. After passing the Stony Brook Grist Mill, we made our way to the pond. If we kept walking past the pond we'd arrive at the Carriage House Museum. So, the Mill Pond can be an attraction in a day filled with historic attractions and taking in the Long Island Sound.    I am a fan of what I have always called the Stony Brook Mill Pond. In contrast to several of the Long Island forests, the Mill Pond shoreline  was not  a victim of the wrecking ball. On the contrary it only got better with land purchases that helped create the adjacent Avalon Park Trail. With that said, I would love to return to it again several times over.

The one thing that is really bad about this Gallery is they don't pay the Artists exhibit with them abroad, and they don't return their artwork either, even though they are contracted to do so. They steal their art if they send it to another country for an exhibition, for example, to China. They reach their contract with the Artist. They promised to buy the Artists painting one of paintings if it doesn't sell in an exhibition and then they don't follow through they claim they don't have the money. When asked to return give the paintings back they don't do it when insisting on returning it because it's not their property they dragged their feet and the Artist is lied to repeatedly and promised and then they can't the Artist can't even get in touch they're constantly not available. It's very dishonest operation or Artists to get involved with. It is better not to do business with them. My works was a masterpiece it was. I did not want to send it to China. They talked me into it as promised to be paid in full with a 50% commission taken and I would be paid promptly at the 30 days after the fair. The fair was not successful. The works did get into the Shanghai Museum, but we did not get paid phone call at the phone call email after email message after message promise after promise and still, they did not pay for it and they did not return the artwork. Some of it was promised to be returned and wasn't returned. It proved to be holy unethical holy dishonest it was it's grand theft apparently because there are anywhere from 17 to 20 people who have not received payment and not receive their paintings back and this has been six months already people keep asking keep sending letters even certified letters I sent a letter that was a demand for payment after talking an attorney and it wasn't honored. They have not honored anything I was promised my painting back. It should've been here on June 30. That was the deadline cause I was told I had to give them a deadline. I gave because the attorneys representative told me that they were lying to me and not to trust them and to give them the deadline. And that's what I did just like I did with my demand for payment that they ignored. They make themselves invisible so you can't reach them no matter how many times you call right to them text to them in particularly Yuka. You don't get a response once in a blue moon you might get a response and then she tells you something and she's going to do and then she doesn't do it. I would not advise any Artist to exhibit a this Gallery abroad. The only time to exhibit with them is in-house and there's no guarantee that if you work, Cell that you will get the money owed to you based on my experience with them abroad. When I discussed it with another Gallery today, he said it's a scam. They're a scammers. They stole your Art. They probably sold it and they kept the money. At first, I was told my painting was sold in an auction when I did not give authorization for them to sell it in an auction, I wanted it back if they didn't sell it or I wanted my payment in full as promised if it wasn't sold. They did what they wanted to do and there was no way to check on what they did. I'm not the only one there were approximately 20 of us in the show and not a single one of us got paid not a single one of us got our artwork back. It's been seven months already since it's been in China we kept getting promises we'd be paid month after month no matter how many times they were contacted when one person or another would eventually get some kind of word it would be that it was coming as a certain approximate time. Well that was, but it didn't come and when contacted again, they were invisible. This is one of the galleries that people say" oh I've heard of a Gallery that doesn't pay the Artists". Theyb sell they work and they don't pay them. Well that's this Gallery. That's my experience and the experience of all the others in the show I was in everybody wanting payment, and not getting it trying to reach them and not getting a hold of them if they get a hold of them getting told another lie one lie after another promises promises promises. Sure it was a beautiful show here in St. James, New York, but after that is a mystery. I'm we were in the Shanghai Museum.
