The Ice Creamsmith is one of the local ice cream shops around. It is located on Dot Ave, in the Lower Mills area. I usually visit at least once every summer, after going to the gym or eating at one of the restaurants nearby. Strawberry ice cream is typically my go-to whenever I get ice cream & theirs does not disappoint. They serve pretty simple ice cream here, but tasty! I always get rainbow sprinkles with it (yes, I still get rainbow sprinkles lol) !! Staff is always kind and relatively quick service. They get you in and out. In the summer time, you can see people getting an ice cream and chat outside. Very chill. There's free street parking right outside, on both sides of the street. Wifey has been wanting to take me to this old school ice cream shop because they are supposed to have bomb strawberry ice cream. It was good, but I think I prefer haagen daz because it doesn't have chunks of strawberries. It was solid but wifey overhyped it. My bro in law got the birthday cake ice cream. We had a nostalgic time at the Ice Creamsmith, perusing the newspaper clipping and pictures, while reminiscing about our many visits over the years with family and friends. Service was friendly and efficient. The homemade ice cream is still all made in-house. The delicious creamy Maple Walnut did not disappoint. I almost took away a star because the Coffee Frozen Yogurt had too many ice crystals but instead will recommend you stick with the ice cream rather than the froyo. I first came here years ago when I was in middle school but only recently rediscovered this spot. It's antiquated and the decor doesn't scream contemporary. I'm sure nothing has changed since my first visit. I went for the sweet cream and s'mores flavors. I like to test an ice cream place by their simple flavor and sweet cream is the simplest one of all. The sweet cream is rich and has a nice amount of sugar that doesn't make it cloy. The balance of cream and sugar were right. The s'mores flavor is good, in that it wasn't overwhelmingly s'mores components but the graham cracker and chocolate wasn't sparse. I don't do a lot of mix-ins, so not having every imaginable mix-in conceived doesn't kill me. The price is a little higher but tolerable. Service was friendly and patient. read more

They have 4 round tables set with 3 chairs apiece for dining in, and a nice bench right outside. Their ice cream is served in a cup or a cone in 3 sizes - junior (3 oz) $2.38, small (5 oz) $3.74 and large (8 oz) $5. Yep, this isn't one of those spots that give you these giant servings that you can share if you are so inclined - these are portioned more for the normal person's appetite. I was able to get my small cup in two flavors - peach and banana for me! Both were nice and smooth and fruit flavorful. Mmmmm. Add a cookie or brownie for 0.98 and I'm set! I have to start by saying that I visited this place a few times. I always hear stories about how good the ice cream is. I thought the ice cream and the frozen yogurt were just "okay." Also, when I look at the menu and toppings, there never seem to be enough options. I paid about $7.00 for a banana split once, and it was more than the cost of a cheap lunch, and it was not even that good. Further, I agree with another reviewer, that the staff are never as friendly as they should be. Each time I walk in, there is no one else in there, and I get the feeling that I am interrupting something. The place is also very, very small. Personally, I prefer soft serve ice cream anyway, but this place did not live up to the hype. They will only benefit by being one of the few ice cream places in the area. The people I hear raving about this place are Dorchester or former Dorchester area residents. I do not recommend anyone go out of their way to try this place, but if you are in the area, I recommend you try the place once to form your own opinion about it. Good homemade ice cream. Banana ice cream, one of my favorites, is a regular flavor. I ordered a small, thinking maybe I should get more since it was a hot day and I really wanted ice cream. But the small was pretty darn big. It wasn't cheap ($4.50 with a waffle cone), but I got about 3x as much ice cream as I would have for the same price at Emack and Bolio's so I didn't feel gouged. It was more than enough ice cream for one person. The banana ice cream tasted like it was made with banana, not banana flavor or syrup (something I cannot tolerate). I'll admit is was not as fresh-banana-tasting as it's ridiculously priced competition, but it was still pretty good ice cream. Make sure you bring cash; it's cash-only. read more
