Fried pork chop, red rice and lima beans, yams, mac&cheese and cornbread
Samuel B.

Hole in the wall (formerly chill n grill) between a nail salon and a Chinese food joint. Great prices around $10 for 3 sides and a meat (meatloaf, fried chicken, pork chop, bbq leg quarter). Fast, cheap and delicious..they used to run The Fish Hut on Spruill Ave and have no online presence, would definitely recommend for lunch if you want some great home cooked soul food.

Really good bacon eggs & grits!

As other reviews have noted, this is a little hole in the wall. Really good breakfast. Can't wait to try the shrimp and grits! The owner (Terry) and the help were super friendly even early in the morning.

Meat and three sides for ten dollars

This was a whole experience. We were in Charleston Saturday night through Wednesday afternoon and…read moreBertha's is only open Wednesday through Saturday til 5pm. So we took an Uber there on our way to the airport, luggage and backpacks and all. The line was to the door. Most people get their food to go but there are a handful of tables in the dining room. We parked ourselves and our bags at one by the front wall and settled in for our fried porkchops and fried chicken, lima beans, cabbage, red rice, mac and cheese, and corn bread. And while we waited for our food, one of the kitchen staff walked around passing out free frozen punch. It was good! This was the perfect choice for our last meal in Charleston. We were in and out in 45 minutes, full and satisfied. The only thing is we are still confused about pricing. We think there was an error because somehow we paid $29 for one meal and $19 for the other. Can't be right...but we didn't have time to sort all that out. Pay it forward.

You order, they plate it, you pay and either take it to go or to sit in the small dining area. Service is very quick and efficient, and you can tell there are a lot of regulars who come here because the staff joked and laughed with them as they waited in line. Speaking of the line, it moved fast but while we were there a woman came around with a tray and offered little cups of brightly colored something. I chose red and was delighted to see it was a frozen punch, red is cherry. My friend got orange and he said it was like a mango or peach flavor. I ordered the fried chicken, with cabbage and red rice. The cabbage was absolute fire, it was so tender and delicious. The red rice was good, but a bit on the dry side. I feel like had I been there when a fresh pan was brought out it would have been a lot better. The fried chicken was perfectly cooked and had a flaky crust but it needed salt and the tables did not provide any. I would come back, there are so many other things I would love to try and this place is busy for a reason.

There weren't even any pieces of chopped onion! The fries that were included with the basket were okay. I've passed by this place numerous times and decided to stop by today and regret that decision because now I'm starving. They boast other items on their menu but due to the serious lack of flavor and seasoning I'm not even going to attempt to try anything else!

The batter on the fish was light but still a little crunchy and the shrimp were seasoned to perfection!!! I can't say enough about the fried shrimp. They were plump, crunchy and so delicious. I was happily surprised the cocktail sauce had a bit of horse radish mixed in it for an extra kick!! Plain cocktail sauce is also available. The hush puppies were firm on the outside and sweet and tender on the inside. All the food was hot, including the fries. The fries are not seasoned so request seasoning salt if thats your preference. I paid less then $13 for the meal and a bottle of water. The price was very reasonable for the quality and the amount of food I received. I would definitely recommend Sunny Soul Eatery and I will trying breakfast next!!

Because that's exactly where we were headed! And guess what? He said well I'll drop you off. Then we walk in the door and were immediately greeted by this sugar-sweet silky voice (ma'am, we are wondering do you sang, Miss K???). That friendly melodic voice coupled with the savory aroma of some unmistakenly good lowcountry cooking was all the welcome we needed. We knew we couldn't go wrong. We got the crab rice and they had yellow rice today so we subbed that, with a side of collards. We also ordered the smothered porkchop with cabbage corn and lima beans, plus cornbread. We smashed. Nuff said. Really though...best food and friendliest service we've had in the 3 days we've been here in Charleston. I felt like I was with family.

Traveling for work and was looking for good New Orleans cooking, I found it here…read more I stopped for lunch, got hear right as the doors opened and the place was full by the time we got our drinks, good sign. Service was friendly and attentive, good atmosphere. The food only topped off the good first impression. For appetizers we got gator bites ( seasoning was so good they didn't even need sauce) second was the Andui and shrimp Mac & Cheese (amazing) I could have just eaten these and been satisfied. The shrimp and crayfish porboy was large and tasted so good, man the seasoning on the fries was so good. The batter on the fish was amazing as well. We left with food to spare and already planning on what we will get next time we're in town. And only 15min from the airport. Great job Lola!!

The crawfish was cooked well and had great flavor. The only thing we noticed was they were a bit juicy--we think they may not have soaked in the boil as long, which usually helps absorb more flavor. My husband really enjoyed them (this trip was mostly for him!), but they were a little spicy for me. I ended up getting a Caesar salad with fried crawfish tails instead, and it was huge--I only made it through about half. We also got margaritas during happy hour--both were really good. I had the lychee margarita, and my husband got the mango with a Cajun rim. Service was very good--our waiter was attentive and friendly. The only small downside was that we did feel a little rushed. It does say on the menu that they ask guests not to stay longer than 1.5 hours, so just something to keep in mind. They are pet-friendly, and we sat outside. There was plenty of outdoor seating, and the tables had umbrellas, which was nice. The only other thing we weren't thrilled about was the credit card surcharge--it was around 3-3.5%, which feels a bit high, especially since most people don't carry cash anymore. Overall, a great spot--especially if you're a crawfish fan!
