Having been to the opening night tonight after a…read morebig refurbishment, I'd say the Halfway House now hovers in a halfway house between three and four stars, only *just* eeking into four star territory, at a push. The decor is beautiful now*. It's a kind of posh country gastropub look. As my boyfriend said, it's how his mum would decorate a cottage. Also some ubiquitous vintage teacups on tables with tealights or little plants in. I'm normally a bit cynical about such a look, but it was all so high-spec, shiny and new that it did look lovely and I enjoyed it in the candlelight. The service was strange - ignored for ages at the bar but then bothered by several different waitresses while we ate - all trying too hard to check we were ok, take my drink when I hadn't finished, and ask if we'd ordered. But I put that down to first night teething troubles. The menu is surprisingly dull and limited given the more gastropubby look that they have gone for. About 10 boring tasting plates (mini burgers, salt beef and pickles on bread, sausages in honey etc) and 8 or so predictable mains (fish and chips, steak etc). We had 4 nicely presented tasting plates and they were fine, but only fine. I prefer the Wandle, just 2 mins up the road, but because of its proximity to the station (just across the road - less than a minute's walk) and my home, I'm sure I'll be in again. If someone wanted to take a date or parents for a drink somewhere smart-ish in Earlsfield, this could be a good bet. I'll be interested to see how it wears over time... * They have books lined up on the windowsills as decorations, which I hate. The waiter took our drink order and food order and then we waited a very long time (30 minutes plus) with no drinks. I had asked the waiter a question about lemonade. My kid has been ordering lemonade all over London and getting Sprite 50% of the time (we are not from England do not sure if this is a thing here). She doesn't drink soda as she doesn't like it, so I wanted to clarify if a lemonade here meant lemonade or Sprite. The waiter sort of snapped at me saying something about the difference between lemon and limeaide and I should order what I want (I thought I was by asking a clarifying question). His response to me was weird...it was like he was offended I asked but I honestly wanted to save myself from drinking a soda I didn't want and I didn't feel like I was being snarky in asking it). After ordering, we saw the waiter bundled up and talking to the people at the bar and we assumed he left his shift. It was hard to get anyone's attention after he left to inquire about drinks because of the hustle and bussle of the very busy restaurant. We waited instead of walking out because surely, a new waiter would be assigned to us and we were very hungry at that point but no one appeared. Finally, a gentlemen took notice of us and came over and inquired about our situation. We told him we had placed order but hadn't received anything even the drinks. He apologized several times and it was truly sincere (we appreciated that) and got everything going. We got the drinks and meals fairly quickly after he stepped in). The food (Sunday beef roast) was delicious. We would have ordered dessert but it just felt weird being there. The man helping us was very nice, made things right but as we left I couldn't help but wonder if the waiter purposely left us in a lurch (due to the lemonade/Sprite thing) or if he was due to get off his shift and didn't put our order in with the kitchen or the bar and didn't get someone to cover his table? Either way, what was supposed to be a fun Sunday Roast experience left us feeling like we were imposing.

That was an abundant portion for a shared starter and precisely cooked, and served nice and warm. Main was PAN-FRIED SEA BREAM, slow roasted tomatoes, Kalamata olives, white wine velouté, green beans, samphire. The fish was filleted and perfectly moist and fresh, green beans were fresh and cooked to the just tender stage, and the white wine velouté was the right acid balance to the olives and samphire. They were out of sautéed greens, which we would have liked to try, but the broccoli with garlic and chili peppers was again properly cooked to the just tender stage. We shared a cheese plate instead of dessert and again a nice size portion of excellent cheese. I was pleasantly surprised that the smoked cheddar was as good as it was, as the goat cheese and cashel bleu were the draw for us. The rioja wine was also enjoyable. As to the service, it couldn't be beat. The servers went out of their way to make us comfortable. We were two friends who wanted to catch up over dinner for a long conversation. We were upstairs for dinner. We had a bit of musical chairs deciding where to sit as we didn't want to be seated under loudspeakers for music. Calum, one of our servers, immediately understood and without our asking, told us that the speakers were on separate zones and he adjusted the volume downward in the area we preferred to sit and it enabled us to have a relaxed evening without having to shout or strain to hear. Ann, our other server, was also so very attentive. She checked back several times to see if we were satisfied or needed anything, but never interrupted us. Both Calum and Ann were genuinely nice and professional. Finally, the aesthetics of the restaurant were very tasteful. Nice seating options, beautiful decor and plenty of artwork to make it an elegant yet comfortable atmosphere. There was also live music downstairs, which didn't disturb us upstairs, but which I would love to come back for on another occasion. All in all, this is a top notch pub / restaurant. Highly recommend it. I will now become a regular!

When I ordered one of their cask ales, she let me know it might taste warmer and flatter than I'm used to as an American (I'm a beer enthusiast who has been to England before so I knew this, but could definitely be helpful information to other Americans). My son was psyched to see they had J2O, his new favorite British drink. We ordered lunch from the Thai restaurant next door (the two businesses are connected) and sat at the corner table by the fireplace. The food was excellent, the beer superb, the atmosphere cozy and quaint. Everything I could hope for as an American looking for a traditional English pub. The interior keeps this theme with fun trinkets and old railway signage throughout the place. There was a good selection of beer and cider and the prices were really reasonable. Mostly I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere - it wasn't too busy being a Monday night but I got the feeling that even prime time weekends will be pleasant in comparison to other bars/pubs. Staff were really friendly and the food looked fantastic when it was being served to other tables. I am planning a trip back here and definitely bringing some friends who will love it!

At quieter times you can just sit and chill with your friends and they will come to you with your drinks order. The toilets are immaculate and are if the standard of some place in the west end. There is plenty of outside heating and outside heaters. If the heaters are not warm enough you can use one of their lime green fleece blankets to snuggle under. All in all one of my absolute favourite pubs and definitely my favourite if Highgate. I will continue to return and recommend it to anyone passing or in the area!
