The service is great. We were sat immediately with a group of 9 on a Friday night. Our food and drink came pretty fast. They had coke 0 which is always a win for me! We laughed and talked loudly without any evil stares so it's definitely a place that's good for a group. The catfish was good. It's not standout or anything imo but I'm no connoisseur. I got the surf and turf so I had chicken tenders too which I liked. Fries are a bit bland but baby approved. My table liked the pig slaw better than the regular coke slaw. Hush puppies were a hit. Another visit to The Hook today in Jacksonville, AR. What another wonderful experience! I had a combination dinner of fresh catfish fillets and chicken tenders. The catfish literally melted in my mouth. Since I live in SC, It had been a few years since I last visited but I was pleased overall. Having grown up in the south and now living in the Pacific Northwest, I don't get fried catfish that often. So when I came to Arkansas for a class and to visit a friend, we went to The Hook for dinner. The food was amazing and the staff was friendly. If you're going for the ambiance this isn't a five-star upscale restaurant. It serves good southern food at a good price. Next time I'm back this way I'll definitely be stopping in again. We arrived 15 minutes before opening. Knew it was a bad sign when workers showed up about same time. We were first through the door and seated, but 5th table to take our order. Shrimp was fresh. Chicken strips were leftover from lunch because it was 4 piece, he received 3 and waitress said a batch was cooking and she'd bring him his 4th piece when they finished cooking. Fish was leftover. Tasted like a piece of cardboard smells and had an aftertaste. Was not hot. Luke warm at best. We got one drink refilled and that was it. The rest of us were just out of luck. My husband paid and we sat waiting for a to-go box. Waitress never returned and I told him it wasn't really good enough to take home. I wouldn't eat it, not even sure my dogs would. I have lives just a few miles from The Hook for years but just tried it for the first time. I wish I had not waited so long. The fried catfish is as good as you will find in Central Arkansas and the service was excellent as well. The hush puppies were very good as well. The side item I had were fries and they were ok. We have been patrons of The Hook for many years. It has noticeably changed since going under new management, but we still have enjoyed coming to eat good catfish. Last night was rainy and we decided to do our very first-time carry-out order. Simple order of 2 small catch, onions and relish, tarter sauce and cocktail sauce with 2 slices of coconut cream pie. Walked in, paid, left a $5 tip and a bag was handed to me. Get home and there is only one slice of pie, no tomatoes, no cocktail sauce. One mistake can be overlooked, but three simple things wrong and I'm not a happy patron. I called to tell "the manager" what happened and after lots of fumbling around trying to find my ticket from just 30 minutes prior, I was told I could come get the tomatoes and cocktail sauce but said she did not believe me about the missing pie! No apology, no "let me make it right" offer and no "customer is always right" attitude. I am stunned and disappointed to say the least. Excellent service and food. Our catfish was lily white and cooked perfectly. We had baked potatoes and okra which also were delicious. I have been to this place twice. Both times it was just awful. French Fries were hard as a rock. Fish was small, fried hard. Hushpuppies had no taste. On the second time I ordered (believe in giving another chance), they lost my order. Had to wait for a while for my food. When I arrived back to work, the food was as I described above. We went in about 6 this evening they were not busy at all. We were seated and the waitress came and got our drink order and went ahead and took down our food order. When we received our food my fries were ice cold my mothers baked potato wasn't cooked, she ordered shrimp and we asked 4 times for cocktail sauce and I finally had to go and ask another waitress for the sauce. My mother was wanting a to go drink and since the waitress never came back to the table I again had to go to the counter and ask for one. We ordered a fish basket to go and the fish was not cooked all the way and the fries were again ice cold. I do not recommend going there.
