Talking to the staff, they told us that many of the products they carry might not be the cheapest, but they are quality made and they will last a long time....be grocery carts, cutting boards, knives, china, etc. Very nice friendly and helpful people in here.

Triple checked the date and time on my phone to make sure I wasn't imagining things. The selection is decent, although nothing that can't be found elsewhere, and frequently for less $$ online. Still, I'm fine paying extra and crossing town to shop a local small business vs the internet juggernaut that needn't even be named. Had a ten-dollar item in hand but had come to make specific purchases that would have amounted to hundreds. I've shopped there before, but I won't again, sadly.

I was staying a few yards away and I had to walk inside to check the place out...it's like walking back in time....back to the 1950s or so.... This old world gem of a hardware store!!! Inside I got to talk to Robert, the owner and he said they have pretty much everything you might need for the home...if not, they will get it for you. They are closed on Sundays, but usually open at 8:30am the rest of the week. Friendly and knowledgeable and very service oriented!!!

X-mas lights in June? Check. a set of allen keys for your bike? Check. A housewarming gift on the fly? Check. You can't actually browse or find anything yourself so you need to go to the counter and ask him and then he'll be like: "pas de problème" and he'll come back with your thing and then you'll be pleased that it'll be a heck of lot cheaper than what you'd pay at one of those large retail chains. So you win.

Although it has up-scaled a great deal, going from an average neighborhood hardware, to upscale specialty paint/hardware/housewares and gifts it still has the same neighborhood feel and even some of the same staff. Wilder, who works behind the paint counter in the basement, where most of the "serious" hardware is located, has been there ever since I can remember, and always provides one of the best customer service experiences available. He knows his stuff, and is always happy to help. Upstairs, where the gifts and housewares are found, is home to what I can only describe as *the* best selection of gifts for hard to shop for hipsters and grandparents ever... Anyway it seems Montreal doesn't have a lot of places that sells that but saw online that Hogg hardware does since it's part of the Home Hardware group. Went in, ordered it, got a call 2 days later to pick and it wasn't expensive at all. The guys are also really nice but while I was waiting around I saw a ton of cool stuff for the home including soy candles, funky door handles and coat hooks, and stuff you'll never see at Home Depot. I used to buy soy candles at Winners (since soy doesn't produce soot and burns cleanly), but increasingly they don't carry them anymore and instead have "hand-poured" candles ( what the hell is that supposed to mean if it doesn't change the fact that it produces soot?) but now at least I can get some here at a reasonable price. There's a reason why it's located in Westmount and also Nun's Island, it's definitely more bourgeoisie and less blue-collar.

A friend of mine who likes their kitchenware and is more of a collector of their flatware wanted to buy a set as it was not sold in the non company store. The sales person was helpful and even told us of the promo that they have if one buys a 6 or 12 place setting collection. The store itself is functional and has decent display area. Location is prime and will goes with the product/price range they have. If you are interested in design and would like to see a modern take on regular everyday items for that alone I would suggest you visit this store.

Rona is a bit of a victim of itself by being so huge and having such mediocre service. The prices…read morearen't cheap but the selection is there. Rona has all kinds of thing you'll probably need but the service is always lacking depending on who's working and who's available. I've come here over 20 times and how come no one has ever come up to me asking me if they can help? Am I that intimidating? I severely dislike purchasing things here sometimes as the lineup in the magazin for big orders tend to go on for 15+ minutes.... and this is TO PAY! You'd think they'd have all counters running all day long but whatever. They are also incredibly slow on returning the carts back into the store for us to carry huge items. We're forced to leave the store and grab one from the parking lot and being it back in. This is inane! But has to be done because no one else will do it. Deliveries are very bad as well. You order an item which can be in or out of stock, be promised a date and it is NEVER respected. Want something? Sure. The 26th? No problem. You'll call when you'll get it? OK. No calls. You call the 27th and they'll get back to you. No call back. Go into store angry and you'll finally get your delivery. Want a specific time? Nope. Wait 8 to 5 for your stuff even after you waited 2 weeks for the stuff. Ridiculous.

After typing in my postal code, I was given a list of stores near me. I called the first one..they did not have it in stock, and didn't know who did, but suggested that I go to a big box Rona. I went to the big box Rona on Cote Vertu, where they did not have it in stock. After a long wait at customer service, I was directed to the store at Carrefour Laval, where they were showing 3 in stock. I drove to the Rona at Carrefour Laval. They had only 2 corded Black and Decker mowers, one for $279 and another at $189. After another very long wait (why not hire extra staff on the weekends?), a floor person assured me that they did not have any Band D mowers for !59, and never did, and basically told me too bad that the other Rona told me that this store was showing 3 in stock. I had to insist some more, and after loud sighs and shrugging, the sales associate begrudgingly agreed to look in up on the computer. Sure enough, he found it... the $159 mower had a $189 price tag in this store (although they did sell it to me for $159). This type of customer service is why I usually shop in the U.S., either in person or online.

Things I fell in love with in here include the gorgeously painted sets of babushka dolls, the old timey lightbulbs that fit a regular lamp but have filament you can look at without burning your retinas, and this one industrial raw wood stool that I considered trying to waltz out with, despite its bulk, because I think it and I could dance together dreamily for a lifetime. The furniture is locally made and the friendly employee told me they are carrying more and more local design, but you can also find neat Japanese and French pieces and lots of ways to bun through your hard earned ducats.
